Nice warm-up or cool-down 9-holer

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I've played here twice, and neither time was it crowded. A handful of other players, and think I only had to let one person play through once. Well, it is hardly ever the case that you will be run over by others on a 9-hole course. Not a lot of folks care for them.

However, I find them useful to get in a little bit of play in a little bit of time. You can also play the holes with two sets of discs to play 18 holes (each hole twice: one set from the red tee and the second set from the white tee, if so inclined). Or you can also walk around twice to play 18 holes. The trek is not at all onerous; it is easy to walk around twice without any trepidation.

One of the nice things about 9-holers played this way is you get two shots at each hole and possibly fix what you did wrong with the first drive etc.

Though the tight gate an no. 1's tee is kind of gimmicky, I do appreciate being able to totally air out the next shot. I also like hole no. 4 with your disc flying down a wide, dirt lane with tight woods on both sides. Nos. 4 and 7 are over 400 feet from the white tee. You don't always get that sort of length on a 9-holer.

Certainly, Barnesfield is as good as many other 9-holers I have played and better than several.

Cons:

You don't have any directional signs nor hole signs. Use UDisc to find the toe boards. I found white and red toe boards on every hole except no. 1 (white only). Seems the red toe board is supposed to be near the practice basket. I just never found it.

The forest floor of hole nos. 3 and 5 could use some clearing out. Maybe no. 2 also in part. You're not going to lose a disc; it is just a bit junky on these fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Barnesfiled is certainly not a destination course, but it is a lovely warm-up (or cool-down) to Turkey Hill and/or Lexington Park (via the Harry Nice Bridge) on a multi-course day trip. To get a good look at the new Nice Bridge, stop at the Virginia-side visitor center. There's no safe place to pull over on the Maryland side, and the state police seem to be regularly present to prevent that.

If you want to start at no. 1, park near the picnic pavilions and playground. There is a kiosk bulletin board there with a course map. You can take a picture of said if you don't have UDisc. You can also park near the no. 5 basket near the basketball court and play 6-9 and then 1-5. No. 5 makes a pretty nice finishing hole.

New course with potential

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Barnesfield is clearly a work in progress, but this course is already fun to play and has the potential to improve quite a bit. Nice mix of woods, semi-open, and open holes, with many fairways requiring significant left or right turns to reach the basket. Most holes were well designed and challenging, and I appreciated the variety that the designers packed into a 9-hole course.

Two tees on each hole cater to a wide range of skills, with short (red) tees averaging around 240' and long (blue) tees averaging 315'. Hole lengths ranged from 175' to 454'. I played a mix of short and long tees.

Cheerful red, white, and blue Dynamic Discs baskets are easy to spot and caught well. One basket per hole, with one basket elevated on a concrete block.

Cons:

As of December 2022 most tees are natural and lumpy, so I frequently threw standstill off the tee. Upgraded tee pads would substantially improve this course.

There were no tee signs or or tee posts when I played, which made tees hard to spot. Long walks between many holes, which makes finding the next tee even more difficult. The course is new and paths between holes have not yet been worn in, so I recommend a GPS course map for first-timer players.

Color-coded wooden toe boards mark red and white tees. Some of the toe boards were missing as of December 2022.

The course is flat as a pancake. I noticed standing water/ice in a few places, so drainage could be an issue after heavy rain. I played after a cold snap, so perhaps the frozen ground was the culprit.

A couple of the field holes were wide open and lacked interest.

Other Thoughts:

Course design clearly prioritized hole quality over a compact layout. Consequently, I enjoyed playing each hole very much, but the price to be paid was long walks between many holes. Looking back on my round, I remember the good holes more than the long walks.

Tee signs with maps would greatly improve this course. Many holes have a significant bend left or right, and basket locations were often not visible from the tee. Quite a few times I threw down what looked like a fairway, only to find out that the basket was much further right or left than I had expected.

Despite the quality of most holes, new-course issues hold this course back for now. When tee signs and improved tee pads have been installed, I will happily bump up my rating.
