Hitchhike back to Hole #1

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Behind Chuckey-Doak High School, there's a new nine-hole course that is fairly open with lots of downhill throws and a unidirectional design that requires a considerable hike back at the end.

The course starts off with a tease, as the first two holes are in a lovely and shaded wooded patch. After that, the final seven holes are on a beautiful grassy area but without a tree in play.

A majority of the holes involve throwing downhill. The fairways for Holes #2 and #4 are uphill, but the rest of the holes are either flat like Hole #8 or include a modest to significant elevation decline.

The colorful signage is top notch, with a depiction of the hole, though every basket can be seen from the tee area. The signs also include a "Did You Know?" section. The tee areas are natural but indicated by a sign, and the spots are fairly flat and easy to throw from.

Navigation is straight forward and should be easy to decipher without a map.

On Holes #3 through #5, the grass off the middle of the fairway remained a little longer. The cool aesthetic reminded me of a ball golf fairway.

The baskets are Mach 5 and seemed to catch well.

Cons:

The most frustrating part of the Chuckey-Doak High School course occurs after the round, when you're about a quarter-mile from the parking lot near Hole #1. And the trek back is nearly all uphill.

The pars on the signs are goofy as Holes #5 and #9 are over 300 feet (but downhill) and listed as par 4s, while Hole #6 is a downhill ace run of about 175 feet but is listed as a par 2. Just play them all as par 3s and you'll be fine.

There's a parking lot down the hill and beyond the Hole #3 basket, and then Hole #5 runs parallel to a small side road, so the chance of hitting a car is greater than zero.

Even though the course is a decent distance from the school buildings, the course is closed during the day when school is in session. You should be fine to visit the course after 3 p.m. on school days and during the weekend, of course.

Other Thoughts:

Design-wise, this high school courses gets the basics right and is well-suited for novice disc golfers. An addition of turf or concrete teepads would be nice. However, overall, it's a simplistic design that doesn't merit return visits unless you live nearby.

If I played the Chuckey-Doak course frequently, I'd be tempted to park near the final hole and tackle the uphill journey first. Or stick out a thumb and skip the long walk.

Chuckey-Doak High School DGC

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great use of elevation
Outstanding signage
Great for beginners
Great for kids
Close to another 18 hole course
Great baskets
Great for a quick warm-up round

Cons:

Only 2 wooded holes and the rest of the course is open
No marked off tee areas
Way too open for a hot day
Par's seem off for anyone above novice
Poor use of the only wooded area available
Really long uphill walk back from Hole 9 to Hole 1

Other Thoughts:

Chuckey-Doak High School is home to a short 9 hole Disc Golf course. The course starts in the small, wooded park between Chuckey-Doak High School and Chuckey Doak Middle School. We parked in the back parking lot of Chuckey Doak Middle School and walked over to Hole 1 in that small little park area. When I first stepped foot in the park, I was instantly excited because it looked like there were going to be several nice little wooded holes. Do not let this first look at the course fool you like it did me. There are only 2 holes in the woods. The first is a downhill 150' hole and the second is 190' and uphill. I thought that was a funny choice to make having the shorter hole be downhill and the longer one being uphill but who am I to scoff at that. After you play these two wooded holes, there are no more trees in play for the rest of the course. This was pretty disappointing because the best time to play the course (when school is out for the summer) also happens to be the worst time to play the course because of the extreme heat of the summer and a lack of shade. This course has absolutely outstanding baskets and signage however it can be tricky to know exactly where to tee from as there is no exact spot marked and the course map says to tee from behind the tee signs. In most cases, I teed off from the left or right of the tee sign just to make the holes a few feet longer. The longest hole on the course is 325' which I actually don't have a problem with, because I am a fan of short ace run and beginner friendly courses. That is exactly what this course is. I do think that some of the par's were off with the only two holes over 300' being listed as Par 4's. This, I am sure, is a course par for beginners of the sport and the kids that get out of school and want to play a round of disc golf. In that sense, this is an outstanding course but it is definitely not a course that I would travel to often unless I was only about 10 or 15 minutes away from the course. I'm sure I will play it a couple more times in my life trying to best my personal score on the course but it definitely won't be often. Another complaint I have about the course would be the long walk from the beginning of the course to the end of the course. You could probably park at the parking lot in the middle of the course to shorten your walk after the round, but then you would have a long walk uphill before you even start the course. I personally would have loved to see a few more wooded holes. Just looking at the park area, I could see potential for 3 or 4 holes in the woods with the 4th or 5th hole teeing from inside the woods out into the open property which would give it a little bit more of that classic Disc Golf feel. Yes, I have talked fairly negatively about this course, but I would definitely like to give the course designer(s) props on how well they used the elevation on the land. There is only 1 hole on the entire course (Hole 8) that doesn't utilize any elevation. The rest of the holes play either uphill or downhill with varying styles of elevation and creatively used slopes. All in all, when I think of each hole separately, the holes are pretty fun to play but I personally think that the course as a whole could have a few tweaks added to make it a much more enjoyable experience overall. One last thing to note is that this course would be a blast to go out and play some design-your-own safari holes because there is plenty of land to work with as long as there are no other players, park visitors, or kids out on the property.
