Wish I could review

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Just a quick comment

Cons:

I had avoided this course due to some bad reviews on UDisc. More recent reviews were much better so on Labor day (09/40/2023) I took the 30 minute drive out there. 8:15 AM (So well after sunrise) on Labor Day and the gate was closed and locked with a sign saying park hours dawn to dusk. What a disappointment and wasted trip.

A work in progress, with potential

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 31, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

For a 9-hole course, Greene Park offers a surprisingly diverse array of challenges. Tight woods, open bombers, and half-wooded gap shots make for an enjoyable and varied playing experience. The course is located in what seems to be a disc golf-exclusive area of the county park.

The course starts and ends with open park-style field holes, offering a nice warm-up before entering the woods. Hole 1, the longest on the course, starts you off with a 400' moderately downhill bomber to a protected green. Hole 2 is mostly open and slightly uphill, with the basket set between a brushy area and a stand of evergreens.

The middle section of the course shifts gears, traversing heavy woods where precision and angle control become paramount. Distances for the wooded holes ranged from 250 - 300 feet, but distance is not the main challenge and errant drives will likely be punished. This part of the course reminded me of an old-school woods course, and offers the feeling of being isolated in nature.

I enjoyed hole 8, a tight gap shot out of the woods and across an open field to a basket set on the edge of heavy rough. From pictures, hole 9 looks fairly open and uphill, but unfortunately I was running out of daylight and never found the path to the tee (see cons).

Yellow-banded Discatcher baskets looked older than the course, but they were easy to spot in the woods, well mounted, and caught nicely. Blue turf teepads were generously sized, and most were smooth and level (but see cons).

Cons:

The course is new and seems to be a work in progress. As of late August 2022 some of the unfinished amenities made for a frustrating round. I would expect the playing experience to improve as course equipment installation is completed and the course gets more use.

Navigation was sketchy, even with GPS assistance. In several places one needed to either backtrack, loop around, or choose a non-obvious path to reach the next tee. For example, I had to wander around a bit before finding the bridge between holes 1 and 2. "Next tee" signs in appropriate locations would greatly help first-time players here.

Edit September 2022: Multiple sources report that all tee boxes are finished so I am bumping my rating to 2.5.

I ran across a random basket that did not seem to be part of the course. Online comments mentioned a redesign, so I assume that this issue will be corrected.

Disc-eating rough is prevalent in the wooded part of the course. and a healthy crop of poison ivy was flourishing just off the woods fairways. I abandoned one of my discs to the "leaves of three."

Tees were marked with a wooden post listing the hole number, but no distance or hole map. Perhaps tee signs will be added when course improvements are complete.

Some of the existing turf teepads were a bit lumpy, but others were quite nice. Perhaps the lumpy teepads will be improved as coursework progresses.

Other Thoughts:

Greene Park is a new course with impressive variety and a lot of potential. As of late August 2022 a few of the woods holes seemed to be undergoing a redesign and some of the course basics are not yet in place. When I played this made for an occasionally frustrating round, which is reflected in my rating. I look forward to bumping up my rating as course improvements progress.

For closest parking to the first tee, pull over beside the last bend in the park road. Otherwise, park at the gravel lot by the soccer fields and backtrack to the first tee. When I played the parking lot by the soccer fields was pretty full, and raucous cheering accompanied my round for the first few holes.

For traveling players, Greene Park can easily be combined with other nearby courses such as Rochelle Ridge, Rockwater Park, Mountain View, or Raptor's Roost.
