Pros:
This is a relatively small park with a few uses going on. Since there was snow on the ground when I played and it was pretty cold, I can't really speculate on how busy the park gets at other times of the year.
This course is very beginner friendly (with only a couple holes even approaching 300 feet) but technical (with interesting and fair woods shapes to hit on every hole). This, in my opinion, is exactly what a local beginner course should be. It will teach players how to manage spin, angles, and speed and not be intimidated by gaps. More advanced/experienced players will still be challenged to manipulate putters or midranges, with few/no gimmes.
It is clear that the designer put a lot of thought into how to maximize the available footprint and create a cohesive set of interesting holes. Although short and technical, none are unfair.
Cons:
In a couple places the course has some conflicts with other park uses--hole 2 is right beside the entrance road with instructions not to throw if cars are approaching, hole 12 crosses over a field with instructions to skip the hole if the field is in use. Visibility is fine and I understand the design choices.
Rubber tee pads are not my first choice, but these are adequate, particularly if local players can take good care of them long-term.
A couple tee sign distances seemed conceptually wrong, but I didn't verify much beyond that.
Don't be fooled by the first three holes, which have a pretty similar structure--there's only throw one R-L dumping shot after that.
Other Thoughts:
Don't go here expecting to be wowed, but try to appreciate it for what it is. I would be delighted to have Crandall Park near my house for a quick play that still requires some thought and technicality. I'm mostly reviewing this because no one has yet on DGCR, and I think it's worthwhile to say that the design and execution are very appropriate for the park setting and intended user group.
I don't think I have any truly negative thoughts, and I prefer my reviews to reflect the quality of the design in equal parts to how "good" the course/land/amenities are. As such, 4.0 for now after one play-through.
