Questionable layout

Pros:

Elk Mound Park DGC is a small 9 hole course located about 15 minutes west of Eau Claire, just a few minutes off of the highway. The course is permanent and free to play.

The baskets are white Dynamic Discs Patriots. These were all mounted nice and level and caught nicely. The white band and cage make them easy to spot from the tee. One pin position per hole.

The tee signs are just a 5 or so foot tall 4'x4' with an orange metal number affixed to the top of each. No distances or pars listed, but 7 of the 9 baskets can be seen from the tee so not really a big deal. At least you know where you're supposed to tee off from.

The tees themselves are just grass. No issues with these since the course just opened this year. Probably won't get too much play so it shouldn't be an issue for years, if ever.

The flow of the course is very easy to follow. The first hole starts back next to the road you drove to the park on, just on the north side of the park entrance road. From there the course plays generally clockwise around the outskirts of the park, ending between the two ball fields.

Cons:

The safety issues here are pretty astounding. Hole one has you throwing over a sand volleyball court. Hole throws either left or right of a small pavillion. Possibly through it with a shank. Not only that but it also plays over a basketball court. That's right.

Hole 7 was a new one for me. You start outside the fence for the ball field. The basket is on the complete other side of the ball field, pretty much foul line to foul line, with the whole ball field being the actual fairway. Don't think I've ever seen that before. Usually they just play along the outer edges of the fence, never over them.

The last two holes play the more traditional way, along the outside of the fences. Makes these holes unplayable if there's any games going on.

Very real possibility of a lost disc if you go OB off the fairway. The park is lined by a four foot tall metal fence topped with barbed wire.

Other Thoughts:

I have a lot of cons listed, most being safety related. If the park is empty those won't be an issue obviously. And I highly doubt that it's ever real busy anyway. It'd still be a little annoying to show up then have to skip a number of holes due to other activities going on.

Not a bad little course if empty and you happen to be passing through. It'd be a great place to play in the winter to be honest. Pretty little park and a pretty fast round, just not much for replay value. Worth a play at least once though.
