Splendid Spot for Sharpening Short Game

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 26, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course comprised of numerous imaginative routes around property.
+ good use of trees and elevation as obstacles
+ creative and varied hole designs to prompt plenty of shot-shaping decisions
+ stair walkways (with more to come) and leveled tee areas added on hillsides
+ mostly shaded

Cons:

Unmarked holes are typically short.
- map or guide needed to navigate layout
- mostly short holes which seldom require a driver
- mixed collection of baskets so targets are not uniform
- a few holes play close to road or house

Other Thoughts:

INFO
This private, backyard course with small, fenced off garden plots criss-crosses roughly three wooded acres surrounding a dry gully (aka a coulee), whence the course derives its name. Baskets and tees are utilized on multiple holes in various configurations to create its full layout.

EVAL
Course owner and co-designer Billy P. with the help of friends has cleared out a stimulating space to play disc golf around property dominated by a wooded ravine close behind a house. The course uses both natural tees and wooden decks to shoot at five baskets repeatedly combined in different ways to create a diversity of throws. I was surprised by how unique each hole played despite the constant recycling of tees and baskets. I've played many backyard courses before that simulated a full course using only a handful of targets; most of those left much to be desired, e.g., Lambos on the Hill (RIP), but Coulee Forest Garden DGC maintained my interest as I threw to the same baskets over and over via alternate routes featuring differing obstacles.

This is a short course overall. Midrange discs or even putters are suitable for driving off most tees with only a few long holes which might warrant a driver. Still, by no means should this course be considered a pitch 'n putt. The plethora of trees on sloped fairways gives one pause throughout play to carefully consider drives, approaches and putts. This is a splendid spot for sharpening short game skills, and I quite enjoyed exploring what this course had to offer. My host mentioned the potential for additional holes in clearings beyond the woods, but I didn't have the chance to experience that section during my visit.

NOTE
A few homemade, mini pole targets with chains (remnants from the original course design) still hang from trees throughout the course.

LAYOUT
First basket is tucked into small stand of trees near driveway.
Second basket sits low on hillside near trees and across coulee from house.
Third basket is elevated under a large, horizontal branch at base of coulee.
Fourth basket is surrounded by trees near side of house.
Fifth basket is part way down hill amid trees near side of property.
Tees are situated all around the property, creating numerous fairways to each of these five baskets.

For what it is, I have seen no better; but who am I? 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Multiple types of shots and varied hole design.

Cons:

Limited due to acreage, few baskets (more to come).

Other Thoughts:

As a back yard practice course I have seen no better. Offers tight lines, mixed shots, staircases, benches, landscaping and more to come; a beautiful setting, too.
