Pros:
I'm not going to duplicate much of what other reviewers have said about the beauty of the course, the admirable mixture of ease, difficulty, and length on the 18 holes.
It's a wonderful course for a hot day, as almost the entire course is played under the shade of the redwoods.
All the baskets have an wooden arrow at their base, showing the direction to the next tee.
Cons:
Rubber tee pads are uneven, I stumbled during one initial drive, and they collect a LOT of debris from the trees with nothing there with which to sweep them off.
Due to the challenges of running an 18-hole DG course around a 9-hole BG course, twice, there are a lot of baskets visible at any time (four, I think, from Tee 1). Be sure of what you're throwing at!
The tees still have temporary signs on them with no indication of where the hole may lie. Sometimes it's easy, you can see it, sometimes it's hidden from sight and the first drive is a wing and a prayer.
The project to upgrade to concrete tee pads is apparently on hold. There are forms on several of the holes but none have been filled since the review last year.
Some of the wooden arrows at the base of the tees have imaginative directions indicated. Double-check with the course map.
Other Thoughts:
This review is especially intended for the three guys who showed me the way around Bijou Park DGC in south Lake Tahoe on Monday. Thank you. -- Michael.
Be sure to note that Brooktrails is a pay-to-play course. $10. As a traveler, I paid this. If I were a local, I would hope that they have season passes. But don't let the cost put you off, this course is worth playing, just make it a special event. The course is similar to Bijou but substitute fewer, bigger, redwoods for the pines at Tahoe. There is currently one par 4 hole.
To give you an idea of the difficulty: as a releativeIy new player, incapable of making long drives, I made par on three of the holes of the 15 I played at Bijou. Here, I made par on only one of the 18. There are a few uphill putts, a couple of "Side of the World" shots and several that reward accuracy. Play by the tournament rules with the map on this site and you'll have even more fun.
Due to the shade and Willits Creek, mosquitoes could be a problem. There were a few when I played but I'm usually not tasty to them so I had no problems w/o repellent.
Be sure to get one of the 8.5 x 11 course maps when you sign in because they are much more detailed than the one available here or on the rack card available in the office.
Tip: on hole 17, just go across the creek on your first drive, then look up the hill at about a 1:30 o'clock direction and you'll see the basket and an easy uphill second drive. From the map, I thought it was much further and had to drive backwards, uphill through the trees to get to it.
