Excellent Terrain, Fun Holes, Some Issues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is built on an interesting tract of land that includes tall mountain forest, open meadow, a deep bisecting creek, and rolling terrain. A great combination for disc golf.

The holes lengths vary nicely from 194' to 478', with a selection of flat, uphill and downhill holes. Hole 8 is a fun downhill toss to a basket set across the creek. Hole 16 stands out as playing steeply uphill, with Hole 17 playing back down.

Many of the holes play through the forest with gaps to hit and lines to shape. But a few play across more open ground and allow you to air it out a bit.

Baskets are in good shape, and show up reasonably well. There are a few tricky basket locations next to the creek or on slopes or mounds.

Cons:

Natural teepads and lack of tee signs are the biggest negative. There is a post at each teepad with the hole number, but that is all. Many of the baskets are blind from the tee, and a hole diagram would be useful to help you figure out the hole. As it is you will be walking forward on quite a few holes to determine the location of the basket.

The area has been left natural, which is not a bad thing, but especially in the open areas you will be throwing into tall grass, so keep on eye on where your disc lands.

The tract of land with the disc golf course also includes some other utility/industrial installations for the Inn. So you will encounter fencing, pipeline, discarded equipment, and on one hole huge piles of broken up concrete with rebar. The course would benefit from some cleaning up but it appears that this is a multi-use area so that might not happen, or could even get worse. Once an area starts getting used as a dump it is seldom reversed.

Other Thoughts:

The disc golf holes themselves are very good, but the overall experience suffers from the lack of teepads/signs and poor overall maintenance.

Fun, with Unfulfilled Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great piece of property, with pine trees throughout, elevation changes, and a creek running though.

Descriptive and helpful course map at the parking area.

Discatcher baskets, in great shape. Several interesting and creative pin placements that add interest and challenge to the holes.

Good mixture of long and short hole distances.

Fun "top of the world-ish" shot on hole 17.

Cons:

No tee signs, just numbered wooden stakes. No "next tee" or other directional signs, that I saw. Navigation is a problem without a photo of the previously-mentioned course map.

Natural tees that were muddy ruts when I played. There may have been gravel there at one time, but there is only a little evidence of it. Dangerous footing around most tee areas.

Fairways have not been maintained and lack of tree trimming has eliminated intended lines on several holes. One fairway is full of broken concrete with exposed rebar that I assume was dumped into the middle of the fairway after the course existed by people who do not understand disc golf.

Other Thoughts:

I have rarely played a course with more unfulfilled potential than this one. I really enjoyed my time on this property. There is traffic noise from the nearby highway on the first few holes, but the place feels remote, with horses roaming the fairways and trees providing beauty and shade. The course flows well and the variety of holes is good. With concrete tees, good signage, and some tree trimming, this would leap from 3 to 4 discs immediately. With those concerns addressed, it would compare favorably to the other big courses in Ruidoso.

Note: The GPS coordinates on the site are wrong, but I don't know how to adjust them. It took me to a spot maybe ½ a mile farther down the road. Fortunately, I had seen a basket on the right and I backtracked to find the parking area.

Great design but needs improvement 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is in a fairly mountainous and woody area, the tee and pin placements utilize the terrain very well. There are mostly wooded holes with nice gaps and fairways. There are a few wide open holes (approx. 425 ft to pin) with nice scenery. Hole #17 is really cool with a 50+ foot drop to the basket. There is a practice/putting basket at the entrance to the course with a fairly large (approx. 1.5 acre) open area for setting up a table for an event or driving practice.

Cons:

The course is new and needs a lot of trimming of trees and clearing of rocks and trees before the course is ready for all players. A few holes are quite dangerous (steep drop offs and lose, rocky footing). I wouldn't recommend for beginners, definitely not a pro level course but requires experienced players to hit tight gaps and "in-shape" players to safely navigate the terrain.
