A beautiful professional level course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Great signage
- Beautiful views everywhere
- Cart rentals available
- Professionally designed by The Preserve designer; Cale Leiviska
- Great mix of long, short and medium holes
- Licensed area for alcohol consumption
- With tee pads, it's a championship level course

Cons:

- Long tee pads are very small and skinny
- No short tee pads
- Very little respect from ball golfers
- A few dangerous blind shots for ball golfers
- Maybe a few too many water hazards
- No local players around (this could have been the day)

Other Thoughts:

I came to Thunder Bay to fish and play disc golf, I haven't been in almost 10 years and this course came highly recommended so I couldn't wait to play it. The staff was very nice, I was paid and on the course in a few minutes. The tee pads are really the only thing that needs work on this course. The long tees are turf but they are kind of skinny, lumpy and unlevel. The short tees are just flags on the grass but there is nice signage to lay it all out.

Playing the course was a lot of fun, I threw two rounds on each set of tees. The long tees are definitely long but for those with either a bigger arm or precise accuracy, they are mostly parable with some birdies but the long tees could be a difficult disc losing experience.
For pro players or advanced/intermediate amateurs, the long course will provide a challenge and a lot of enjoyment.

I played the short course in a light rain with no ball golfers around so there was less rush this time. There are no tee pads on the short course but the course is so well groomed that the footing isn't really an issue with decent shoes. Anyone playing at any level will enjoy the short course, there's a great mix of challenges that play more for accuracy and precision without needing big distance. This was one of the nicest sets of short tees that I have ever played, I lost no discs and had a great time.

I have played many shared ball/disc courses and they normally operate just fine but the Dragon Hills ball golfers are not very accommodating. I was yelled at twice to get off fairways and around hole 6 or 7, two golfers hit balls 10-12 feet over my head with no "fore" or apology. The blind shots on the ball golf course don't help but the attitude was surprising. One thing that would help this is more disc golfers. In the 7 hours I spent at DHDGC, I didn't meet or even see a single other disc golfer. This could have been the weather, it wasn't a very nice day.

The entire course is built on / around a lot of swampy ponds and creeks that become a little more involved with the long tees but are still very present on the shorter version. The bottoms are all covered in loon and goose poop so tread lightly. I recommend having at least 1-2 discs you don't care about in the bag for these shots.

Dragon Hills DGC is by far the nicest course I played in Thunder Bay. The design is 100% professional in every way. It's great seeing a small town becoming a disc golf hot spot and with a course like this, I can see some big events making their way to Thunder Bay down the road. I will be back!

Absolutely Stunning 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Unrivaled natural landscapes
- Ample distance
- Picturesque (to say the least)
- A challenging course
- Affordable an has carts

Cons:

- Signage is a work in process
- Short tee pads need to be installed

Other Thoughts:

This course is well on its way to becoming a beast. With a few refinements (signage and tee pads) this will be an absolute must for anyone in the region.
