Fort's Course is Fairly Fun

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 16, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

In the back of Fort Leavenworth's military installation hides a surprisingly well-set course. Nine rubber mat tees, nine tee signs with poles painted safety orange to guide you through the round with ease, and nine baskets with some yellow spray paint on them so they stand out also.

The first four holes play through some mature trees, with shot shaping being a premium. The first basket sits nestled between three mighty trunks, the second is around a right turn in the fairway about 225 feet uphill, the third is a short, challenging tunnel to the pin, and the fourth is the best hole on the course: low-hanging branches guard both options; a 300ft shot that skips to the right at the end after beating the last tree, or a left finishing forehand that goes the full 320ft and stops. Both are helped by being downhill drives, but the angle needed to get under the ceiling and around the final trees is quite a challenge.

There are some tough distances on the back half: 6 and 7'd corners make them deceptively long and a very tough deuce, and 8 is a full-power drive for most people. These come coupled with some tough pin spots; 7 sits in a pocket in the treeline and 8 has a decent little drop-off about 15ft past the pin.

Cons:

Unfortunately after the first four holes things get more bland. 5-7 all have trees blocking the right side, but are just air after that. 5 also has some horse-jumping obstacles stopping the roller play. 8 and 9 both have obstacles that don't belong: 8 has two shipping containers in front of the pin which I doubt the Army wants you climbing if your disc ends up on top of them, and 9 has the girl scout hut parallel to the basket.

The baskets are apparently old Chainstars… and they are old. And the rubber tees, while in good shape, become incredibly slick with any moisture on them.

There are many un-creative basket placements. 4-6 and 9 are all no challenge on the green once you've beaten the fairway obstacles.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fine little course for a fine little military installation town. The distances keep parts of it challenging, but it's not a total beatdown the whole way through. Keeps things balanced for anyone who wants to try out the game.

Access was easier than I imagined. I used the online link (which I've added on the Course Info page), got a text the next morning saying I was approved for my chosen date (plus an extra day). Drove up to the main gate, handed over my ID, got a chuckle from the gate guard that I was going to play in an inch of snow, then headed to the course. Speaking of: don't turn off before the Camp Conestoga sign, just go straight when the main road veers left after the sign. Yes, I had a small misadventure.

Overall, this is a quick play, but a decent little drive off of any main highways. For baggers, I would say this is the lowest priority of the three courses in Leavenworth, but still worth trying to get to. It's fun, has holes that cater to any player, holes that will challenge every player, but no holes that are complete duds.

Fort Leavenworth 9 Hole Course

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beginner friendly course with a decent layout. My son and I play this as a practice course. The course layout is five holes out and four holes back, like the previous review stated. Lots of birdie opportunities if you're able to throw 275-300 ft. The nice thing about courses like this, is you can make up new holes with the existing layout to make the course more challenging. I've uploaded an 18 hole layout my son and I came up with to the media tab.

Cons:

The signage isn't great and the baskets are portable (held down with rocks). There's no actual parking. The current 9 hole design doesn't require a large variety of shots, but the road being OB does require some accuracy on a couple holes.
9 Hole Layout:
1. Straight shot (OB to left)
2. Uphill slightly to the right
3. Straight shot
4. Downhill shot with some obstacles
5. Straight shot with hole close to entrance (OB to left)
6. Slight dog leg right (OB to left)
7. Dog Leg right (OB to left)
8. Longest hole on course, hole is tucked behind two buildings
9. No tee pad, hole is to the right of yellow building

Decent Enough Rec Course Close By The Barking Kennels! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 5, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

First, you have to stop by the visitor's Control Center to pick up a guest pass. I don't think I would bring any firearms, illegal drugs or knives onto the base. There's a sign every 50 feet warning you.

The disc golf course at Fort Leavenworth seems to sit way in the back of the fort just past the horse stables and finally the dog kennel. You will be serenaded by what seems like hundreds of barking dogs. The course sits in a parklike setting with scattered trees, picnic benches and nice green grass. I, Think, the course starts right beside the restrooms. There is no signage! I, Think, I somehow managed to navigate this course owing to my vast experience, keen navigational skills and mostly blind voodoo luck. I, Think, the course starts beside the bathrooms and then plays five holes out towards the barking hounds, then plays four holes back to the two concrete bunkers and then finishes by the yellow building next to the restrooms.

The baskets are temporary models which are attached to the ground. The pads are rubber mats. The holes are mostly around 275'. Most are straight with a few scattered trees to avoid. I like # 4 with it's slight downhill throw through a few trees. # 6 tees off between the Camp Miles (Boys Scouts) and Camp Conestoga (Girl Scouts) signs. Both # 6 & 7 require a anhyser throw. The # 7 basket is tucked up and around in a #mall grassy knoll.

The # 8 basket is directly behind the two bunkers. I never located the # 9 tee pad.

Cons:

No signage makes navigation a challenge.

Recreational challenge and length.

Barking dogs made me want to poke sharp sticks in my ears to ease my pain.

Hassle of sign in process to get onto the base. Background check eliminates approx 50% of all known disc golfers.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fairly average course once you get acquainted with the navigation issues. I don't know how much play it gets from the soldiers and I doubt if that many civilians go through the hassles to get on base. It's too bad because it has the bones to be a nice little course for the folks living here on base.
