Great Design, But Many Problems 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

To me, this is the best course in the area. There's significant elevation change as the park is higher ground roughly bisected by a low creek. Holes mostly play across the creek or parallel to get the most of the slopes. The course is mostly open, but it can be deceptive. Because it's also pretty long for intermediate players, there's a lot of positional play that you need to consider to score well. The easiest shot to execute sometimes puts you in the worst approach position. On #7, you cross the creek at an angle between two trees, then go up a hill protected by trees to the basket. An easy hyzer fits the gap best, but leaves a tough approach over the trees to the left. The holes can make you pay without heavy rough that eats discs - this is a mark of a good course for me. Being more open, wind factors more heavily on this course than other area courses. There are three sets of tees if you know where they are, so it can be a beast of a challenge or pretty accessible for a beginner. There are nice facilities in the nearby tennis center, where you can buy drinks, discs, and use a bathroom. It's a nice park, so you can take the family. As a local knowing the course well, I love how easy it is to jump around or skip a group of holes and come back to them. There are a lot of places where you can skip 2-4 holes and play them when the course naturally brings you back to them.

Cons:

It's a long list of cons, unfortunately. It's a popular multi-use park, and many people are unaware that it's a disc golf course. There's a well-used trail that meanders through the park that's popular with walkers and runners, so it's not uncommon to have to wait on people to clear. Several times I've encountered picnickers who have set up their blanket right in the ideal landing zone. High schools and colleges use the park for cross-country running, so a few days a year you can expect to find an XC meet, and weekday afternoons during the season the course is very crowded with runners. Tee pads are dirt only and worn to a rut, so they'll stay muddy for a bit after a rain. Only the orange tees are used enough to be easily spotted because of the dirt patch - blues and pros are often difficult or impossible to find. If it's your first time here, you'll likely have a really hard time navigating, even with a map. The creek is small but can swallow a disc in a few spots - watch out for #7 and the right side of #16 especially.

Other Thoughts:

As others have mentioned, this is a hard course to rate. The design/layout to me is really well done, and it's a blast to play. After many years of playing all the area courses, Highland is easily my favorite, but it's hard to recommend to others who are used to concrete tees and decent signage. If you're just passing through, I'd recommend Scotlandville LHC instead. If you're a local or have more time to spare, it's worth it to meet up with someone for a round. I'm rating it a 3.5, but it could easily be 4+ with multiple concrete tees and signage.

Very impressed, very hopeful 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm going to come out and say it: I loved this course. Highland Park DGC is on a large area of land with great slopes, a creek, huge oak trees, and holes which engage them all. Distances are long but fair with open holes that you can easily miss. I loved the challenge, even though it beat me most of the time. Pars were hard for me, playing this for the first time, but each hole had some great lines, or crazy lines. It was thrilling.

And the beauty. Can we talk about the beauty? Maybe it just took me by surprise given the innate flatness of the rest of the Gulf coast, but the old trees and the hills just made this course that much better to play.

So much of this course was just enjoyed because of the challenging shots between trees, into a narrow putting green, through a window off the tee. It seems you're throwing downhill more often than uphill, but that might be because it's just so much more fun.

Cons:

I'm going to be brief here, because this section could easily be longer than the pros, but given how good the course is, that wouldn't be fair.

The tees are natural, and can get muddy after a rain. But they are big enough to throw out of the mud. No signs on the tees, so you're just looking for two hard to find orange dots in the ground.

Seeing the basket from the tees is not always possible, only a con your first time through.

Taking the map helps, but reading the map takes some effort.

Other Thoughts:

Having tee signs and large concrete tees would bump this course up to a 4, almost 4.5. It really is that good. If you can go with a friend, preferably one who has played before, you'll get a lot more out of this course.

I spent way longer than I meant to playing this. Part of that was I ran into two guys who knew the layout a bit and let me play with them. But I honestly didn't realize how long I was there because this course is so engaging.

How Do You Rate This Course? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is such an interesting course to rate. Reviewers have different opinions regarding amenities. Highland Road DGC puts a reviewer to the test. How much do you value amenities such as tee pads, quality of baskets, signage, navigational aids, bag holders, restrooms, benches, etc. versus the quality of the golf itself. Highland Road Park is a big lovely park with rolling hills, a creek which comes into play on a couple of holes and nice grass fairways. Due to the length, intermediate players and above will enjoy this course more than rec types and beginners. Probably four holes are over 500' and there are only two short Ace Run types, # 3 and # 17. Although generally long, there are many holes ( 2, 8, 16 and 18) where you need to hit your line or risk losing strokes.

The elevation here is rare for this part of Louisiana. I don't think that I could pick a signature hole here but there several that stick out as being special. I think # 18 is the prettiest hole on the course and one of the better ones. It's 360' but first you need to thread the gap in the trees before throwing up a small hill with the basket set upon the right.

# 16 is 420' with the early part open but then you have to line up your second shot through a small gap to have a shot at the basket which is perched on a cool, little ledge.

And from the basket, it's just a short hike up the hill back to the parking lot

Cons:

The tee pads are only impossible to locate, in some places there aren't any. This morning, on a beautiful dry, Louisiana morning, the pads were not a issue except the # 18 pad, which slopes slight downward. In the wet weather, they might really affect your throws.

There are no signs so you don't always know the distance but the bigger issue to me was never being able to spot the tee pad from a distance. I was fortunate to have local pro, Casey, act as my guide and course historian. I also had the privilege of watching him attack the course.

There were no benches anywhere and I could have used one. I didn't see any garbage cans but I also don't remember seeing any trash anywhere. Congrats to the local players for packing it out and keeping the course looking good.

Other Thoughts:

I would highly recommend that you try to play this course alone on your first or second trip here. I have stumbled and bumbled my way through many poorly marked courses but Highland Road would be impossible. You would just end up playing safari, on a very big scale.

I don't think many players are willing to ignore the tees here. They're an intregal part of any course and maybe more important on a course this long. The lack of signage would make this a unenjoyable play if you were tackling it yourself. I think the course is excellent. I think it makes for an interesting comparison to the new LHC course , which has awesome amenities. I would probably give the edge to LHC based on it's terrific signage, pads, etc. They are both fine courses and the intermediate players here have two great choices leaving us recreational Greenwood Park which is not a bad consolation prize.

First Course Played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

First course every played so I didn't know what to expect! Open, hilly, trees forming tunnels, small river, steep rocks and lots more variety! It seems like a good course for beginners and experts alike with no short of interesting shots.

Cons:

Our group spent probably spent 20 minutes in total looking for tees and baskets, even with a map. To be fair, it was all our first time on this course. As stated in other reviews, there aren't any actual tee boxes or any signage. Tees are marked by small, 6in orange "pill" disks in the ground and are really hard to spot. Having never played before, I was relying on my group-mates for amenities reference and while they said they had played on nicer courses, this was certainly one of the longest and largest they had ever played on. I am sure if we played here a few more times it will become much easier to navigate.

Other Thoughts:

I will definitely be back as it is certainly a good enough course to get me hooked on the sport! I actually, really liked the low key, "backyard course" vibe we all felt out there. It must be a fun course if we and everyone we met out there were having fun, even with poorly marked tees and wondering around in 107 degree Louisiana swamp heat!

Never Fear 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 29, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I work at the tennis center. We now have updated maps, and if you'd like, I will walk with you most any time. I live super close, so if you ask for me (Clay) and I'm not here, they can call me. We also have a lost & found, which I call every number (they used to not call out-of-town ones). We sell plastic, which is all Innova for now. There are orange pills in every am tee box these days. There is also a blue layout, and yes you'll probably need a guide to play gold. A local golfer has installed signs in the ground with a basic route drawing and distance, on nine holes, if memory serves. We will do the rest when we find some more half cinder blocks.

Cons:

I'm working on signage. My supervisor is all about it, but it has to follow the completion of the gym and splash pad construction. After that I hope to get new baskets for 5 and 14. Then maybe tee pads. That will be after the redesign though. For now, we flip the pills often so as not to have super messy natural trees. When it rains a lot, we are bound to have some slick ones. We locals just tee from beside or behind them.

Could be so much more... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 29, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a great variety of holes requiring many different shots. Natural tees have recently been remarked or painted. Course has Pro, Am, and Junior tees. Wonderful elevation change, which is rare in this area.

Cons:

Multi-use park. There are often cross country runners, pickinckers, and other park goers who are completely unaware or choose to ignore players trying to throw on a basket. Tees have no signs and the course map is out of date.

Other Thoughts:

With a few improvements, this course could easily be a high caliber one. The lack of upkeep lowers its value. Any maintainance is performed by local players when they have time. This course is home to a local league that caters to new and experienced players and families.

unrealized potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great variety of hole types. More of a control course than a distance course, although it has a few long holes. Difficulty varies with season/foliage, and you can play many holes more aggressively when the foliage is not as thick.

Cons:

Course is often used for high school sports. No clear boundaries to disc golf course, so sometimes runners or dog walkers will get in the way.

Other Thoughts:

I don't think the group that runs the parks in BR cares that much about the disc golf course. You pretty much have to jump over ditches to navigate the last 4 holes of the course. I think with a few minor improvements this could be an even better course.

Class of Baton Rouge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Maybe not the best it could be, but for South Louisiana, this is as good as it gets. Elevation changes, challenging throws over hazards, weaving amongst trees, and stays in pretty good shape. Different course in winter compared to summer when leaves are thick and some shots are much tighter. Friendly disc golfers and park patrons alike.

Cons:

A little bit of neglect has left this course a little less than optimal. Would be nice if the tee pads were something other than dirt, if for no other reason identification of tee sets. The only way people know which tees are which is "lore." Otherwise you look for the first worn patch of grass you see after the previous basket. Sometimes you can't even find it and make up your own.

Other Thoughts:

Thanks to whoever updated the map on the site. Use this one rather than ones you may find floating around. The expanded tennis courts took out holes 13 and 14 but there are still 18 holes, so use the map here.

Don't play this course for the first time by yourself. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The pros at Highland Rd. Park are more potential than real. This park sits near the edge of the highlands to the east of the Mississippi River in south Baton Rouge. The elevations changes and mature trees could make this easily one of the nicest courses in Louisiana. There are shots up hills, down hills, across small "valleys" and on flat ground. It has lots of punishing, non OB areas and is just a generally fun area to play in. Still, what is most striking is its unrealized potential to be a great facility for Disc Golf because . . .

Cons:

Navigation is a nightmare. There are no real tee boxes, just mostly-large, ill-defined worn areas in the grass. Most tees are unmarked. Some are impossible to find without asking someone. Some baskets are also difficult to locate from the tees that have either no hole layout signs or signs that are utterly useless.

Additionally, the course map is inaccurate, showing holes that are either numbered incorrectly (due to changes) or that do not exist.

Some of the worn-areas/tees are on hillsides and have obviously led to erosion problems.

This is simply a neglected disc golf course that could be phenomenal. BREC really needs to give this course its due, which is a rebuild and possibly a redesign. And given the amount of play that this course gets, it certainly deserves concrete or paver tee boxes.

Other Thoughts:

If you are reading this review because you are wondering whether to give this course a try while you are in Baton Rouge. Do not waste your time unless you will be playing with someone very familiar with the course. It is that difficult to navigate. Instead, drive up to Baker or Zachary for Greenwood or Flanacher Rd. Parks or both. If you try to play this course for the first time by yourself, you will become puzzled, frustrated and then angry, first at whomever has let this course fall into disrepair and then at yourself for not going somewhere else.

If I were simply rating this course on how well it is laid out and how fun it is to play, I would have rated it much higher. But the serious navigation issues, lack of tee boxes and lack of signs are inexcusable.

Cons:

If you are new to this field like I was a couple of months ago you will get lost. I quit after a couple of holes, got tired of asking folks where the next T was. They say you T-off where the patch of dirt is , well the problem is there are patches of dirt EVERYWHERE.

To Crowded
I've played at this park three times now and all three times I was bombarded by scores of people. The last time I went there were school children using the park for some kind of physical training. When I say a whole school was there I am not kidding. I had to quit because there was just to many people. Joggers, moms with their kids, school kids, old people and their walkers ok the last one was an exaggeration but you get the point. If you decide to go and play there you might want to take someone with you who can stand at the basket and warn the millions of passers by that a flying disc is about to land where they are jogging. Not playing here again!!

Other Thoughts:

I lost my Flick at hole nine which just rubbed salt in my wounds, so if you find please call the number on it and if you are one of those dishonest people who takes what does not belong to them just remember "I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my disc go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

Great Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 10, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is in a wonderful park and has a lot of different challenges to it's holes. Some of the holes show great creativity in the use of space, blind drives, and really good use of the thicker woods around the course. Being in South East Louisiana it is great to play a course with some hills and elevation changes. This course uses it's natural setting very well, and really makes the most out of the space.

Cons:

Navigation. Navigation. Navigation. It can not be clearer. There are no signs, no markers. Nothing. The tee boxes are only distinguishable as a worn patch of dirt, and two painted bricks set in the ground that can not be seen unless you are on the tee box. There is no info on the hole about where the basket is (which is great on blind drives). Also there are a few holes which it is unclear as to which basket you are suppose to be playing to. To be fair it did seem on a few holes like there used to be signs, but on pole was tipped over, cement base and all, and others had nothing around it. It was also often unclear where the next hole was. On my second trip I was playing with a limited amount of time to play (2.5 hours) and ended up only playing 7 holes before packing it in 30 mins early. 2 hours to play 7 holes. And I had taken the map available on the course page.

The only other con I really have is that some of the long bombs get a bit boring to me. There are a few holes with great design and are nice and challenging, but it feels like the designers had 7 great hole ideas then just filled the rest with long bombs through a field.

Other Thoughts:

I really want to love this course, it is fun to play and the good holes are great. Overall it just isn't enough to be anything more than an okay course. If the navigation issues were cleared up it would be great, but running out before every drive to find the basket, or debating which is the right basket, or not being able to find the next hole! Well it get's old really quickly. That alone really brings this course down.

I will say from experience during the summer this course can be brutal. Go early in the spring and you will love it! Also on one of my rounds, 5 feet in front of the 4th tee some large group set up their tents and were having a party. To me something like that, while it should not be held against the course, speaks of where the course stands in the local area, and may explain why it seemed like all sign-age was missing. Maybe the course has fallen into a certain level of disrepair.

If you can get with a local or some one who knows the course I would say it's a can't miss, but alone for the first time, drive to Flanacer or City Park.

Intermediate/Expert 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set in a large park, mostly on and over a large, flat valley. There is also some forested areas here and there, and a creek that runs through at the bottom of the valley. Seems popular for joggers/walkers, but the park is large enough where it doesn't interfere with the DG. Pro shop on site as well!
- Majority of the holes are set by the valley, so there are good elevation changes in many spots. Mostly downhill or over the valley, with a few uphill shots. There are lots of large trees to provide some challenge, good placement off the tee is key to have a clear approach shot.
- Some other holes have denser forest to contend with, in many different ways. Hole #2 has a thick patch to get over off of the tee; it is crucial to stay clear left, right, and low. Another hole has dense forest at the end of a clear fairway, with a hard right turn into a very tight window.
- Creek comes into play in a few spots, some are very tricky. Hole #2 has water pretty close to the tee, which punishes shots that don't hit the window. Another hole has a large, bushy tree right next to/on top off the creek that can snag errant drives and drop them in. Definitely in play in a big way.
- Decent variety of shots needed, both in the forest and out of it. The mature trees here are very large, and definitely force line shaping off the tee and on approaches. I felt there was a good balance of left to right in the tighter holes as well. Also a great variety in hole length, from ace-able to monster bomber. Not too many of any kind, which is good for almost any size arm.
- A lot of baskets are well protected by large trees as well as smaller ones. The large trees force good placement to avoid getting stuck behind a wall of trunks, and smaller trees create tight windows to get through to the basket. A couple of sloped greens add good challenge as well.
- Good baskets, tees are still flat and in good shape. Signage is almost non-existent; only a few tee signs remain. Navigation is a nightmare, with no tee signs or helpful directions, I don't know how you would ever know which hole is which. Very bad.

Cons:

- Some of the holes in the open are pretty straightforward, there might be some trees near the basket to worry about, or one or two large trees in the fairway, but there is a lot of leeway for even the worst shanks out here. Can be easy to recover from any shot at times.
- The tougher holes can be the shortest holes, which means there are no real par 4's to be found, maybe 1 or 2. Length can be the biggest obstacle in scoring well out here, and even then, it is possible to score very well without too much skill. More of a fun course than a tough one.
- The signage here is sorely, sorely missed, especially since it had to be redesigned to accommodate more tennis courts. Good luck without a guide.

Other Thoughts:

- This course has a very high amount of fun holes. The long downhill drives over and into the valley are a joy to watch, especially when hitting the line just right. The shorter, technical holes have good lines to the baskets as well, and usually are well protected, and are definitely not gimmees. Very high fun factor, with medium difficulty. I think almost any player should enjoy it.

Cons:

It looks like they changed the course layout (tee order) within the last few years, which can be confusing. Also, navigating the course can be tricky if you're not familiar with it, as the tee signs are elusive, if present at all.

Other Thoughts:

The back nine and front nine feel like two completely different courses, which is fun! Have fun on the 18th: as it's a LONG downhill shot with a water hazard at the bottom that only the most ambitious and powerful throwers will clear from the tee.

Pros:

-Nice baskets. Older, but still really good quality.
-Nice rolling hills. So elevation comes into play on several holes.
-Shot variety needed is pretty high.
-Nice restrooms in the tennis center.
-Fairly well maintained course.
-Multiple tee locations.

Cons:

-Tees. They are natural so they can get slick and messy after rain.
-Signage. There are little to no signs. There are no distances or holes numbers posted on any of the tees.
- Course layout. The course weaves over itself in many spots. Some fairways are shared. Several tees are too close to other baskets. On a busy day, the speed of course play is very, very slow.
-Hole 9. It plays by throwing over the corner of a rugby field. There was a rugby game going on the day I played the course, so the TD had to move hole 9.

Other Thoughts:

The course is fairly well maintained with beaten paths on many of the common areas. The park is very nice and has much to offer besides disc golf. It has playgrounds, soccer fields, rugby fields, tennis courts, a basketball gym, and nice bathrooms with showers in the tennis center.

The course layout just takes away so much from this course in my opinion. I played in a busy tourney and I had to hear "fore" or "heads up" about 20+ times over the course of two rounds. That's just not good. Each individual hole is pretty nice, but the way they coordinate with each other is not good. The lack of some type of tee (concrete, rubber, gravel, sand, something), takes away from the course too. I would like to see some hole distances posted.

A Practice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

An open course, great for practicing with drivers (or midranges for pros). There's decent variation in length and both right- and left-handed bends in holes, nothing too severe. A small creek takes discs on 7 and 18, but the water is only waist deep.

Cons:

The land the park is on does not drain well. The course will stay muddy during the winter. The teepads probably started off as grass but are worn dirt spots which are usually puddles after a rain. The hole signs are mostly destroyed/missing so grab a map from the tennis pro shop if you've never played. Once you've played it becomes pretty easy to figure out where to go next.

Other Thoughts:

The expansion of the Tennis Courts last summer took out holes 13 and 14. You now have to play 12, then #s 15-18 (as 13-16) then "A" as 17 then "B" as 18. There are no signs for these new holes.

To get to A - From 18's basket walk back towards the creek that cuts through 18's fairway. Cross underneath the huge tree - the tees are two spraypainted bricks, and the basket is visible behind the large tree (face away from the creek, hole 4's basket will be on your left as you stand on the tee).

Hole B - from A's basket walk towards the hedges (on your left if you're facing the soccer/baseball fields). Again a set of spraypainted bricks marks the box. Hole B plays back across the creek and the basket is protected by a tree and its overhanging branches. After that you will be right next to Tee #1.

*Hole 5 basket has been replaced, I'm not sure by who but thanks from a local!*

*The pro shop has discs sporadically. They order a large shipment then wait until it sells out before ordering more, however their selection is good and their prices are unbeatable*

A great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my favorite course. I play on it pretty often. There are a number of elevation changes. There are also some very long drives, and even ending up in the brush is not always a bad thing b/c there are a lot of trails cut out in the brush to the pins. The building by the parking lot has scorecards, restrooms, drinks, discs, and course maps

Cons:

Can be very difficult to navigate the 1st couple of times. Make sure you grab a map from the clubhouse. Some hurricane damage has not yet been repaired but is in the works for this summer. There are runners on the course from time to time but they are not too bad.

Pros:

This course is in a large park with gentle rolling hills. The layout uses the elevation change and the thick hedge-bush shule well to create a lot of interesting shots. There are 3 sets of sees for different levels of players, with each tee offering different distance challenges as well as actually changing the shot. The tees are placed well to take the few trees and the thick shule into account to force accurate shots in what would otherwise be a long and open course.

The tennis center by the parking lot has bathrooms, water fountains, and discs for sale.

Cons:

There are natural tee pads, which for the most part, work really well, but can become very muddy when it rains. The tee signs do not show distances and are only on the regular (orange) tees.

Navigation is very difficult for first timers, with the long and short tees practically hidden on some holes where the posts have been stolen or broken. The basket for hole 5 was demolished by a tree and has yet to be replaced.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, it was a fun and challenging course to play in a beautiful park. I was shown a lot of the tree damage done that drastically changed several of the shots. Also, it is a difficult course to play for the first time unless you have a guide to show you around. Otherwise, this is a great course to play and enjoy once you know the layout. I would recommend stopping here to play if you are in the area.

My Mother Ship 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This is where it all began for me.Highland has a bit of everything. 1 and 2 have you shooting challenging tee shots through trees. 3 is a blind downhill annie for a possible ace. 4 and 8 are for big arms, but on 8 you've still got to put it through a hole in the trees to the basket. There are some shorter technical holes with blind baskets. Your hams will know there were some really good elevation changes when you're done. A drainage ditch is goodbye disco on 7 and 18 if you are not careful. All in all it has good variety and it requires all of your shots. Its just a fun course. Rec center usually has a good supply of Innova discs for sale, rest room, and drinks. A crisp, fall Saturday morning at Highland with LSU playing football that night is a wonderful day. Tee pads are dirt, but usually OK. #18 is a fine finishing hole, downhill and across the deep ditch to an annie basket shielded by trees. Good parking.

Cons:

Recent hurricanes have ruined #5 basket (not replaced) and cleared out a lot of trees that made the course more difficult. BREC has plans to redo the course, and I am not thrilled with the proposal, but that is yet to come. My biggest con is the amount of cross country training for schools done here in the Fall. The runners, for the most part, have no courtesy. They don't stop for your throw and they don't want to move when they are standing in your way. I've had to putt with shirts hanging on baskets. The tees could be marked better for those who are looking for the Pro and Beginner tees.

Other Thoughts:

The course has been tougher before the hurricanes, but I do not think you will regret playing this course. It is fun. Big arms will love Highland, but better than average technical disc golfers will score.
