Where'd these hills come from? Is this still Wichita?

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety of openness on shots 10/10 - Great mix of open and wooded, and it's spread throughout the course better than most that have both. There are also a couple holes where part of the hole is very technical, and part of it is mostly open. For example, hole 3 has a very tight uphill tunnel shot for the first 250' then opens up for the last 200'.

Decisionmaking required 10/10, Use of obstacles 10/10 - Great course design. The wooded holes are good about providing multiple viable routes that force players to choose. But even the more open holes might only have one or two obstacles, but really make you think about which side to go around them. Hole 1 is a perfect example of this. Off the tee you can go up the gut, low right under the branches, or spike hyzer off the tee, and then are forced to throw around a large tree about 30 feet short of the basket on your approach. There are also holes that force you to think more about placement off the tee than getting as close to the basket as possible, namely hole 6, which is a very sharp dogleg right after about 150' across a creek.

Variety of distances 10/10 - This course has a great mix of distances, with several holes in the 200'-250' range, but also several over 500'. It's par 60 at ~6,400ft. All of the Par 4's are pretty manageable, it's nice seeing some par 4's where you can throw a couple of great 250' shots through the woods and make birdie. I feel some courses just base things off distances and say "Oh, a 400' hole? Must be a Par 3" even when there's no realistic route to get anywhere near the basket in 1.

Condition of Baskets, tees 10/10 - Baskets were great, tees were a stone tile that provided very good footing. I'm curious to see how these hold up over the years.

Course maintenance 10/10 - This is a brand new course, and it's clear a lot of work has been put in and is still being put in. I was very impressed by how clear the fairways were in the wooded areas. A lot of new wooded courses will have brush piles from trees that were trimmed/removed, or shin high weeds throughout the fairways, but not this one. Mulch around all tees and baskets, and in some spots along the fairways to prevent erosion.

Variety of shot paths 9/10 - There is a great mix of needing to throw different shot paths to have success. There are also holes that need something more complex than just right-to-left or left-to-right, especially in the middle section of the course. The only reason this isn't a 10 for me, is it felt like every short more open hole favored a left-to-right shot, and none of them were right-to-left. Holes 6, 13, and 16 were all relatively open with a gentle left-to-right. The other short holes were very heavily wooded tunnel shots.

Amount/Use of elevation present 9/10 - For central Kansas, this is as good as it gets in terms of elevation. There are several holes with extreme elevation changes, and others with more gentle slopes or nuanced features. The only reason I'm not giving this a 10 is there IS a stretch from the fairway on hole 6 through 10 that is typical Wichita, where your elevation changes by probably less than 2 feet total.

Navigation on the actual holes 9/10 - Most holes can be seen from the tee, and the tee signs are reasonably helpful at directing you. Hole 17 has one of the tallest flag poles I've seen on a disc golf basket to help you orient yourself from the tee.

How easy it is to find discs 7/10 - Being a new course, there are a few spots that are still pretty densely wooded, though I would expect this to get better as more time passes. There are also a few spots where a shot that barely misses could wind up way down a hill. Plan to spend some time searching, but overall you shouldn't lose too many here.

Reasonably challenging all levels 6/10 - This is a championship caliber course, and is made for competitive disc
golfers. Even the best players will be challenged on many holes. That said, it is definitely not a course you want to bring a beginner to. Lots of technical shots and lots of punishment for going off the fairway. I'd like to see alternate short tee pads go in once the course is more established to make the course more enjoyable for all disc golfers.

Cons:

Quality of Alternate hole positions 3/10 - This judgement may be premature, as I've only played this course once so far, but it seemed like at the moment a lot of holes only had one placement, and the ones that did have alternates didn't seem to change the shot a whole lot.

Navigation between holes 5/10 - The course was generally intuitive to follow, but there were a few tricky spots. I'd like to see some kind of indication around the basket, or more signage (or even just arrows on the tee sign pointing toward the next hole).

Overall comfort level while playing 5/10 - The main knock (no pun intended) I have here is some of the paths on the steep slopes were pretty dangerous, and would be especially so after rain. Definitely not a good course for carts. A good amount of shade, bag holders on each tee. There are a few stumps to sit on in places, would like to see some benches and maybe a water fountain added at some point.

Other Thoughts:

More Precise Rating: 4.295
Overall challenge of the course 9/10

This is a very fun and challenging course, and a great addition. It is easily my favorite course in the Wichita area, none of the others provide the level of variety that this course does. Pretty much all of my nitpicks about this course are things that could be addressed in the future (alternate pins/tees, signage, benches) and potentially bring this course up to a 5 rating from me.

It is pay to play, but entry is per vehicle, so grab as many friends as you can stuff in your car and give this course a try.
