Pros:
I may not be critical enough for this site, but I can't understand why this course doesn't have a higher rating. I had an absolutely great time, found myself consistently challenged and would play it again and again if I lived nearby.
Pros
- Great location, great scenery and a great walk in a beautiful woods.
- Constant elevation changes and length make for excellent exercise.
- Well laid-out, usually easy to navigate and clearly marked.
- I was there mid-day on a Saturday, and there was only one other group on the course.
- Multiple tees make for great variety. I was only able to play one round but I could see playing 36 holes with only a little over-lap in shot selection.
- Great variety of shots required, and it didn't seem to favor right or left.
- Constantly challenging, and many holes allow for multiple approaches.
- I know lots of folks like concrete tees, but the dirt pads were in keeping with the rustic nature of the surroundings. And, I found them to be well maintained and easy to use.
- Great facilities at the start of the round. And, there were plenty of course maps available, which was particularly helpful.
- Well maintained and clean.
- Quite private. I see very little possibility of stumbling across other park-goers. There are biking trails that surround the course, but they rarely come into play and are away from the fairways.
- Plenty of benches and picnic tables to sit and take a break.
- Seems like an excellent place to bring your dog. (I know mine would have loved it.)
- Serene.
Favorite Holes:
- I thought 1 & 2 were good starting holes. They were among the most open on the course, which allowed for a decent warm-up.
- 3 is a fantastic hole, down hill and over a deep ravine with multiple shot options.
- 6 is a terrific dog-leg left, with a blind basket down the hill, but with numerous options available on the drive.
- There are lots of complaints about 7 in these reviews, but I found it to be a fascinating hole. It's short, high-risk and tempts you to take aggressive lines. But, the punishment is severe. It makes you think, and I like that.
- 10 is a bomber's dream and very tough. Loved this hole. (Heads up: Pay attention to the site-map, because this hole is very long and it's hard to find the pin without a long hike.)
- I liked 11, even though it seems silly-short, but maybe that was the intention after monster 10. Still, always nice to have a real chance at an ace, and like 7, the perils are real.
- 15 is another great hole. (On this site it's marked a par 3, but on the course it's marked par 4. I absolutely think it's a par 4 hole.)
- 18 is a spectacular finish to the round. There's a Mando that's fun, and from there, a lot of ways to approach the pin. Wonderful!
(NOTE: When you are on the first tee, look for the 18th pin, which is behind you. Otherwise, you have a big trek to find the last pin, which is a pain at the end of the round. The pin is blind from the tee.)
Cons:
I only have a few:
- Navigation is not completely easy. So, you have to be patient and sometimes scout ahead. (But, for the most part it's well marked.)
- Trees, trees, trees. If you love wide-open courses, this may not be the one for you. This is truly a wooded course.
- It does seem to get a little 'short' after the turn (11, 12, & 13). But, I didn't mind that because if you play the long tees at 9, 10 and 15, you're gonna need a break. (And, it's great to have ace opportunities.)
- I'm nitpicking.
Least Favorite Hole
- Unlike everyone else here, I didn't like 8. I thought there was no shot off the tee, and given the water on the right, that means all risk and no reward. It seems to me if I'm going to risk a water hazard, I should get something in return for good execution, but I don't see how you get anywhere close to the pin from this tee. (Though, perhaps I should have tried a roller shot.)
Other Thoughts:
Part of what I love about this sport is the 'long walk in nature' that you often get with a great course. This is one such walk.
I will probably never be back, which sucks, because I love this course. But, if I do get back, I will play it again and again.
Don't pay attention to the ratings and the early, negative reviews. This is a terrific course and well worth your time. If you are in Hot Springs, you have to play Cedar Glades.
(P.S. The course is littered with beautiful white quartz and other fascinating rocks. And, I saw a gorgeous bright green snake - so keep your eyes open to the wonder that surrounds you here.)
