Fun Course for all Experience Levels drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun, some challenging holes, nice scenery, great layout

Cons:

Shorter course to some but great if you want to burn some time

Other Thoughts:

I think that this course is a lot of fun. The holes are challenging enough for our group, and there aren't tons of insects or spots where you'll lose your disc.

Overall it has always been a blast to play here!

Nothing special, but another nice addition to the Marquette area scene

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lake Superior Christian Church is not located on the lake, but rather a few miles from it and just south of Marquette, MI. A 9-hole DGC was recently installed around the edges of the property.

Overall, there is a decent mix of holes here. The first three holes play in a large area between the parking lot and road, and are each fairly open with a couple of old growth trees to work around. Holes 4-6 and 8-9 have tighter fairways carved into wooded areas next to and behind the church. The remaining hole 7 is pretty much wide open, with just a couple of trees guarding the basket. The hole distances range from 183' to 328', so nothing too lengthy but not laughably easy either. This course will provide a fine challenge for rec level players.

The most unique holes on this course are a couple of the wooded ones. Hole 5 has two distinct fairways that curl to the left and right (so a backhand or forehand line with a thick stand of trees in the middle). The fairways reconnect for the approach to the basket, which curls to the right. This makes a tricky hole for RHBH throwers who are likely to choose the left turning line - if they don't make it into the approach area, it will be tricky to salvage par (I didn't). Right after that, hole 6 has a fairway that starts as kind of an S shape then curls back around on itself. The overall shape is kind of like a reverse question mark. The distance is only listed as 300', but I think the given par of 4 is fair.

The baskets are standard yellow banded DISCatchers in like-new condition.

Cons:

The other course infrastructure is okay (especially considering that this course is still very new), but it would benefit from a little more polish. The tee pads are patio paver arrays, but they could use some frames around them to prevent the paver stones from shifting. Some of them were already a little bit shifted and uneven when I visited in early October 2022. Similarly, the tee signs are nice and have all the required info - but they appear to be poorly laminated onto the backing material and a couple of them were already peeling off when I visited. The course is mostly pretty easy to navigate, but there aren't any navigational aids and it does get tricky in a couple spots. The most confusing spot for me was after hole 7, where you have to kind of double back into the woods to find #8. "Next Tee" stickers on the basket bands would go a long way here.

The course is more or less flat, with no water in play. There is nothing here to really challenge advanced players.

The parking lot is in play on hole 1 (although it is signed as OB).

There aren't any extras like practice basket, kiosk, benches, porta potty, etc.

Other Thoughts:

A sign after hole 9 indicates that the church is planning on adding a back nine in the future. Until then, it's a longish walk back to your car after the round.

Due to a miscalculation on my part (and unwillingness to worry about addressing the miscalculation when I realized it nine days into my eleven day course bagging trip), this ended up being my 150th course played. So I will remember it for that reason.

Lake Superior Christian Church DGC is fine. It doesn't have any glaring issues, but also isn't particularly interesting or memorable. It is a nice addition to the Marquette disc golf scene, which in my opinion is overall becoming downright destination worthy. If/when the back nine is added here, I will probably return to check that out and update this review. Until then, I see myself choosing one of the several other superior courses in the area to play at when I visit.
