Pros:
In the back of Fort Leavenworth's military installation hides a surprisingly well-set course. Nine rubber mat tees, nine tee signs with poles painted safety orange to guide you through the round with ease, and nine baskets with some yellow spray paint on them so they stand out also.
The first four holes play through some mature trees, with shot shaping being a premium. The first basket sits nestled between three mighty trunks, the second is around a right turn in the fairway about 225 feet uphill, the third is a short, challenging tunnel to the pin, and the fourth is the best hole on the course: low-hanging branches guard both options; a 300ft shot that skips to the right at the end after beating the last tree, or a left finishing forehand that goes the full 320ft and stops. Both are helped by being downhill drives, but the angle needed to get under the ceiling and around the final trees is quite a challenge.
There are some tough distances on the back half: 6 and 7'd corners make them deceptively long and a very tough deuce, and 8 is a full-power drive for most people. These come coupled with some tough pin spots; 7 sits in a pocket in the treeline and 8 has a decent little drop-off about 15ft past the pin.
Cons:
Unfortunately after the first four holes things get more bland. 5-7 all have trees blocking the right side, but are just air after that. 5 also has some horse-jumping obstacles stopping the roller play. 8 and 9 both have obstacles that don't belong: 8 has two shipping containers in front of the pin which I doubt the Army wants you climbing if your disc ends up on top of them, and 9 has the girl scout hut parallel to the basket.
The baskets are apparently old Chainstars… and they are old. And the rubber tees, while in good shape, become incredibly slick with any moisture on them.
There are many un-creative basket placements. 4-6 and 9 are all no challenge on the green once you've beaten the fairway obstacles.
Other Thoughts:
This is a fine little course for a fine little military installation town. The distances keep parts of it challenging, but it's not a total beatdown the whole way through. Keeps things balanced for anyone who wants to try out the game.
Access was easier than I imagined. I used the online link (which I've added on the Course Info page), got a text the next morning saying I was approved for my chosen date (plus an extra day). Drove up to the main gate, handed over my ID, got a chuckle from the gate guard that I was going to play in an inch of snow, then headed to the course. Speaking of: don't turn off before the Camp Conestoga sign, just go straight when the main road veers left after the sign. Yes, I had a small misadventure.
Overall, this is a quick play, but a decent little drive off of any main highways. For baggers, I would say this is the lowest priority of the three courses in Leavenworth, but still worth trying to get to. It's fun, has holes that cater to any player, holes that will challenge every player, but no holes that are complete duds.
