surprisingly fun 9 holer

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-interesting topography with minor elevation and mature trees
-discatchers in good condition
-concrete tees and quality, detailed tee signs
-course map at the start
-easy navigation, cross the street after hole 5
-other park amenities: pool, playground, even a tiny skate park

Cons:

-mostly short holes, no big drives
-some of the holes are very close to each other
-long walk from the last hole back to the parking lot

Other Thoughts:

Breckenridge DGC was a pleasant surprise. Like its closest neighbor, 30 miles away in Graham, it is a 9 hole course masquerading as an 18. There are 9 holes here with two distinctly numbered tees on each hole. I was surprised, for some reason, to find that the "front" tees were the longs and the "back" tees were shorter. I played both at once for one pass through the park. Worth noting: many of the tee signs are posted to trees next to the tee.

There are a number of minor elevation changes throughout the course. These and the many mature trees make for some fun holes and a nice character and aesthetic for the park. The fifth hole brings you closer to the other park features (a pool and playground) but they don't really come into play.

The last four holes are across a small street and this area feels a bit more rugged. Hole 6 is the most wooded on the course and has a tough line from either tee. Hole 7 is a very short, slightly uphill run that seems like it is playing into someone's back yard. Hole 8 is another shorty going down that hill to a basket guarded by a clump of trees. Finally, hole 9 is wide open and at 330', feels like the longest drive on the course (though it's actually hole 5). Then you have a bit of a walk back to the start of the course and the parking lot.

This course is a quick play and is pretty fun for the rec or intermediate player. Experienced players will probably be bored but course baggers will appreciate the solid equipment, easy navigation, and holes that are gettable but not gimmes. Worth stopping for sure if you are in town but not worth going out of your way to play here.

Good course but does have a few cons 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Lots of terrain change with uphill & downhill shots.
2. Course is not crowded.
3. Holes are well-marked.

Cons:

1. Holes #7 and #16, which share the same basket, rely mostly on luck with minimal help from skills. It is understandable why the designer would design a tougher hole than the others, but this is just too abruptly different from the rest of the course.
2. It was quite windy today. Since I have only played this course once, it might be a fluke, but my guess is wind is a somewhat frequent factor.
3. The course is fairly short overall, though I do not recall any holes that were just simply too short or easy aces.
4. The distance between hole #9 & #10 (which is the same as hole #1 with a different tee box) is pretty far, but I'm not sure what the designer could have done differently.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoyed this course overall, mostly due to the up & down nature of the terrain. Will play it again in the future. Interested to hear what others think about hole #7 (#16).
