Blue Ridge Blunder

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.339 Rating) A somewhat typical niner, located in paradise, and in need of investment.
- PARK BACKDROP - Wowza! Had this course been in a flat corn field in southern Illinois, it's a half star lower on my scoring sheet. The Blue Ridge Mountains take up the entire eastern horizon. It's glorious. If only the course were as amazing as its views.
- PAVILION - There is a stunning 2-story viewing pavilion in the heart of the layout. I actually tack on a couple hundredths of a point when a course has a shelter feature. For Glen Maury, I doubled the shelter bonus.
- VARIETY FOR A NINER - The play type diversity is better than most niners. Holes (1) and (4) are wooded tunnel shots. Hole (3) starts open and finishes in the woods. Hole (5) is an awesome downhill bomb with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the backdrop. Hole (6) is a huge upshot and (7) has a 30-degree slanted open fairway. (8) and (9) add no variety value to the course and just get players back to the parking area.
- CHALLENGE - I played terrible and finished with one birdie and one bogey. The terrible tees make every hole more difficult. With concrete tees, I'd say the course delivers MA3 level gameplay overall.

Cons:

Someone built-it obviously, but did they then vanish from the earth?
- UNFINISHED - Glen Maury apparently had it's baskets and tee stakes planted back in 2021. Fast forward to fall 2024. Some of the stakes have gone missing and the three wooded holes are now overgrown. Other than mowing the open holes, I'd guess that nothing else has been added or maintained since opening the course.
- AMENITIES - If there were any less amenities than what's currently here at this course, it will cease to be a course. It's just baskets and a few stakes. The staked tee areas are not level and are dreadful. As for the baskets, they are MachVs I think. There is a practice basket oddly. So, my mistake, one amenity could be stricken and it would still barely qualify as a course. Off the course there is a restroom building, which was boarded up for some reason.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - Good Luck. No number markings, no signs, no map, no arrows. I used a navigational app, and barely made my way around. I may have played holes (2) and (8) wrong as I never saw a stake.
- TIME PLAY - I logged a 30 minute solo round in an empty park early in the morning. There is very tall grass on the fringes on a handful of holes. Misfiring deep into that is going to be a disaster in the making.

Other Thoughts:

Glen Maury's disc golf set-up could have been a whole lot better. The hard-to-find terrible tees with a few tough unkept holes are not going to entice beginners or even regulars to show up here. The main attraction here is clearly the view from up top. This is one of the few places I've been to where I wouldn't even advise most baggers to seek it out. This notion excludes ultra course counting baggers whom are seeking +1000 courses played. I would only recommend this place to players whom are both baggers and nature lovers. Anyways, a 1.25 level course to me and only this high up on my ledger due to the park's beauty. It reminded me heavily of Chattooga Belle Farm in South Carolina, which is another Blue Ridge setting course with unrealized potential.
