Short But Technical (in the Woods) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- A course map near the Hole 1 long/pro tee.
- Well-marked long/pro tees, with alternate short/am tees also available.
- LOVE the narrow alleys in the trees! Makes the short hole distances more challenging than one might assume.

Cons:

- Uneven tee surfaces.
- Holes 1-3 have issues related to the safety of other park users. Would be very easy to have a disc vs. pedestrian/pet issue on any of those holes. Can be overcome by smart, patient play! But all it will take is 1-2 careless/selfish players throwing into nearby individuals to create problems.
- Course is very short, though they've done what they can to make it fun/challenging despite its limited length.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed playing this course more than I thought I would before I arrived. Holes 1-3 underwhelmed me, but I truly enjoyed Holes 4-9 in the trees. It's the type of course a good/great player could shoot an 18-20 on (-7 to -9). But that being said, it's just as easy to be forced to scramble for a par-3 on a few of those wooded holes, if you don't hit your alleys/gaps off the tee.

shorty course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

the course is well signed and easy to follow. there are enough obstacles and doglegs to keep things interesting, not every hole is a straight shooter. the course is well maintained and there are not a lot of places to loose a disc.

Cons:

the tee pad signs are placed in a way that it would be possible to hit your hand on one after throwing. the course overall is short and fairly basic. the tee pads are signed but have not been improved, therefore you often throw from lumpy grass and other uneven surfaces. the course is not overly challenging for anybody beyond the beginner/recreational stage.

Other Thoughts:

I appreciate the efforts of the city of Port Alberni to bring disc golf to their community. it is the only course on the highway 4 corridor, with no courses to the west until you get to Japan, and no courses to the east within a 2 hour drive. Port Alberni is a resource town that has been down on it's luck in recent years. it's nice to see the city still investing in it's public spaces for the good of the citizens. the course is only worth stopping at if you are on your way through town anyways, probably not worth the drive from Nanaimo unless you get really bored of the 4 star rated Bowen Park :) it is a perfect course to introduce new players to the sport.
