Arcadia Valley 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 6, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a 9 hole course. Each hole has 2 tees to enable the player to play the course as an 18 hole game. There are no hills, the entire course is flat. Each basket is located near the next tee. The City of Arcadia keeps this course and the entire park clean and well maintained. The city provides score cards with a map of the course on the back of the score card.

Cons:

There are evergreen trees throughout the entire course. The evergreen trees block vision of where a disc lands and cause additional time to be used to locate discs. With the exception of hole #9, which also serves as hole #18, there are evergreen trees for every hole that block vision and come into play. A disc retriever is useful for discs that get caught in or under the evergreen trees.

Other Thoughts:

1) The Arcadia Valley of Iron County is surrounded by the Saint Francois Mountains. The Saint Francois Mountain range is the most rugged and mountainous terrain in the State of Missouri. The scenery at this course is fantastic because of the mountains. Elephant Rocks State Park and Tom Sauk Mountain State Park are also located in Iron County and are within a 10 to 15 minute drive from this course.
2) A potential danger to players on this course may be the presence of venomous snakes during the warm months of the year. Copperheads and Timber Rattlesnakes are found throughout Iron County. Throughout the years, persons I know or who I have met with through my job who live in Iron County have observed both species of snakes on their properties. The course is located on the southern part of the park and Stout Creek runs along the southern border of the park and Stout Creek may draw snakes and other wildlife into the park.

Pros:

Another new course with no Pictures so I had to go check it out and add them!!!

I won't wait until the end of the review to say this... This is my favorite 9 basket course I've ever played. Course designers are getting better and better and so many of the new courses (installed 2019 or 2020) have really been excellent.

1. Use of the land. It's great that only 9 holes were put into this course. Some designers might have tried to convince the city to sandwich 18 holes here however I'm happy to see the sensible thing done.
2. 2 different pads. Many courses have 2 pads however they aren't always worth playing. When you have a 9 hole course you really need to focus on the long pads and design the course from the longs then add the shorts after. I feel most courses go opposite and the lines and landing zones don't match up. It was done correctly here. The course plays closest to par form the Blues and the Reds offer a more manageable round.
3. 2 sets of Concrete pads.. again, small thing but small things make big differences. Often blues tees are an afterthought and sometimes they aren't even poured. Here, both pads are poured and they are just fine.
4. The beauty of nature... Listen, many folks think the Midwest is boring with not much in the way of beautiful land. Missouri, once you leave the couple major cities and venture southeast or southwest is stunning. The Arcadia Valley is a common stop for Sunday drivers and Ironton is an old mining town reminiscent of what you would find in Colorado.

5. ok, back to the course. The soil is like a loose gravel/grass and the fairways are full of sapling trees, again very reminiscent courses in the central-ish Colorado.
6. Challenging. there are lines here. the course is deceptively challenging. if you play the rough as OB it can be very difficult. wind can swirl through the valley and change directions mid round. anything under par from the Blue tees would be a solid round. You really need a solid forehand or good control of the 300ft turnover shot for rhbh if you want to score well under par.
7. Can easily play as an 18. The course begs to be played twice while you are there; heck maybe a third time. One round form the reds followed by one round from the blues makes a solid 18.

8. Amenities - trash cans and benches are available and the town seems to be taking pride in this multi-use park. It is extremely well maintained

Cons:

Currently there are only a couple issue I see with this course.
1. Parking. there is no designated parking near hole one. There is a parking lot at the entrance to Complex however that is about 1000 ft from hole 1. You can drive past the parking area down a non-defined road to a non-defined parking area and park there. I did see a couple hikers parked there however I also saw a sign that was a little ways in the grass that said no parking so it's hard to say if you can officially park there.
2. Sapling trees and course maintenance. This could be a concern in the future. The sapling trees of all varieties are all over the course. Hard to know if they were transplanted or if the forest is trying to expand. In 2-3 years this course could be very different. It could become a heavily wooded monster. Right now its a beautiful lightly wooded course. I am excited to see if they let the trees grow or if are removed.
3. Repetitive shots. The sapling trees are very small and there are only a few in the way. I found huge turnovers could be used many times to throw out over the rough.

Other Thoughts:

The Pictures do all the talking. This place is full of great views. I really like courses that are not only fun to throw but also fun to walk an look around. There is a bird watching trail and another trail in the park to walk.

The fairways are very well defined and the rough isn't too bad.

I wish more designers made courses this way. Make a great 9 hole course vs an average 18 hole course. This place really shines and will be even more amazing next year when the trees have grown a smidge...after that...who knows. I suggest you go throw it now in it's new state as it may never be this way again.
