Washington's Newest Course Along The Skagit River! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Washington's newest course (June 2019) is a located along the Skagit River in Edgewater Park. I don't believe that this is the finished product as there are currently small carpet tee pads without permanent signs. The signs there now are small handwritten concrete blocks which sit on the ground. They're a little hard to spot right now. The baskets, however, are very lovely dark blue Discatchers. They're pretty special.

The course starts close to the small children's playground. # 1 is 201' and plays northbound under a low canopy of trees. I'm sure a roller is the preferred shot here. You walk under the bridge to get to holes 2 to 6. Walk back to play # 7. To get to # 8, you have to walk back toward the baseball field in order to find a gate. # 8 plays around a tree to a basket set close to the fence. We had to skip the 400' # 9 as it plays to a basket on the far side of the bandstand and the Mount Vernon High School band was giving a concert.

The back nine is somewhat more wooded and technical than the front 9. # 10 is a fairly easy little 200' hyser around the wooded area. # 12 was the first hole that I really liked. It was maybe 300' around the wooded area on the right and the basket is set up a small hill. # 13 is long, blind and ruggedly, undeveloped. I think # 14 was my choice for the Signature hole here. It's 351' but the initial throw off the tee is very tight.

But it is a plus that the course completes a loop. It's also suggested that you could always play a nine by playing # 18 as # 9.

Cons:

17 and 18 were kind of disappointing. # 17 tees off of the bandstand, which I like, but the basket is 300' and wide open. # 18 is about the same distance playing back to a basket near the parking lot.

Carpet tee pads are coming unraveled in places.

Needs signage.

Somewhat convoluted layout.

Sketchy characters lurking about.

People parking next to baskets engaging in who knows what?

We had to skip holes # 9 and 17 because of a band concert but I believe that is an anomaly.

It's flat.

Some holes seemed long just for the sake of being long. This isn't going to be a championship course so concentrate on making it a great little rec course.

Other Thoughts:

I'm fairly confident that the Mount Vernon authorities are happy to have this course installed here, if for no other reason, it adds people to a park that has probably seen it's share of criminal activity over the years. It just seems like a place perfect for illicit hook ups, drug activity and whatever else you can conjure up. Hopefully, the presence all the disc golfers might dissuade some of that.

With better tee pads and signage, this will be a decent, average course. I will keep an eye on it and up my rating to a 2.5 when these improvements are made.
