Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

2 teepads on every hole.
Not too crowded usually
Weak-armed players can manage these short holes.
Well-defined fairways.
Several legitimate ace opportunities. The only place I've ever aced.
Opportunities to get great scores.
A good variety of fairway shapes.

Cons:

The discs will take a beating with all the trees.
Hole 5 will have you throwing very close to a busy road.
Holes crowded together a lot.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 uphill, slight dogleg right, several trees to dodge, mando left. Alt tee is longer and straighter.
hole 2: several legitimate gaps, but none of them very wide.
Hole 3: very short, mando left, with sharp dogleg right, several trees to dodge after the dogleg.
Hole 4: short uphill, with a straight shot if you can hit a 4-foot gap from 100 feet away.
Hole 5: a problem with the road to the right. Alt tee doesn't have you turning left as sharp. One of the toughest holes for me to play.
Hole 6: blind right turn downhill from original tee; straight downhill from alt tee. The fairway goes right past the tee for 7.
Hole 7: straight narrow downhill, it might skip all the way into the 8 basket if you throw past it.
8: very short, no straight shot. I try to skip it in (succeeded once)
Hole 9 is my favorite. slight downhill; wider fairway with a scattering of tree trunks to miss.
10 is the only non-wooded hole. original tee has you throwing into the field and fading left to the basket; alt tee is a long downhill with a left fade.
11 is another ace run, but if you miss you could end up in a shallow creek. Basketball court to the left.
12 has about a 15 foot gap to hit, then you're in the open and cross the small stream.
13 is uphill, with a clump of trees blocking a straight shot. Go left or right.
14 uphill, with a slight right at the end.
15 pretty straight, slight right at the end, and dense brush on the left.
16 has a straight 100-150, then slight left, another 150, then slight right. Narrow gap all the way.
17 short, with a pretty narrow lane.
18 go to the right of the big cedar tree (original tee) or throw the alt tee (just painted on the walkway) for longer open field shot.

I've thrown 4 aces in my life, all of them here. 4, 8, 9, 11.

Nice Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course really surprised me. Usually the words "Heavily Wooded" turn me away from a course because they translate to "you will spend the entire game screaming as your disc collides with trees over and over and over...". This course, despite being considered heavily wooded, was not bad all. The fairways were tight, but were always wide enough to get your disc near the basket, even if your accuracy isn't perfect. The course had tee signs that clearly showed the hole layout and length. Also, there are two tees for every hole, so there are basically two courses here (though some of the alt tees are extremely close the the normal tees and therefore do not change the layout that much...). You could easily birdie all holes except for alt 10 and alt 18. Very few holes are more than 200 ft so its a short course and you could play it in about 45 minutes.

Cons:

I played the day after it rained, and there was mud everywhere. The terrain was often slightly difficult to traverse because the mud was so deep.

Other Thoughts:

When I played, there were two groups of about 5 kids below the age of 8 out there playing. They were playing extremely slowly, and the adults accompanying them never asked us to play through. I don't know if this kid traffic is a very regular occurence, but it definitely detracted from my experience. I'm all for kids getting into disc golf at a young age, but a group of six should always let a pair play through.

B = Be a little too short 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2006 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- A-
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- B
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- B+
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- C+
5) Multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- NA

Other Thoughts:

I ranked this course subjectively based on my own personal enjoyment factor...more accurately my "personal addiction factor". Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they chose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I say adds anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

Great "Short Track" Course... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Cornwallis DGC is a great "short track" type of course, and is perfect for practicing your short game. The terrain is fairly fair-to-moderate, so you won't really need your hiking shoes on this course.

~ Concrete beginner and alternative tees.
~ Signage provides approx distances.
~ Perfect for a quick round on the weekdays.
~ Great for perfecting your game in heavily wooded conditions.

Cons:

My major issue with this course involves the fact that for new players, this course can be extremely confusing due to it's layout.

~ Extremely crowded on weekends.
~ Heavy pedestrian and pet traffic.
~ Difficult to locate next tees due to overlapping fairways.
~ Extremely wet and muddy after rain storms.
~ Heavily wooded areas.
~ One hole requires banking your shot far left, otherwise you risk landing your disc on a major road (major hazard).

Short but challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very tight course, requires very controlled shots. Shorter distance makes it more fun if you don't have a big arm. Alt tees are typically a different line, not just longer. Fairly easy to navigate. Lots of trash bins. Not too crowded, and the locals are cool. Close to Valley Springs and UNC courses.

Cons:

Lots of dog-walkers, which means you occasionally have to ask them to get out of your way to throw (especially from long tees), and watch out for poo. The course gets very muddy with rain and takes awhile to dry out (lots of cool mushrooms though). Between ricochets off of trees and the many rocky patches on the course it can be hard on softer discs. Older baskets (Mach2?) which are more shallow.

Other Thoughts:

Although the holes are very short, most fairways are very tight and many have trees in the middle that you must shoot around, which I like compared to some other woods courses. Considering this course was built in something like 1985 I think it still holds its own.

Short and Tight, but not to shabby 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I'll try to be as detailed as possible. This course is short on distance, however tough on windows. Ultimately this course makes up for its decided lack of distance with some very difficult angles. There are some great Hyzers and Annie opportunities on this course. ultimately the windows are TIGHT, if you miss your window you will most likely dink it off of a tree and either have a blocked lie, thick lie or a tough shot for your 2nd shot. This says something when each hole is a realistic birdie opportunity.

Ok, time for the list of things I like

1. Tight Windows - I actually like this because it forces the you to work on your approach shots. Not every shot needs to be 500-600ft long. I personally like this course for it's ability to help hone ones mid-range/approach game.

2 - Variety of Shots - This course does not force you to only throw one type of shot. Sure your either throwing a putt/approach or a mid-range for 90% of your shots, but you have to be able to control them on different angles (hyzer, anhyzer, Thumber, Scooby, etc).

Length - This course is not so long that it takes forever to play. I routinely play this on my 'extended' lunch break at work - Meaning it takes about an hour to play the course, less if you know it well, it's not so much walking that you are exhausted, and not so short that you are bored.

Cons:

Just in a list format
1. Some of the holes (specifically #3, 16, 17 and 10/18) are just laidout on top of one another. Often times when you are eying your shot, you are ultimately in the fairway, or the 'window' of another hole. The earliest example is hole #3, playing from the Blue tee's you are standing directly in the fairway of hole #2.

2. Dual purpose course - There have been quite a few 'walkers' and 'mountain bikers' out each time I've played this course

3. Course Flow - The Sign's are ultimately detailed when you arrive at the pin, however the signs are only on the RED tee's (SHORT) - so you have to do a little looking around for the longer tee pads (BLUE) - this is a pain when the leaves are down. Beyond that, between holes, the layout is a bit hard to grasp. Some holes flow pretty well, but others you have to take a moment or two and look for if you are not familiar with the course.

4. Parking - There is no parking lot, you have to park on the side of the street. I have never seen this course 'packed' so it does not appear to be to big of a problem.

Ultimately these Con's are not terrible, and I would not read them and think "I should not play this course". I enjoy playing this course.

Other Thoughts:

I have updated the hole footage information into the hole info. I have attached a JPG that I scanned of the scorecards, in case you wanted to print your own before getting to the course.

Ultimately this course is not a Championship caliber course (IMO) However, I think courses like this are GREAT for working on various parts of your game. I absolutely think this course is great for working on your putt/mid-range game.

Durham's equivolent of kentwood... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 2, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a little more challenging than Kentwood down in raleigh...much tighter on the fairways, any side to side and you're screwed. It was pretty easy to navigate, easier than finding it. It's got dual pads that are easy to find and well marked. Lots of trees and shade, very enjoyable in 87degree weather...It's a quiet little walk in the woods and it seemed not too heavily traveled...

Cons:

if it does get heavily traveled, i don't know if it does having only played it once, but if it does it could very easily be kinda dangerous...this doesn't really detract from the overall score, but it shoud be noted as many blue tees are closer to preceeding basket than red tees...but if you pay attention, no problem.

and there's no parking lot, at least not one i could find...i guess you just park on Wade Street???

Other Thoughts:

overall it was fun, great confidence booster, although any wild shots will kill the score...not much land to expand, but they made great use of the land they had...
