fav course I've played, variety of terrain 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The signage is second to none, there are multiple pin placements, and all of the cement tee boxes are very clean. All in all it's what I would call a 'destination' course, certainly worth the stop.

Cons:

I played the first several holes with a local which really helped as the first half is very wooded and a couple of blind shots behind trees. I never found hole 13 and couldn't find the tee box for hole 18. I'm sure I just didn't find them.

Other Thoughts:

This is perhaps my favourite disc golf course I've played to date. I'm on a PNW road trip and am taking my sweet time, decided to check out a few courses on my drive. This one popped up and intrigued me as being not too long, right off of I-5 and nicely wooded.
It got all of those spot on and then some! The course really opens up on the back 9 and some more distance is needed in your drives, but still nothing much more than about 350-400ft.

I Digs The DIG! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Championship course? Nope! Intermediate level then? Nope! Dog Island is a nice little recreational level course. It's not trying to impress you. It's fun and challenging for those 14 year kids playing with one disc or the father teaching his son.

The course has concrete tee pads and Innova baskets. The signs are metal and give all the needed information.

Dog Island plays all throughout this park with two names, Ayer Park & Dog Island Park. It starts out by the front parking lot and plays all the way to the far back park where it ends, then you have to walk back against the disc golf traffic. Remember to duck coming around on # 8.

There were a lot of fun Little, short throws here. # 2, throwing from off the small hill to a basket 171' below was fun.

# 6 was a cool LITTLE hole! Just 131' but the basket sits in a small hole and is guarded by four trees.

# 7 was a par two, 148', with this basket guarded by 5-6 trees. I don't think any hole should ever be a par 2. Give the player an easy birdie.

The back nine playing in the far park are longer and more open. They're almost like playing a whole other course.

This also makes a great pit stop the drive up I-5.

Cons:

# 1 basket currently missing.
Scruffy homeless population hanging around.
Front 9 is pitch and putt.
Back 9 is open and more boring.
Fairly long walk back after 18.
You're walking right into blind throws (# 8) on walk back out.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course quite a bit. I actually enjoyed the short front 9 more. All those ACE runs are great fun. I really enjoy seeing middle school kids and families out playing and this is the kind of course that you'll see them on.

Stop and play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course was well marked and signs depicted where the baskets were.

Dual basket placement, long and short. The first time I played this course the baskets were set short and I shot two under. This time the baskets were set long and the course was much more challenging and I shot two over.

I played the course in just under an hour as a single player, which was my goal as I used this stop to stretch my legs on a long drive from Sacramento to the Oregon Boarder. I played on my return trip and found it to be a very well laid out course with challenging shots on the front 9. The baskets on the back 9 are more in the open.

Cons:

The surrounding area, near the Sacramento River, seems to serve as a homeless camp. The restrooms appear to be where the homeless folks bath and not pick up after themselves. The City of Redbluff is trying to clean this park up, but the bathrooms were not in service.

There is no play structure to occupy young kids while dad sneaks in a round of DG. I would not suggest leaving the kids and wife in the car either as they would likely get approached by the homeless folks...

Other Thoughts:

This course is right off the I-5 and south of Casa Ramos, which serves REALLY good Mexican food.

Da Bluff 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

good tee pads. pretty straight forward layout. Front 9 has some technical throws, possible ace runs, flora to deal with which made it fun. Back 9 pretty much in the open for you to air it out to most holes. Good course for newbies.

Cons:

CROWDED! played on a monday around 1pm and the course was packed. Holes are close together so it makes for heads on a swivel when it was this crowded. hole 18 ends in the middle of the course so you have to walk out through other players approaches. bathrooms at the course was closed down with chailn link around it so prepare for no facilities.

Other Thoughts:

Was fun for being a new course. just had a few quirks and obviously popular with the locals. they were all very friendly and no issues when we were crossing paths. It is nestled in between some other good courses making for a good option when you tag it on with Anderson or Black Butte.

Dog Island 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some nice signs with hole layout and distance to pin(s). Nice cement tees, most are 3'x8', but some are 3'x6'. Nice DiscCatcher baskets with hole numbers on them. Several ace runs. Most holes birdie-able. Porta-potty (no tp) by hole 1. Restrooms by hole 10. A few holes play through a moderately wooded area with unforgiving rough. These holes are more technical requiring shot shaping. Some holes have new alternate pin positions making the holes longer. There is a wooded area of the park that could make for some additional and more challenging holes. Low traffic.

Cons:

Some holes play close to one another. Most holes are pretty wide open. Some holes play close to one another. Boring back and forth layout for the first 7 holes of the course; holes feel very repetitive, all throwing straight. Some holes are very short and not challenging. Hole 18 ends in the middle of the park; not by hole 1 or the parking area. All holes throw straight or have a left hook, completely favoring RHBH/LHFH players. At hole 11 and for the remainder of the course it is wide open with only a small number of trees to shoot around. Little to no elevation change on the course. Only a few remotely challenging holes. Most baskets are not protected at all. Very poorly placed mando on hole 18, forcing a long late left hook.

Other Thoughts:

This is a quick fun 18 hole course that offers a little challenge on a few holes, but is mostly very easy. It's a pretty boring round, even your first time playing. The course offers little to no shot variety as all holes throw straight or left. Hole 18 put the nail in the coffin for me that this course was clearly designed by a RHBH player that knows nothing of shot variety. The thickly wooded area just South of holes 16-19 could make for some nice additional, more technical (and challenging) holes, but the course right now is very easy and boring.

*Fun course
*Nice maps for the holes
*Friendly people for the most part, you still run into the dumb a** from time to time.
*Easy to navigate

Cons:

*Fun first half, second half kinda bland
*Muddy after rain
*One trail in, one trail out. long walk back from 18 and its all sorts of in the way of other golfers
*Hole 3 is not parking lot friendly
*Grass is a little high is some areas, but not terrible

Other Thoughts:

Good course and I am very glad Red Bluff has a place for Disc golf, and the fact that it is using Dog Island Park for something.

Pretty Good Use of Space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- I love the front 9 on this course. They're short but they really used the trees and elevation to full advantage.
- Well laid out holes requiring you to use different kinds of shots to navigate around the trees.
- Beautiful park with lots of big shade trees and ivy growing on them.
- Good beginner course or to help get someone interested in the game as it doesn't require really long drives to do decently.
- Well used terrain. (For example if you hit a tree wrong on hole 5 your disc will likely go down into a deep creek bed giving you a difficult 2nd shot.)
- Tee signs with well drawn maps to help you sort out which basket to go for in cramped sections.
- A LOT of work has been done to clear out the area of blackberry vines

Cons:

- Holes 8 and 10 are almost identical.
- The back 9 loses a lot of the wooded feel of the front 9 and plays a lot more like some baskets thrown in a city park. (Though in their defense, that's what it is)
- Back 9 cramped in places with multiple baskets and tees in the same area.
- Would like to have seen them use the area over the bridge to either stretch some holes out or un-cramp some of the back 9.
- Course can be pretty busy, especially on weekends causing you to slow play. Also since the main walkway runs through a few of the holes you have to stop and wait for pedestrians/joggers/etc going through.

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course and feel like they did a lot with what they had. They took a park that was almost ONLY used by drug addicts and homeless people and cleaned it up and turned it into a place that a lot of people in town can use and enjoy. Also now there are a lot less of the prior residents, though sometimes you still see a few homeless, I think none of them live there anymore after getting tired of discs falling on their head in their sleep. The amount of work put in to remove all of those berry vines alone should garner some sort of metal to the people who built this place.

Amazing considering the resources available 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wonderful use of hills, trees, and water
Variable angles required for tee offs
Lovely park with unusual Midwestern trees
Mostly short to mid holes

Cons:

Short to mid length cold be a con, too
Met a few unsavory sorts and homeless people there

Other Thoughts:

This is a course I always enjoy. I get a workout on my backhands, forehands, and more. Holes curve right to left and left to right, with trees often really dictating the tee shot, forcing practice on tricky shots. Yet this is not a dense forest or a dogleg course; it's just well-designed. You won't crank up on these short holes, though several that look short in measurement are longer when you hyper wa out around the trees.

Nice little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 7, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This park is all for and about disc golf. It can be crowded on weekends. Solid cement tees, with the hole number on the tee. It is a very easy to follow course. Course only has a few holes over 300ft which is unusual for a disc course. I find this a great thing. There are so many great hole placements that the course remains challanging. You also have more chances for a birdy which definatly makes the game much more fun! No distance signs yet. There is not alot of brush to get your disc lost in , nor are there any true water holes. Love the baskets too. The locals have taken alot of time to clean up this park and it looks great. You can have your dog on leash and the river is right off the trail. Nice old growth trees and lots of birds.

Cons:

Close to I-5. Muddy often in winter. Some holes are alittle close to the other holes, heads up. And baskets alittle close to one another, as well as a few of the tee placements. This is probably due to lack of space. The design of the course took full advantage of a small area. Its not too much of a con just a heads up, especially around 8 and 16. It is hard to put any cons on a course the locals worked so hard to obtain and clean up. It is a great mid-range course. I know it is going to improve my approachs greatly.

Other Thoughts:

The more I play this course the more I appreciate it. It has something for all levels of throwers. There are too many courses out there where distance and power rule.In my opinion most course have way too many holes over 400ft. If you are not a great distance or power thrower then your game can suck. Not here. This is a very unique course in that it utilizes a small space well and the designers have created a fantastic course for all levels of players, not just people with power drives. Dog Island course offers something for everyone. The locals are super friendly too. Thanks Nor.Cal disc club for this great new course.

Red Bluff 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Front section had nice technical shots (although short)
-Cement tee pads and Innova baskets
-Not Crowded (played on a Friday afternoon)
-Dog Friendly (probably should be on leash)
-Quick round of play
-Not hard to navigate

Cons:

-No signs with distances to pin
-Muddy when wet
-Back 9 was not very exciting but worth playing

Other Thoughts:

This course makes good on the space that is available. Being from Chico it is a nice finish to the day after playing Anderson. The course is right off of I-5. The only tourneys that should be played here are ace races and kids torneys. Overall a fun little course I think it as at least worth playing once.

Pros:

- Good variety of trees around the course, with holes ranging from poke and pray to wide open let'er rip shots.
- Hole lengths varying from decently long drives down to short little pitch and putt holes.
- Little bits of elevation change are used well providing some small downhills at least.
- Most holes straight ahead with a couple going to the left or right.
- Friendly locals
- Many ace-able holes
- Good course for geting beginers into the sport of disc golf
- Easy access from I-5
- Easy to find (right on main st.)
- Concrete teepads with the hole # in them
- There is a crudly drawn map of the first 9 holes on a picnic table next to hole 1

Cons:

- Hole 9 is a "poke and pray" type hole with no real visable route to get to the basket
- Nasty rough to the side of a few holes, but you can tell alot of work has been put in to get rid of this
- Standing on hole 11's tee you can see 4 baskets that are within the range that they could be part of the hole.
- A couple of holes feel like they are just cramed in there to make it 18 holes.
- No signs yet, but they arn't realy needed as most holes the basket is visable.

Other Thoughts:

A fun new course for the people of Red Bluff, an area that has needed a course for quite a while. The course makes great use of the peice of land that they were given and you can tell that the locals have put alot of work in geting the blackberrys and other junk cleared out. Not a super hard course, but still fun and definatly challenging for beginers. Definatly worth a stop if your traveling on the 5 and need a break. This course also makes a good option for the people of Redding as thier courses arn't as good as this one.

Pros:

The course is placed well with the land provided. It offers a variation of routes and accomadates lefties and righties. Although most off the holes are shorter than 300' the trees offer plenty of difficulty.... love the Ivy. Not a lot of garbage and stuff around, the course is kept nice and clean. Bring your plastic, as a lot of holes will make you think about what to throw!

Cons:

As of now there is no signage. The basic rule is ( The stamp is on the back of the tee-pad, with hole number. Face forward and the pad pretty much points at the next basket. Hole 8 and 10 are the only exceptions due to the big turns.) Too much traffic can slow play. 18 basket and 11 basket are kinda close to each other.

Other Thoughts:

This course is now my home course and we put a lot of time and effort into this. Come out and enjoy, we can only improve from here. Signs are on the way, and more benches. Come DIG it!

Pros:

A few good technical holes, with an overall good mix of different shots. Very nice concrete tees with the hole number in the tee and new Discatcher baskets. The layout is easy to follow with pathways and tee signs that point you in the right direction. Good use of trees and landscape, even without much elevation change. Four holes are par 2!

Cons:

Short distances on most of the holes makes for very low scores for advanced players. No real uphill or downhill elevation change either.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great first course for the town of Red Bluff and an excellent addition to the short list of courses in the area. Definitely a good place to learn the game or get some practice.
