An EXTREME Experience!

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

"The Sasquatch" is the second 18-hole course at Broughton Nature and Wildlife Education Area in remote Washington County.

I haven't played the original course, "Big Buckeye" yet at the time of this review, but from what I've heard, The Sasquatch compliments the other course very well.

+ First off, the elevation at this course is insane. You'll know that you are in the Appalachian region of Ohio as early as walking up to the first hole. The mountainous landscape is used perfectly, with every hole seeing changes in elevation. Many holes have multiple changes in elevation.

+ Each hole is equipped a large turf tee pad and bright white Dynamic Veteran baskets. Most areas near the basket have a sign pointing you towards the next hole, making navigation pretty easy to follow.

+ #17 and #18 might be the best closing duo of holes I've played so far!

After climbing steep uphill fairways for the previous few holes, you're treated with the only open area on the course. This is the tee area for #17, which overlooks the beautiful mountains of rural Marietta. The hole itself a 400 foot par 3 that swings left into a basket that is at the bottom of a drop-off. This is easily one of my favorite holes played to date!

Following that is #18, an "ace run" downhill shot under 200 feet.

I love that before these two extremely steep downhill holes, there was a big buildup to get to the top of the mountain. Great stuff by the designers!

+ Speaking of the design, it can be easy for heavily wooded courses to get stale due to lack of variety. You won't find that issue here, as the mix of distance and hole shaping keeps things fresh.

+ I was the only one crazy enough to be playing this thing in 90° heat, so it felt like having a nature preserve to myself. Even on a perfect day, I wouldn't expect a ton of traffic on this course.

+ This is a rugged course, but it is maintained much better than I expected. It takes a lot of work to keep heavily wooded mountain courses in good shape, so props to everyone who is chipping in their time.

+ I'm not sure if this is permanent or if it's marked for tournaments, but the circle around each basket is marked with pink flags. There are also pink flags that mark the entire fairway, which is very helpful in the deep woods.

+ There is plenty of parking available right next to the path that takes you to the first tee. Also near the parking lot is a practice basket, portable restrooms, a pavilion, and a water fountain.

Cons:

- I would like to see permanent tee signs in place. The current signs are laminated paper with very basic hand-drawn maps. A few more navigational signs would be nice as well.

- While the course is maintained very well, there are going to be some rough areas. That's just the nature of playing in the deep wilderness. Make sure you bring plenty of bug spray!

- Not really a con because I'm sure it's a very temporary issue, but the basket on hole #10 had broken loose from the hill and was down on the ground when I played.

Other Thoughts:

"The Sasquatch" is the perfect name for this course. It's big, it's intimidating, and it's hidden in the wilderness.
This course kicked my rear, but I really loved every moment of it. This is a must play if you're anywhere in the area! Just be prepared to hike.

Good hard 2nd Course for Broughton's 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Broughton's - Sasquatch is the hard compliment to the Big Buckeye Course on the same grounds ( taking the place of the previous old 9 hole course ) The all woods course is located on the hill next to the far end of the parking lot , up the gravel road . You will see an 8 1/2 by 11" laminated picture of a Sasquatch pinned to a tree to show you where to walk into the woods . Confusion might set in right away as you see a basket about 100' into the woods you entered . That is the #18 basket ( I thought it was a putting basket ) . If you travel a little farther in front of you , you will see the first tee . The tees are gravel and the baskets are very general , but catch well . I suspect some of them are from the old 9 hole course that was previously here . The is signage on most of the holes , but they are laminated small drawings with the hole number , distance and primitive flight path of your drive . The DG face page says that Dr. Jim Morgan was the course designer , and he did a very good job . I would prefer a few more trees cut out for the fairways and maybe some rock steps , but that may come in time since this course is only a year old . I am only reviewing as to what I see now . The 18 hole course plays kind of out and back , with a couple of downhills and a couple of uphills . but mostly rolling and on the side of a large hill . This course has West Virginia - like elevation . You are never on the level here . Print the map , although it didn't do me much good . There are pretty good pathways to the next holes , and red markings on logs and trees along with ribbons help mark the fairways and paths , too . Some steep climbs are needed , and some steps cut out of the dirt help a lot . This is NOT a cart friendly course . Once up on the hill , your amenities end . No benches , water ( pack water ) , trash cans ( carry in what you carry out ) , or bathrooms . . What you DO get is about 90-100 minutes ( solo ) of pure technical disc golf to play . You can rarely say anything bad about a park that offers 2 18 hole disc golf courses that start within about 200 yards of each other . This course will test your endurance and skills with every hole . Some of the longer holes are located near the end ( 666' #15, 620' #16 and 433' #17 . #18 is a nice tight finishing downhill throw at the basket you first saw when you came in . I was only tripped up once on the navigation ( #15 ) of this course . . My signature hole would be #1 . Great starter hole that starts straight , then fades right , dropping a little downhill while your drive dodges trees mostly to your right , 303' .

Cons:

I know that this course is brand new , but I have to address a couple of the issues , anyway . #1. Better tee signs , and maybe NEXT TEE signs to help out of towners and non locals out . #2 This course could be downright dangerous after a good rain since it plays on such extreme elevation . #3 Course still needs some brush , trees and logs removed , but I imagine that it will progress . #4 No amenities once you walk up the gravel driveway to the course . #5 Disc Risk : Even though there is not a lot of rough on the course , the fact that you are playing sideways a lot on the course means that you can throw a blind shot drive , have it pop up from a stick or rock , and roll downhill 150' . #6 . Even though the hole #18 basket puts you almost right at the entrance to and from the woods , it poses a danger if someone is walking onto the course and someone has teed off on the hill , since the tee pad is a blind spot and the first timer walking on is oblivious to where the downhill disc is coming from . Since the 18 hole is already completed , I have a solution . If the local disc club can find a cheap bell , maybe install it near the entrance to the course and have a direction next to it telling people walking onto the course to ring it to alert the disc players on 18's tee to hold up .

Other Thoughts:

I played the Mountwood Monster last night which is years older than Sasquatch , but I gave Sasquatch a higher score because it is so much further along . Where can you go wrong in a park that boasts 2 courses ?! Lots of hard work and thought went into this course and I suspect it will pay off in the near future . I expect a tournament here at some time , maybe a fundraiser ? I may come back to play this course in 2020-21 to see how much it has progressed , and update my review. The large park itself is well maintained and the staff is nothing but friendly . My recommendation : If anywhere in the Parkersburg area , spend a half day for these courses and PLAY IT !!
