Ferdinand, the Friendly Bull?

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

When you come to play the nine hole park-style course in Ferdinand, Indiana, you're only a couple of miles north of Santa Claus, so you might also want to visit, while you're in the area 😊

But seriously, this disc golf course is just a mile and a half off the interstate, so it makes for a good stretch on a road trip elsewhere. They have really attractive and informative signage, DisCatcher baskets and adequate (if small at 4' x 8'), mostly level, concrete tees, and hole distances appropriate for the recreational to intermediate player. You will not lose a disc (no underbrush and tremendously well maintained), but you will likely find a friendly line amongst the options here. I nicknamed the holes Upstart, Ceiling, Lane, OnTop, Fade, Gapper, UpHill, Lefty, and Ugh! So that should certainly combine with a look at the hole distances and elevation changes here to give you a fair idea if this is a course you'd be interested in playing.

Cons:

I was actually really enjoying this course for eight holes, and getting ready to give it a 2.5 or better until I came to the ninth. A pretty, downhill tee and fairway points dead into a cluster of 40-50' pines with no apparent gap, theoretically leading to the blind basket position on the other side of the clearing beyond them. The problem is the mounted park bench facing the other way that's only 8' past the basket. I rate first on safety, and this is a huge 'Ugh!'! If it were my course, I'd sacrifice what they were trying to do here and move the basket at least 50' away from where it currently resides, ideally to a location with a suggested fairway line.

Other Thoughts:

They do have an unusual feature to control erosion around the pin here, as they've poured a 3' x3' concrete slab at each basket location. Hopefully it will be a rare skip to actually cause your discs a problem, but we have several courses in Cincinnati that still have 40 year old, 6' round, asphalt 'penalty pads' that can be frustrating…
