Halfway is a Start, But Not Quite Far Enough

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

The makings of a very good heavily-wooded course with significant elevation changes, but the tees are substandard and signage pretty much nonexistent, making for a very frustrating experience.

+ The property is almost perfect for disc golf, with plenty of land, woods and elevation away from the main camp. There's even a small stream, though not really any water in play.

+ The 18 holes themselves are very good, requiring straight, left-to-right, and right-to-left flights. A few throws across valleys in the woods. The back nine gets very hilly, requiring controlled uphill and downhill throws

+ Basket to next tee navigation is good, despite the baskets not being numbered, and there's no marking on them indicating the general direction to the next hole. But when you look around, you pretty much always see a sign pointing the way

Cons:

- The tees are rubber, mounted on raised wooden frames. They're short, they're uneven and sagging, some are slippery, and a few hold puddled rain

- Signage consists of only the hole number on a wooden sign, along with a bible verse at each tee. No distances or diagrams. This is especially problematic because some holes have two baskets - short and long. You might look out and see a basket (they're all portable DGAs) and not know if you're looking at a short basket, a long basket - or the only basket for this hole. And the handful of blind teeshots make this even worse. You generally figure out what you're doing AFTER reaching your disc and looking around.

- Hole #16 is a short par 4, slightly uphill and to the right, with a Mando preventing a shortcut. But the basket placement is behind a shed. I don't know if the idea was to tempt players to throw over the shed, but it's unnecessary and makes the hole feel gimmicky

Other Thoughts:

~ Rocky terrain makes this entirely NOT cart-friendly. The back nine, with its steep hills has rougher fairways full of stumps and debris, feels like it might not really be finished yet

~ I admire that they have short baskets especially since this is a camp, but the uphill holes on the back nine (#11 and #13) are brutally steep, and very different from the relatively tamer front nine. I wonder how many campers make it through the entire layout

~ Trimming and clipping some trees would help a lot. For example, the second across-the-valley (hole #8) has the lines obscured by tree limbs, making the lane into a small window - and birdies very unlikely

~ $7 is very reasonable to play a round, but without proper tee surfaces, decent signage and some course maintenance, it's hard to feel good about paying to play here

~ In summary, there are some really nice holes here to take advantage of the wonderful piece of land. But the lack of signage, poor tees, and overgrown lines make Camp Hebron feel half-done. Or maybe a good idea that was only carried out half-heartedly: build some rubber tees, place some portable baskets, and call it a day. Frustrating to play, and frustrating to think about how good it could be
