decent course still being worked on 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A few interesting shots

Cons:

Confusing layoutStill getting pads/signs on some

Other Thoughts:

I think with better signage the park would improve. Some areas are cluttered and confusing as to which basket to throw at. I could see this being a poor experience on busy days.

Probably my least favorite course in dfw 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

location, fairly close to most of dfw. new baskets recently

Cons:

I just hate the layout, the course has no natural barriers (for most of the course to block winds), which become worse as the wind picks up. The area is trashy with people and water is toxic. I just hate this course. I'll probably never play it again.

Other Thoughts:

So many better options in the area. They keep trying to make it better but its like polishing a turd. They added extra holes that dont have tee boxes and realliy arent that great. the course hosts try to keep it up but its just crap. Audobon, which is fairly close by, is a much better course over all.

B.B. Owen (23 holes)

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 24, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- 23 holes. The addition of five holes is complete, including concrete tee pads for the extra five holes.
-- Two baskets on almost about half of the holes. All holes have DiscCatcher baskets, but some are already damaged and in bad shape; some holes have a second basket (the original homemade baskets from years ago). The DiscCatchers are almost always in the longer position. In addition to added length, the newer pin positions put baskets in the woods and on hills/slopes closer to the water, adding some real challenge.
-- Two practice baskets (a DiscCatcher and a homemade basket).
-- Port-o-potty at parking lot.
-- A disc golf store in the middle of the course. New/added holes are now labeled A-C instead of 9-11. They are across the street from the 8 basket and bring you to Tree Love Disc Golf, so you can restock if you lost anything in the early part of the round.
-- Elevation is well used, as is the creek, especially with the added holes and new basket locations.
-- Three water carries and another four holes where water comes into play (depending on which basket you play).
-- Lost-and-found lock box at No. 1 tee.
-- Concrete tee pads (or at least paver stones) on all holes. Some are badly cracked and damaged, however.
-- This is one of the better wet-weather courses in DFW.
-- Map at holes 1/8.

Cons:

-- Some fairways are too close together; you frequently end up with a disc from another hole in your fairway. 1-2, 5-7 and 15-16 are the worst offenders. The numbers are from the old layout and count all of the added holes as numbers, not letters.
-- Hole 22 requires a RHFH/LHBH shot that brings a basketball court into play.
-- The placement of another new hole is weird. From 17 you walk right past the tee for 21. When you finish 20, you walk through the tee pad for 22 and turn left and walk up the fairway for 21. This is a big safety issue. Also, when you finish the final holes, you walk out of woods into the middle of the No. 8 fairway. I have seen plenty of throws go into those woods, so this is another safety issue.
-- Map and tee signs are not always accurate. There are two baskets on some holes that are not listed on the map/tee signs. No. 22 is a good example, a blind RHBH hyzer; the tee signs says 197 feet, which is the the shorter, old basket (it's still there). The new basket is about 240 feet. No. 8 only shows one basket (325 feet), but there are two baskets and neither is 325 feet. No. 11 is listed as 500 feet, but there apparently was a design change after signs/map were printed because the hole is closer to 360-380. In addition, the ratios and relationships of holes are not always accurate on the map.
-- There are two long walks between holes: 7-8 and 18-19.

Other Thoughts:

-- Previous reviews mention a sketchy neighborhood. I used to think that was outdated, but I saw needles on the sidewalk at 3 p.m. on a weekday, and a local told me homeless people live in the woods. I saw an encampment that supports that.
-- Parking lot at hole 1/8 is small and frequently fills up, but there is bigger parking lot by 12/13.
-- Navigation is not the most intuitive, but there are no big issues if you look at the map.
-- Before holes 20 and 23 were added, this was probably somewhat cart friendly, although getting from 18 to 19 is an issue. With the addition of five holes, it became NOT cart friendly. Crossing the small creek on 23 was treacherous without a cart, and getting a cart across was nearly impossible. However, a super sturdy bridge has been added.

Solid Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Long fairways
- Practice basket
- Signage on every tee

Cons:

- Almost all holes have a dog leg to the right.
- Not a ton of variance in angles
- Not the nicest of scenery (though I saw multiple volunteers working to clean up garbage while I was on the course)

Other Thoughts:

A fun and challenging play. As an average player I found some of the distances to be a great challenge. Despite that it was mostly open fairways that were forgiving of my poor tee throws. Probably not worth playing this course unless you're already in the area.

Different Strokes! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-18 holes with a good variety of shots
-Elevation changes on some holes which I wasn't expecting in Texas
-Beginner friendly but with some distance
-Good practice area

Cons:

-Open holes susceptible to wind, welcome to Texas
-Can be busy as it is a mid-Dallas park
-Not much shade from the sun

Other Thoughts:

This was my first Texas course and I believe it to be typical. Mostly open shots with a smattering of trees. Very compact ground can affect your upshots. I look at this course as a different style of golf that I was not accustomed to and it was challenging and fun making adjustments. Allowing for wider skips, fighting rollaways, wind adjustments, all good to improve my overall game. Nice change of pace.

If you live in Dallas County, this course is pretty fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice variety of holes
- The back nine has some good elevation changes

Cons:

- Baskets are old and need some restoration
- Course layout is not ideal, signage showing you to next hole doesn't exist;
- Neighbor is sketchy, personally saw some one doing intravenous drugs in their car in the parking lot on my final trip.
- The course layout changed at one point but some of the hole signage is still with the old layout, which is confusing.

Other Thoughts:

The first time I played this course, I spent a good amount of time just trying to figure out where I was going. The course overall is pretty fun, there are some cool shots on the back 9, especially the one where you throw off of a bridge. However, the first time I came to the course, there was someone getting arrested in the parking lot. The second time I came, I was accosted by a homeless person who was irate I had no cash on me to give him and the third and final time I came I saw someone shooting up in their car. I felt uneasy most of the time I was here, and will not be returning to this course. Which is a shame because that back 9 is really fun, even with the crappy baskets.

If the safety issues can be resolved and the baskets are replaced, this course could be a gym.

Ugly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

There was good variety in the shots that you need to play this course.

Cons:

The baskets were homemade! The signs, tee pad, paths between and some holes just were aweful. The front 9 were really crammed together and you easily could hit someone with an errant drive, or worst case land on the road where there is a lot of traffic.

Great Corse! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 12, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wow! What an awesome course! Well worth your time! Very good variety of shots. Left, right, short, and long!
Huge cement tee pads
Close enough to down-town Dallas

Cons:

Not really any...
Baskets are a bit older, but hey, they still catch discs!
The course is a bit confusing. Especially hole three. Three's tee is out closer to the road past twos basket. It's not the pad that's only a few steps away. That's tee six.
The course is always busy. Not a bad thing but with the closeness of some of the baskets to tees and overlapping fairways, just be safe.

Other Thoughts:

Take a picture of the map at the start. Or use UDisc!

Overall it's a lot of fun! I met some very nice folks! One even helped my find a disc I threw long into the brush.

As I was leaving, I found a disc in the middle of the driveway close to the area of the practice basket. Since there were a few guys practicing, I decided I would try to pass on the previous favor and see if it was theirs. (No phone number on it..) The one fellow took it, said he knew whose it was and would see to getting back to its owner. So I feel good! I mean who wouldn't!? Then no sooner had I got into my car and was leaving then that jerk took that disc and very deliberately threw a drive with it, straight into the brushy creek bed where only an act of God could find it. Things like that make me not want to try to return discs! Guys, let's be respectful and try to return discs when we find them!

Good for the Dallas Visitor 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of holes.

Well maintained grass and paths.

Excellent tee pads.

Not going to lose discs.

Cons:

Navigation can be a little tricky. We played #6 instead of #3, but went back and corrected our error. It was not obvious from the tee signs that #8 was back by #1.

Some of the tee signs are defaced or missing.

Some of the baskets are a little janky. I don't mind all that much, but they are not top of the line.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course. I play when travelling for business, and usually don't want an epic course that's going to take hours to play. At the same time, I want more than a 9-holer with 90 foot holes.

BB Owens is the perfect course for the Dallas visitor who's looking to get some play in and add to their course list. There are plenty of fun holes (#16 over the water, and a couple others o the back 9 in particular).

I played it with just a TL and a Pure, and did not feel like I missed out by not having a big bag. If you like to play new courses and don't want to commit to a lot of time on an epic course, you'll want to check this one out.

High variability with average difficulty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-GREAT tee boxes
-Good for beginner and intermediate players because it has a variety of shots with very low chance of losing a disc

Cons:

-Won't be very challenging for high level players
-Tee signs are either hard to read or gone

Other Thoughts:

Difficulty (2.5/5): The difficulty is my favorite part of this course, as a beginner. It only has a few wide open holes, and those are generally the longest holes. Besides that, there's always a handful of trees around to make you shape your shots and a couple of tunnels thrown in for good measure. But the difficulty isn't overwhelming for me as a beginner. If I miss my line by 10 feet, I'm not clanking off of a tree, I just have a harder upshot/putt.

Maintenance (2.5/5): The grass is kept short, no complaints there. They have the best tee boxes of any course I've played. Long, concrete, and tapered down to point towards the basket. The tee signs are in poor shape, though. I think 3 are completely missing, and the rest are extremely faded or covered in graffiti.

Variability (4/5): BB Owens has a great amount of variability. I usually use every single disc in my (admittedly small) bag. Off the tee, I'll throw hyzers, skips, anhyzers, bombs, layup placement shots, and straight shots playing the fade. And what's great is on a handful of holes, there are multiple ways to attack the basket so you can play it different everytime. The high variability with only average difficulty is what keeps me coming back to this course.

Flow/Experience (3/5): It's pretty easy to navigate this course by yourself, especially if you take a picture of the information board map near hole 1. The first time I played here I was playing by myself. I navigated perfectly except for I went from Hole 2 to Hole 6. I quickly realized my mistake and went back to Hole 3. The experience here is a bit below average for the most part. The scenery isn't that great and it's bordered on two sides by busy roads. There is a ton of trash in the woods and no holes that could be considered signature. That being said, I raised the experience rating by a whole point when I realized that there are two "secret" holes in the woods, 16A and 19. They are extremely narrow and short, but worth the play!

My One Year of Playing B. B. Owen Park Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Hole Variabilility: 3.0*. Great assortment of Shot Paths, and Difficulties. Course has Multiple Pin positions that seem to change at least once a month. Several holes have sharp turns left, while some have sharp turns right, which makes for good and fair variability.

Par Difficulty: 4* With some of the alternate Pin Positions, making par consistently can be a challenge for non-competitive players, good for private competition.

Environment: 4* Pathways in between holes are well kept, and lined with stone blocks that have been useful in muddy times. Over the year, credit to the course maintainers, I've noticed subtle updates to the course: new pin positions have been carved out in the woods, and touch-up landscaping, such as new stone blocks lining a few tee boxes. Seems like a good tournament course with a few great alternate grass tee locations.

Cons:

Environment: Ant hills are everywhere, this course in particular has more than others. Signage is inconsistent (some info is faded) and needs some touching up. Only one or two walks in between holes are scenic. To me a perfect disc golf course balances wilderness with park moreso than B. B. Owen does.

Hole Variability: Not the greatest assortment of short, mid, and long holes. I judge this based on the number of different dics i use, and i use one driver on 50 percent of the holes. Only 1 threatening water hole and it isn't very scenic.

Other Thoughts:

Two different parking lots allow you to decide if you want to start on hole 1/8, or start on hole 9.

Some players like this challenge and others do not, so i did not list it in the pros or cons, but: Several holes throw directly East or West, which can be blind shots directly into the sun depending on the time of day.

This is my first long review; I tend to prefer short and to the point reviews. Thus, I conclude by saying this course is easily not perfect, but it is still a solid goto course once a month for friendly competition, especially if you live within a 30 minute commute.

BB Owens 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three pros:

-Concrete tee pads throughout
-Decent use of minimal trees and elevation
-Many of the holes seem to favor forehand throws which is my preference

Cons:

My three cons:

-Even with a map I still got a little confused with so many baskets and tees close together
-Several somewhat lame holes including a super short #4
-Even on a wednesday morning there were a couple other groups out there so I could imagine how busy and crowded it could get at peak times

Other Thoughts:

After reading the reviews before playing I couldnt help but keep looking in the woods for someone sketchy to pop out, but i saw no homeless folks or other nefarious characters about. In fact some of the woods looked really cool to check out but i was a little weary about going off in the woods after what others had posted.
I might have liked the course more if not for the terrible round i was playing which included no birdies even though several holes are easy 2's... I might like it more if i had a better round, but there's nothing special that would really make me want to go out of my way to try it again.

Nice intermediate level course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Convenient location right off 635. Concrete teepads. Fairly hard to lose discs. Has some tight areas to throw through such as holes 1 and 17. Port-a-potties are typically well maintained. Because of the layout and type of grass, this course is ALWAYS playable, even after huge rains, ice storms, etc. This course holds up well to inclement weather. Because of the layout, you could play quickly if you are short on time. There are two or three alternate pins for almost every hole. Some elevation changes. A nice practice basket sits right by the parking lot and hole 8. There is a guy that sells new and used discs out of a truck on Tuesdays and on the weekend. There are tournaments on Tuesdays, and they do bring out some big name players. There are a couple of "secret" holes that are two of the best on the course.

Cons:

There are several wide open holes. While there are some light trees about, they really present no challenge on these holes. The wind can be a factor as some of these are w-i-d-e open shots. There are a few signs torn up or missing. The fairways are close on a few, so you will have to watch where you throw. The homeless. Ahhhh, the homeless. There are several that live in the woods in the park. They are mostly harmless, but they will ask for money and they will creep up on you...so be aware of your surroundings. The streets do come into play on a couple of holes. There is an enormous amount of trash around...always. This isn't the best of neighborhoods. I suggest going in the day and being aware of what's around you. Being in a group doesn't hurt either.

Other Thoughts:

If you live near the course, then it is an OK one to go to...especially since there aren't many others too close by. This was my home course for awhile, so I may see it in a better light than some. It's a decent course, but it can have a lot of traffic on it. It really missed the marked on using the great woods and creek that go through the middle of it however. The tee signs need to be repaired/replaced as well. It's worth going to, but there are certainly much better courses around.

Great practice course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Open straight forward shots, little to no hazards. Hole 1 is a very low ceiling shot and it is one of the trickiest of the whole course. You have to keep your disc low and still get it to go 300ft. There is little to no danger of losing a disc at this course, you may throw into the road on a few holes if you're not careful. Stay out of the trees and there's no problem of losing a disc. The elevation of the park is used very well, all holes are birdie-able, depending on the pin placements. Holes 1, 2, 8, 9, 11, 12, 17, and 18 have two alternate pin locations that they change out seasonally. Hole 15 has three different pin locations, check to see where it is before throwing.

This is a very simple park that will allow advanced players to show off accurate shots and get very low scores. Concrete tee pads on every one of the original 18 holes. THERE IS AN ALTERNATE HOLE 17. If you walk into the woods towards the creek, alternate 17 runs along the creek to the top of a small hill, its very short. There is also an EXTRA HOLE AFTER 18. Behind hole 18's long pin location, there is a trail into the woods that will lead you to hole 19. It is also very short. Any park regular will let you know where the extra holes are.

There is a great practice basket at the front parking lot! This is a clean park with regular maintenance, and the grass mowed twice a month I would say. There are porta potties at the front parking lot, and a water fountain at the back parking lot. I personally love this course for practicing! Easy holes gives you a great score usually. The wind does affect your play because of strong Dallas winds and the hills help direct the wind. Overall a fun course to play and a great course to learn the game because of very open shots.

Cons:

This course was made on a very small piece of land. Not very many long shots. There's maybe one +400ft shot. The course is very boring and squeezed so tight that a majority of the holes make you walk back and forth. Throw up a hill then throw back down the hill and repeat. Not very much creativity to the course. I would not recommend traveling a long distance just to play this course.

I will say that some holes are almost too easy. Number 4, 7, and 17 are must birdie holes. There is almost no danger of being out of bounds. This course does not challenge your game.

The pins at this course are very old. Mach 3's I believe, because most have the inner chains that run straight down. As you can see in the pictures section for this park, the baskets on the pins have small nubs or nipples that will throw your discs out, if the inner rim gets caught wrong. It is very annoying that they have nubs and allow cut throughs. I would rate this course at 4 stars if we could just get the baskets replaced.

Do not prepare to be amazed by this course, you will be disappointed! This is a very simple course.

Other Thoughts:

Very cool people around, as with any disc golf course.

People do have smoke spots at this course behind hole 5 and at hole 18 tee. Thought it was worth mentioning. If you want to challenge yourself or find this course too boring, go play Audobon! Many of the course regulars and mini tournaments moved to Audobon. There is a well run mini at BB Owens, Tuesdays at 5, run by a great group of guys, VERY FUN! Okay Course, Poor Flow 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 6, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good use of terrain here. Park is rather small but has a nice wooded river running through the middle. Decent mix of wide open and somewhat wooded holes. Course offers ample birdie ops while also testing the longer drivers with a good number of holes over 300ft. A few challenging shots with pins tucked into the woods on the right. The drop off towards the river offers some tough approach shots on the back 9. Garbage bins and small benches are well dispersed and offer shaded areas to hang out or rest between holes. Tee pads are flat, poured concrete. *course also offers alternate hole 17 for a total of 19 holes.

Cons:

The flow of this course is not the best i have encountered. On the front 9 especially, you pass up few tees that go to future holes. About half of the holes on this course are very open and lack imagination crossing back and forth in an open field. And the baskets! Oh those chains are unforgiving!!! I have never in all my years had so many putts bounce off the chains and out after seemingly hitting direct center.. Stiff chains to say the least. Seems to get pretty crowded due to its location, but the location is also a positive if you live in Dallas so no deduction there. While the hole that goes over the water is unique and fun (#16), it's tee located so close to a busy road with no barriers is dangerous. A local player told me of a car that lost control and nearly hit some disc golfers a few years back and ever since he has been nervous playing that hole. Be aware.

Other Thoughts:

Decent urban course but the lack of flow really takes away from what positive aspects the park brings. Seems to have a mix of experienced and beginner players so I would also add it's a good course for all levels. If you're looking for a challenge though, and want an enjoyable round in the woods, go elsewhere. A decent urban course is what this is.
