Baskets around the perimeter of an open park. Meh.

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Simple 9 on mostly open grounds around a large church/community center. Some decent length holes and no obstacles, so air it out with little risk

+ Number 5 is a hard dogleg right (that is, there's a grove of tall trees to the right that the basket is behind). The distance and height of the trees makes an over-the-top shot pretty unlikely. There's a drainage ditch all the way up the right side of the fairway, so there's a reward for throwing a very straight shot to the corner, because RHBH hyzer just makes the hole longer (I realize I'm going on at length about a very simple hole - but it's the only tee shot I remember having to think about)

Cons:

- Other than mowing, the course does not appear to get much care. Hole #1, the route to the basket is now obscured by construction material (large concrete forms and sewer pipes) that have been dumped there sometime since the photos were taken in 2018

- The first four holes cross a walking trail, and hole #8 crosses over the main driveway

- Although the tees are poured concrete, the tee for #4 is on a slanted embankment, so your run-up is uphill. Simply placing the tee 15' - 20' back would have put it on level ground

Other Thoughts:

~ Nothing really wrong, but nothing really good either

~ Bagging stop with no reason to return, except maybe field work with baskets, or a quick 9 before or after church?

Pros:

Some variation in hole length. Berms provide a bit of challenge on a few holes. Baskets caught well (but see cons). Decent sized concrete pads (but see cons). Friendly folks walking through the park.

Basic tee signs on posts describe the flight path and distance, and make spotting the next tee easier. Ample parking lot right next to hole 1.

Cons:

The tee for hole 5 slopes steeply uphill, and the tee for hole 6 slopes noticeably side to side. In addition to the sloped tees, several baskets were noticeably off level.

Except for the berms, this course is flat and almost completely wide open. Hole 8 has a few moderate-sized saplings on the fairway, but you can take them out of play with a righty sidearm.

Safety hazards abound. Blind throw up the walking path on hole 1, with a cinder block building that hides pedestrians. I laid up my drive short and chipped up to the basket, which was good because a person I could not see was walking near the basket.

You can stand on the tee for hole 2 and touch the basket for hole 1 (again, the hole 1 basket is blind from the tee). Holes 1 and 2 share the same fairway, but play in opposite directions. Yeesh.

Almost all holes play across or near the walking path. Multiple people were out walking when I played on a pleasant Sunday in May. Fortunately (except for hole 1), pedestrians are visible from the tees.

Hole 8 plays across the entrance driveway, and exiting cars can sneak up from behind you as you tee off.

I did not find hole 9, so there is a fairly long walk back to parking lot after playing hole 8.

Ticks were prevalent in early May. I found one on the dog, and a disc golfer I met had picked up a tick.

Other Thoughts:

Disclaimer: open, flat, and windy courses are my absolute least favorite to play. This is an open, flat, and windy course and I did not enjoy playing here. Bag it if you must, but the best I can say is that it will not take too much of your time. Maybe if they plant a lot of trees this will be a lovely 9-hole course in a decade or two.

Course was dry when I played, but I would not be surprised if low-lying areas (much of the course) held water after a good rain.

It was windy when I played, so I had ample opportunity to work on my wind game. Spoiler alert: I still play lousy in the wind. Perhaps my bag of mostly understable 150-class discs has something to do with it? Nah, must be something else.

Pros:

The walk from basket #1 to tee #2 is a couple feet.

The concrete teepads are of decent size.

There are some distance challenges.

Cons:

A walking path is in the midst of holes 1-6, the last ~75' of fairway #1 completely blind.

I could say tee #6 was the most titlted I'd every played, except tee #5 was doubly bad.

Bog potential for portions of most fairways.

If hole #9 doesn't exist by now, I think this course should be listed as a 8=holer.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays in the open space of a community park.

Primarily wide open, the exceptions being:
1) After ~250', need a blind right turn down a tunnel ... which most unfortunately hosts a walking path
4+5) A berm forces slight up-n-over shots
8) A few tiny trees to throw over or go around near the basket.

Add it to your played list, then head for Codorus.

Pros:

DISCatcher baskets with numbers, two rows of chains and bright yellow bands; no risk of disc loss; low traffic, little overlap with other activity areas; cement tees; basket placement is good; grounds well maintained; plenty of parking.

Cons:

Tees are not numbered (you will need the map first time); chains are rusty; tee pad on #2 is poorly placed; tee pad on #5 is ridiculous (see below); it was marshy on the day I was there; mostly open; #9 didn't exist.

Other Thoughts:

The map on this site is very good and you will need it for your first trip here. I took pictures from each tee and uploaded them to clarify the review. Park behind the fellowship center; the first tee is at the back left corner of the parking lot.

#1 throws to a basket located down the gap between two "walls" of trees. There is a second smaller gap to its right which is a short dead end - throw to the gap with the gravel walking path. You cannot see the basket from the tee.

#2 tee pad is directly behind the #1 basket - see photo - it's within 3 feet. Fairway is the same one as #1 with the basket tucked around to the right.

#3 tee is back at the parking lot (near left corner from a Berlin Road perspective). Throws across an open field to a basket well short of the woods.

#4 plays across a berm. The tee is to the left of the berm and the basket is on the downslope of the other side. Only 300 feet but fun.

#5's tee pad is located on the downslope behind another berm. It is literally at a 30 degree angle uphill. The hole is short (233 feet) but the tee pad made it more challenging for me than #4.

#6 plays across another open field with a telephone pole as the only obstacle.

#7 is the longest hole to a basket tucked in the front corner of the property. Very flat.

#8 plays slightly up to a basket in a strip between the woods and some rough. But it's short (272 feet).

#9 didn't exist. No basket anywhere near where the map says it should be. No sign of any tee pad (the other 8 had cement pads). I thought about changing this to say it is an 8-hole course but maybe it is temporarily pulled. By the Christmas Grinch who is fixing a chain on one side that won't chain.

Overall this is a simple park course - mostly short, mostly open but decent enough to play multiple times if you lived nearby. My enjoyment was enhanced when I threw a "field ace" on the longest hole - i.e. I deuced #7 (the 447 foot hole) where I'm sure my first throw was barely 275 feet. But my favorite hole was #4.
