Hyland DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 hole layout
Concrete tees and tee signs on all holes
Great mix of shots
Elevation changes
Well maintained
Pro shop/cafe on-site
Walking/hiking trails around the course
A fun little nine hole course on-site and other great courses nearby

Cons:

Tee signs could be updated
Lots of elevation changes
Quite a few man-made obstacles
Walkers/hikers can get in the way

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course beautifully constructed on a ski hill. The course has a great mix of long, open holes and tight, wooded holes. There are concrete tees and signs on all the holes and a few have multiple tee and pin positions. The tee signs could be more descriptive, as they're pretty generic and don't really give a good feel for the lay of the hole, but all in all not bad.
Pretty much all the holes have some sort of elevation changes, offering up a nice challenge. Most of the holes are pretty wide open but with the elevation changes, roll-aways can be punishing. The wooded holes are tight and the woods can get thick. There are a decent amount of man-made obstacles that come into play on the open holes. Ski lifts, snow machines, etc., but rather than being an inconvenience they just add a bit more of a challenge.
The mix of open and wooded holes is great and all the elevation changes makes this course a bit of a workout. There are some O.B. chances with the walking trails. Most of the walking trails are gravel or dirt, so they can be played as in or out depending on the players choice. If played with all trails O.B., this course is quite difficult. Walkers and hikers can occasionally cross fairways, but it's not a very big concern for the most part.
There is a small pro shop and cafe in the ski chalet. The course is pay to play, at $5 a day, but well worth it. There is also a small 9 hole course built on the same ski hill, it's mostly just a pitch an putt but a nice contrast to the big 18.
This course is lots of fun, and with the 9 hole course, walking trails, and other amenities has a very high replay value. The elevation changes will give a nice leg workout, but the enjoyment of the layout far out-weigh the strain.

Relief course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 6, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hyland is a course on a ski hill- very hilly with a variety of holes on varying relief- some wooded, but most open. This is a strenuous course with a lot of uphill and downhill shots. You will probably need at least a 400ft drive in order to score under the posted par- there are multiple holes of 400 ft par 3s.

Elevation plays into almost every hole. And you have to think about your shot selection to avoid your disc rolling. #14 is a 545' extreme uphill hole-I would think you need at least a 450' drive (on level ground) to get a three on this hole. On some holes (#2, #5, #9, #10) unique obstacles must be factored in- the ski lift equipment and cables come into play.

Signature holes:
#18- 710 ft extreme downhill hole.

Varying relief-
The ski hill is utilized well in the course design, and presents an opportunity to throw uphill and downhill shots that other courses do not offer.

Good mix of holes-
You will be required to throw a variety of shots- I threw about five thumbers on this course and threw almost all of my key discs.

Vistas-
There are a couple great views of the surrounding city from atop the hill.

Tee pads-
The tee pads are large, grippy and level.

Cons:

Some of the lines are difficult to hit, and if you are off, your disc will go into the thick woods, making it very difficult to find-especially hole #16.

It isn't obvious where to go after some holes, so grab a course map if you're playing the course for the first couple times.

This one gets you in shape 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

To start, it's a pay to play but worth it. It's clean and maintained very well. They do a nice job using the slopes and going around the permanent ski equipment. The chalet is really nice to have there. Get a drink/food and rent and buy a disc.
The full 18 can kick your butt. Up hill, downhill to the left & right, wide open and tunneling shots.
The fatigue factor is high and can drain you. Bring plenty of fluids to keep you going or break in the chalet after the first 9 going back out to the back nine. The up and down of the final 9 is the brutal part and is really fun to unload on 18.

Cons:

It is a combination ski in winter and disc in summer so the hills are fairly open which makes it a bit to wide open sometimes but not really that bad. 3&4 are a little tricky walking.

Other Thoughts:

Go play it this summer!

The Last of Three River Courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is very well maintained and has a variety of challenging holes. Like every other Three Rivers course, the tee pads are in great condition and there are quality signs for distance and navigation. There are plenty of holes out in the open, both up, down, and across the ski hills. The elevation change and length of this course certainly makes it very interesting to play. Holes 2, 10, 13, 14, and 15 all play uphill. Hole 10 is one of the toughest holes up the hill and into the woods, with a deep pin location. Downhill shots on 11, 16, and 18. There are also several holes in the woods that offer a nice change of pace. Make sure you stay in the fairway on 6, otherwise you'll end up with some very tough shots out of the woods/brush. Lastly, there are also several roll away pins, including Holes 2, 7, 10, 11, and 13.

Cons:

The course is not as well maintained as Bryant Lake and Elm Creek and is lacking some of the nice landscaping and erosion control that both of those courses offer. Some of the holes in the woods, like hole 6, could also use some brush trimming to create better shooting lanes. Also, some of the holes playing out in the open are somewhat boring and lack very few obstacles to contend with.

Other Thoughts:

Be ready to walk a lot! Hole 16 and 18 have awesome views of the Minneapolis skyline from the top of the hill. The length, elevation changes, and roll-away pins, really make Hyland a challenging course. Overall, the course is the most challenging of the 3 Three Rivers Park District courses and is definitely worth a look, especially if you have a season pass.

Big dissapointment 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is very well maintained. The grass is short and green. The tees are nice too. They all have proper signage and the sign shows the line and distance for each hole. The cement tee pads are good size. Most holes have a bench to rest on as well. Hole 18 is a fun 700ft + toss down a big hill!

Cons:

It seems like the course was an afterthought, which is fine, but its not worth $ to play. Most of the shots are boring short throws with no obstacles. The only long shots are uphill for some reason (except 18). And I mean long up hill holes. Some around 600 ft. I'm not a fan of the openness of it all. There are only 2 holes that play through the woods, and one of them is about 10 feet long (exaggeration).

Other Thoughts:

If this was a free course a couple blocks from my home I would play it a few times a year when bored. But to drive out of the city and pay to play again would be absured. For the most part it is a very boring course (except for the views). When its not boring its impossibly uphill. Hole 18 was fun and I unloaded my bag on it. Besides the novelty of playing under ski lifts, this course is just not worth it.

Intermediate/Expert 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set on the side of a large hill that doubles as a downhill ski area in the winter. Also a popular spot for hiking and cross-training, but people seem to be aware. Shouldn't be any major interference.
- The large hillside is used very well here on many holes, in many different ways. There are some of the more wide open shots, like a slight uphill on #1, across the hill on #2, a fun little donwhill on #9, an uphill valley shot on #12, a very steep uphill on #14, another steep uphill on #17, and a very downhill bomber on #18. For the most part, these holes are quite open, but are still either very tough or very fun based on the slope.
- Some other holes have a combination of sloping land and woods, to add to the fun. #3 is a steep uphill with woods on the right, #5 is on top of the hill with a slight uphill, and a long basket position that is around and past a clump of woods on another hilltop. #7 is a little downhill shot with some trees behind and right, #8 is a blind anny around some nasty woods, #10 is an uphill shot with a long pin position even more up and deep in the woods (tough location). #11 is a downhill hyzer with the basket in the woods, all of these holes need good accuracy to reach the basket.
- A few more holes are in thicker woods, with much tighter lines. #6 is a wooded RHBh flex shot, slightly downhill, that has a tight hyzer finish down into some woods. #15 is a downhill hyzer into a small gap, and #16 is a very tight, pretty steep downhill hyzer through an even smaller window. These holes will severely punish an errant shot, but are fun if you make the line!
- Some very precarious basket locations, due to the sloping terrain as well as some placements inside the woods. Landing in the right spot, and at the right angle, is very important to avoid racking up strokes.
- Nice pads, signs, and baskets. Wind flags on baskets as well. Navigation is pretty straightforward, except for the little backtracks to get to #6 and #14. The map is helpful the first time through. Practice basket is kind of hidden behind the lodge.

Cons:

- Some of the holes are wide open, so distance and grade is the only real challenge here. It is still fun, but not super exciting.
- There are a lot of man-made pieces of equipment to avoid, such as ski lifts, light posts, and other typical ski slope items. Not a big deal, definitely nit-picking with that.
- Might be a little hyzer heavy, with a few anny lines on the shorter holes.

Other Thoughts:

- This is a very fun course! A good balance of open and wooded holes, long and short, with elevation changes to spare. There's uphill and downhill bombers, uphill and downhill birdie chances, some very tight wooded holes and some nasty rough to deal with. Might be a bit much for beginners, but maybe not. Everyone else should definitely enjoy a round here.

Love this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long arms will have an advantage here. The course is relatively open, except # 4 and #6. It is nice that it's a pay to play, which keeps the traffic down. The clubhouse sells dics, food and has a great beer selection. The elevation changes and mixture of short, long and very long holes, keeps it interesting everytime.

Cons:

Don't really have any except, #14 is such a long uphill hole. It's not a negative, just can wear somebody out.

Other Thoughts:

Get the season pass, it will pay for itself (especially if you play Elm Creek and Bryant Lake). The guys in the clubhouse are helpful and very friendly.
2 Things: 1) When playing #18, a 720' downhill hole, empty the bag and let em' fly!
2) After a round, I like to get a cold beverage and play "pig" at the practice basket. A great way to unwind and also practice your putting. Good luck and have fun!

Hyland is great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It is a great course to start.
The maps are great areal view to help out instead of the drawings most have.
The clubhouse is wonderful to get food and drink, before, during and after your round(s).
The pay to play is great as it keeps this clean and well maintained with benches in the area and really no trash to speak of.
Everyone from the golfers, to us disc golfers and the runners are all very careful of each other and friendly.
Good mix of elevation and wooded tunnel shots.
Most of the holes are open holes but do require shot placement and different techniques which I like as you can work on your drives and big shot placement. The shorter tunnel shots are wonderfully designed and give you an extra level of technique usage.
The tee boxes are concrete and have great length on them as some of holes need some power on them.
The scorecards are very nice and area a great feature.
Wind flags are very nice and help your shot decision helps your shot as well as see the baskets.

Cons:

The holes could use some next tee pins/arrows from the baskets to the next pin.

Be prepared to walk up and down but you should expect this as it's a ski resort.

I would like a water hole, but I understand why there isn't one.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice, clean, and enjoyable with other activities in the area. get the season pass...you'll be back!

Fun elevation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays on a ski hill, with elevation as the major factor on many holes. Most holes play on the ski runs, with tree lines and ski lifts coming into play as obstacles. A handful of holes play more technical with more trees and brush in play forcing you to hit tighter lines. You'll really need to focus on shot placement here, with rollaway potential on most holes and a dearth of flat landing zones. There is an excellent mix of uphill and downhill holes, along with some tricky shots across the slopes where it's easy to fade or roll down the hill if your shot doesn't do exactly what you intend. The finishing hole is an excellent top of the world shot: open enough to air it out but a few obstacles to keep you honest including a tree line to the left where RHBH shots could potentially fade out. On a day where the course isn't crowded you'll definitely want to empty your bag.

I was pleasantly surprised by the conditions here. Most ski hill courses end up overgrown, this one was nicely mowed and the wooded areas were fairly clear of brush and dead sticks etc. on the fairways. There are nice roomy concrete pads, another big plus you don't often see on this type of course. The chalet has nice bathrooms, and you can get snacks, discs and drinks at the little shop inside. The course loops back to the bottom halfway through.

Cons:

Navigation is an issue at times, even with the course map provided at the ski shop. There are some long walks that aren't really obvious, a handful of next tee signs would go a long way. The tee signs aren't always that descriptive, you might have to walk ahead to look at the few blind shots.

I love elevation shots, but as fun as they are this course still gets a bit repetitive. Too many of the holes are pretty open, a few more shots in the wooded areas of the property would make it a much more well rounded course.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners can have a good time here, but it'll be a long day. There is a good amount of distance, and the wooded holes have enough brush to really punish errant shots. Inaccurate throwers will end up with long comeback shots on the big hills. More experienced players will find some fun shot placement challenges, and the wind on the open hills will really test disc choice and punish poor execution.

If you're not in great shape or have mobility problems, this course isn't for you. It's a long walk with lots of hills, and you'll often be throwing from awkward stances.

Holy elevation Batman! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Offers elevation changes that you won't find anywhere else in the area if that's your cup of tea.
-One of the longer courses in the Twin Cities, you'll need your power arm on numerous holes.
-There's no denying that hole 18 is just plain and simple fun. 715' down a ski hill, it's delightful fun to empty your bag on that hole just to see how far you can throw it.
-Foliage/trees come into play more than I expected considering it's on a ski hill.
-You'll get in really good shape in no time playing this course
-Good scorecard with a map that you'll get with your $3 fee
-Nice, long concrete tee pads that are in good shape
-Signs have all the necessary information on them at each tee

Cons:

-The elevation changes gets to be a bit tiresome by the end of a round
-If you're not physically fit, don't bother coming here. You will be absolutely gassed by the end of a round.
-The flow from hole to hole is questionable at best between some of the holes, despite having a map on the back of the scorecard I still had to wander around to find the next tee pad on several occasions.
-The course could be a little more compact to reduce walking between the holes, or more holes could be added as there is definitely more real estate that could be used. There is easily enough available area to make this at least a 27 holer.
-It's a little confusing on several holes on the front 9 as to where the basket is located; it might be necessary to walk a few of the holes prior to teeing off to see how to shape your shot appropriately.

Other Thoughts:

First off, this course is pretty brutal to walk. Keep this in mind when preparing to come here. You'll want to wear good shoes to walk in and while you're at it you should probably pack some bug spray as well as there were some gnats that got annoying near the woods. The course seems like it would be tough because of the extreme elevation changes, but it really isn't all the difficult; you can get a decent score here. Hole #14 is pretty ridiculous, it's 545' straight uphill. That being said, it's a par 5 and is definitely a hole that you can birdie. Hole #18 is a truly epic hole; 710' straight down the ski hill. This hole is just plain fun; unload your bag (if no one is behind you) and just bomb drive after drive down the hill.
The only facilities on the course are at ski chalet where there are drinks (both alcoholic and otherwise), snacks, and a pro shop (that only has discs for sale). It really only makes sense to get to the chalet before starting and after hole #9, so keep that in mind.
By this point I probably sound like a broken record, but this course provides something that I haven't really seen on any other course in the area; extreme elevation changes. It really adds a different element to disc golf and a lot of courses don't have it. If that isn't your cup of tea I'd still at least pay a visit to this course once, it is a nice course.

A More Gentle Ski Hill Disc Golf Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Compared to the higher, more rugged, more mountainous, disc golf courses on ski slopes that I've played in the western US, Hyland is just a touch more gentle. Granted it's still a workout but this course was groomed. I really liked that aspect. Even on # 18 here, with an errant throw, you could still par the hole. I liked the cleverly constructed benches made out of out snowboards. The scorecards are top notch. Other ski courses I've played have had rough natural pads, here you have great, extra-long, grippy concrete pads. Also the entire course here is much more groomed/mowed then other ski courses I've played. Made for a much more comfortable round.

The costs $3 per round, or $5 per day for all day or $30 for a season's pass for all three courses is a very fair deal when you consider and see all the work that is done on these three courses.
There are some great views of downtown Minneapolis from the top.

And # 18 was indeed the signature hole here for me. 710 feet downhill with the basket just sitting down there awaiting your tee off. What I wouldn't give to have a big arm here.

Cons:

I didn't care much for # 14. 545' straight up a nasty steep hill is not fun and borders on tortuous to me.
Physically, this is a good workout. You're plenty tired by the end. Bring water.
I never like throwing down or over gravel roads and pathways.
I had to walk ahead on quite a few holes to determine where the basket was.

Other Thoughts:

I liked Hyland OK but wasn't completely thrilled with it. It just didn't take my breath away with it's design. It's an enjoyable course but it's missing that "It" factor for me. It's a good deal with the other two courses for the Three Rivers Pass. You gotta love the effort their putting into disc golf around the area.

Cons:

Other Thoughts:

I would definitely recomend this course. It is alot of fun throwing down the hill. I do suggest you be in descent shape before playing the course. It will wear you down fast if your out of shape. Also, give yourself the time to play at a casual pace.
It is fairly open on the majority of the course. It allows you to really work the shot you want without much regard for hitting trees. The few holes through the trees have good sized fairways which require good shot shaping to score well. If you can throw 350' on flat ground you will be able to reach most of the holes in one throw. Roll-aways and huge skips are big factors.
Front 9 is a little shorter so attack it hard and get your 2s. The back 9 gets considerably longer. Hole 14 is a butt-kicker, its steep, uphill, and long. Get your 2s and 3s where you can on the back and try to take as little damage as possible on 14 and 17. Hole 18 is a blast to unload your bag if no one is waiting on you.

Pros:

The Country Club oh how I love thee.
1- I'm a big fan of elevation change, and there is nair a hole that doesn't satisfy or provide over satisfaction. A constant variety of short ups and long downs, short downs and looooong uphills.
2- Great layout with a relatively equal amount of shots that favor RHBH and LHBH.
3-Signature holes, 18 big bomb down hill, 14 big bomb up hill
4-Everything about the course is kept in really good condition. The pins are in great condition, most pins have chips in the "green" area. A lot of the pads have benches which come in really useful after some of the uphills
5- There is never anyone here. Where the country club name comes from, it's hardly ever busy, a great place to go after work and not have to worry about getting the round in.
6- Beer at the pro-shop is reasonably priced! Say you get done throwing a round in 85 degree july heat and are looking to throw another, but are most likely a bit tired, stop in for a 3.75 anchor steam and relax for a drink or two.

Cons:

1- Through no fault of the layout, the course is relatively open. They do a great job incorporating the trees that are around, but to get the 5 ranking in my book there has to be a few more technical wooded shots for me to double-boggy.

Other Thoughts:

I would suggest playing the extra hole between 6-7 in the woods on the left if it's in, which it was for most of last season. A challenging hole in the woods, which is really what this course needs.
Also, don't let your friends complain about "how 14 sucks and you just throw up hill" which is true on both statements, because as tiring and frustrating of a hole as it is, it's really unique for the region.
