Pros:
Cute little 18 hole pitch and putt located in small 10 acre city park. The park has shaded picnic facilities and exercise area, a children's playground, two tennis courts, two sand volleyball courts, and two basketball half courts. Other features include a perimeter walking trail, open turf areas, boulder outcroppings, and drought tolerant plants on the picturesque slopes. The park is very well maintained and looks brand new. Landscaping was very good throughout. The park is located in a new development area east of Bakersfield. The holes are very short with everything being aceable. A putter is probably all that will be required here, but it is a fun little play. Although all holes are quite short, small obstacles come into play to give the holes a unique feel to them. The tees are concrete with an arrow pointing to the basket with the hole number and distance on them. Baskets are Innova Discatchers and all have appropriate hole numbers on them. Hole #1 is located in the front of the park just to the left of the sign as you drive up from Canteria Dr.
Cons:
The park is quite small with a variety of activities going on throughout. Holes play very close to other activities in the park. The course is pretty wide open with the very young trees providing very little obstacle. There were no restrooms, a big flaw for an otherwise great little park. There are no tee signs, so locating specific holes can only be done by viewing the tees. Navigation did require a little walking around but the distances are so short it wasn't that much of an issue. I did post a map on here in files but you can figure it out with a little walking. There is no parking at hole 1, but because the course plays in a loop you can start on any hole and play around and back to where you started.
Other Thoughts:
Congrats to the city of Bakersfield for a well done pitch and putt. The designers of this course did a good job matching the course to the property they had to work with. I could easily see someone putting a 9 hole in this park that would have been dangerous to all involved, instead the designers put in 18 short holes that really don't interfere with the rest of the park. The distances are so short that control should be very manageable, even though many holes get close to other activities. We played several rounds in the park on apparently a busy afternoon. The picnic area was hosting a party, kids were in the playgrounds, and there were people on the tennis and basketball courts. Yet all the holes were just the right distance that we had no problem playing around these other activities. These pitch and putt courses are great introductory courses for beginners and families and great warmup and short game practice for more experienced players.
