2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Variety. Good mix of hyzers and anhyzers. Modest+ elevation changes. Water holes are interesting (really 3 holes have water hazards, with an errant tree bounce). All baskets are professional; great field for warming up; practice basket.

Cons:

Poison oak everywhere. We were vigilant, though and didn't get into any. Signage is present, but not very helpful (tee maps, in particular). The last two holes are huge, but for the most part these are 230ft-375ft long holes that big arms might find boring. That wasn't really an issue for me, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Other Thoughts:

Parking is apparently $5, not the $2 in the description. We paid it, but there are a few spots out on the road in that a few locals were taking advantage of. I gave this course a 2.5, but I really liked it. A friend and I were camping in the area and played a couple of times and had a great time.

A bit repetitive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course mostly plays through woods with shorter technical shots, with a couple longer open holes to finish the round. The trees are dense enough to make the fairways nicely defined, and despite the lack of brush you still have to work to recover from an errant shot. A couple holes make you shape some different and interesting lines, a solid mid and putter game is a must to score well on the first 16 holes.

The last couple holes offer a nice chance to open up and throw some longer drives. One hole also offers a bit of a water carry that offers an easy bail out or a trickier shot that risks ob if you go for the birdie. I appreciated the addition of a short tee that took the water out of play to make the hole playable for newer throwers. A little elevation is in play, nothing major but enough to add a little more variety. The course was mostly pretty easy to navigate even without a map or guide, and the signage was entirely adequate.

Cons:

A lot of the holes are simple straight shots with a basket barely tucked to the right or left at the end. Because so many of the holes are similar lengths that makes the course feel a bit repetitive. It's tricky to find your way from 9 to 10, a couple directional signs would go a long way there. The last two holes are a bit odd compared to the rest of the course, it was a bit jarring to have two wide open bombs after all the short technical wooded holes.

Poison oak is everywhere in this park, including on some of the fairways and around several tees. If you're sensitive to urushiol make sure to wear long pants and long sleeves here, it's pretty impossible to avoid.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course interesting but not frustratingly tough. It's not a disc eater and the lengths are reasonable while still providing enough obstacles to make newer players use some different shots. Experienced players will find some nice challenges for their mid and putter game, but it's definitely not a course that will really test the full skill set of most better players.
