A New Flavor at Diamond X drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Unique upland desert terrain and landscape makes for a memorable experience.
- Orange banded, well mounted Innova Discatchers are highly visible and professionally mounted.
- Teepads are dirt, but (for now at least) flat, generously sized, and work nicely.
- Small detail work around the tees (rock retaining walls, etc) add a polished feel on certain holes
- Tees have signs with hole #, distance, and par.
- Variety of shot shapes, elevation changes, distances, obstacles, and elevated baskets make for a course that does not feel repetitive or boring.

Cons:

- While the baskets and tees are numbered, navigation is confusing and paths are not always well worn. This will improve with time as the course is new, but for now, and to a unfamiliar player, could make for a frustrating experience. Even with UDisc I was wandering a bit at times to find my way to the next tee.
- Decent walk from the parking area to Tee #1. (Not necessarily a "con" for me, as I do see this as part of the Diamond X experience, but others might find it taxing).
- There is no water or bathroom access at the site. Make sure you are prepared.
- Fairways have cactus, Yucca, and disc-eating shrubs. Expected for a Desert course, but increase odds of losing a disc or getting cut up to find your throw.

Other Thoughts:

This is a rugged, desert disc golf course. Yes, that does present some "difficulties" if compared to your average park course, but I don't think that justifies lower ratings. If you come prepared (Pants, water, endurance, and patience) you will have a great time at the new Orange Layout at Diamond X.

This course needs some time to be worn in and mature. Over time navigation will be easier as paths are worn in and fairways are used. I suspect there could be some improvements coming down the line from the Billings Disc Golf Club as well. I think the course would benefit from rubber tee pads to preserve the tees and prevent erosion. I also think that a few well placed, visible signs could dramatically improve navigation.

All in all I highly recommend, and if you really feel adventurous, try to tackle both Diamond X courses in one day.

Rugged 'n' Fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Unique terrain: mix of bouldery slopes and large sweeping prairie hills.+ Nice views: looking out over the Yellowstone Valley and Billings, with a backdrop of gigantic sandstone cliffs looming constantly. + Some tricky technical greens and a few tree obstacles mixed in to provide a fair mix of challenges. Also big rocks. + Discatcher 28s with bright Orange bands are installed well, easy to see, and catch appropriately. + There are a handful of holes -- especially the first stretch of the course -- that really capture the feeling of the old timey Diamond X experience. Fun lines and weird elevation and sometimes big punishment potential. It puts a smile on your face.

Cons:

- Minimal infrastructure on site. No water, no bathrooms. Be prepared and bring your own stuff. - A series of holes (a lot of the back 9) are mostly open and feature only gentle elevation changes. This stretch feels redundant at times. Distance is the biggest challenge here, and often some wind. - Some long walks to be had. Parking lot to the first tee, hole 5 to 6, 13 to 14, and 18 back to the lot.

Other Thoughts:

* The tees are natural (dirt) and generously sized. They are currently in good shape and many have nice detail -- framed in rock, benches, etc. -- that was all hand built with a lot of local effort. I think the tees are great but they will require some maintenence or else erosion will have its way. * The terrain is great and challenging, but not especially accessible. I have fun playing in the steep sandstone. Some may not see it the same. * This is a fun track but not as extreme as the classic Diamond X courses. You don't play all of the elevation available in the park. It's a good alternative for anyone afraid of heights, or not interested in losing a disc down a 100' cliff. If you want to play it all in a day, the Orange course would be a good warm-up before you tackle the big stuff. * Watch out for snakes, I guess. There are rattlesnakes in the park. Getting bitten would probably be a bad idea.
