Decent Park Course Right on the Edge of the United States

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- concrete tees
- well manicured park
- good mix of open shots and more technical wooded shots
- respectable 12 holes well designed into a smaller park
- good flow and very straightforward navigation
- high quality MVP Portal baskets
- virtually no rough to lose discs in
- basic park amenities including port o potty, garbage cans, picnic tables
- good technical challenge in the woods

Cons:

- tee signs have no maps and are very basic
- entirely flat
- can be quite muddy in places
- fenced off area to the left of holes 10 and 11 is a high risk for losing discs
- some holes start to feel rather repetitive
- hole 8 throws straight at swingset - only notable safety hazard
- long walk to backtrack between holes 9 and 10

Other Thoughts:

I stopped by Jake Simpson Park just before crossing into Canada. It is only 15-20 minutes from the border. This is a nice enough park that doesn't necessarily have a huge "wow" factor. For a course with less than 18 holes, the difficulty factor is pretty good here. It isn't incredibly difficult but the wooded holes would probably give beginners some trouble.

Realistically, this course is probably no higher than a 2. With the technical wooded shots and generally being a nice park I was tempted to go up to 2.5, but the course is lacking any sort of elevation change and is a bit repetitive in a really small space. It's fun, but just not that special. This course supposedly has dual tees but they are not clearly marked. The concrete tees and MVP baskets are very nice, with the tee signs being fine but lacking maps. Otherwise the park is about what you'd expect for a well maintained city park. Some woodchips around baskets and in other muddy areas would be a big improvement.

Holes 1-3 and 11-12 are out in the open, while 4-10 mostly play through a more technical wooded area. Obstacles are notable here and it provides good challenge. The lengths on the holes here are mostly a friendly but non-trivial 250-300 ft with a few outliers. Some of the holes do seem a bit repetitive but it's generally a pretty quick, fun round. The biggest cons here are the throw towards the swingset on hole 8 - though the park was deserted when I visited on a Wednesday afternoon, it was during school hours so this wasn't very surprising, and this is a pretty bad design for safety. On holes 10 and 11, you throw all along a fenced off private property area. If your disc goes over this fence, the only way you are getting it back is to climb an 8 ft+ chain link fence and trespass. This is definitely not ideal and it would be nice if the fairways played a bit further from the fence. I enjoy a challenge but nobody wants to lose a disc too easily.

Overall, this is a fun casual round in a park I doubt ever gets busy. It's a quick stop off the highway if you are headed through Port Huron, but nothing I'd go out of my way for.
