Update in progress, still needs some work

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-DGA Mach Xs in good condition
-Good use of available space
-Good use of elevation
-Can see the future improvements will make this a great course, but they aren't finished yet
-Concrete tee pads on the front 9
-Multiple pin positions on most holes
-Lots of parking
-Good mix of open and wooded holes

Cons:

-Disposable tee signs that only have hole number and no distance or map are falling apart
-Back 9 don't have concrete tee pads yet, but it is obvious that is coming soon
-The short and long baskets don't have any visible difference from a distance, nor do they have the hole number on them
-I played just after a thaw following some snow and the ground melting, but even then the mud was really bad and the drainage on quite a few holes was really bad. Likely to be part of the improvements, but noteworthy.
-Some of the distances between the basket and next tee are almost ridiculous. One was almost a 1/4 mile and I wouldn't have found it if it wasn't for udisc. Better signage is a must

Other Thoughts:

Looking forward and anticipating future improvements, this course will be very good. It's current limitations are due to the fact it is currently under construction, so by the end of summer 2023 this rating will likely no longer be relevant. Regardless, I really enjoyed playing this course, especially the back 9. The front 9 was mostly open fields asking for hyzers, but the woods in the back 9 demanded shot shaping and precision. If I come through town again, I'll likely stop by to play again to see how this course has grown!

Fun, but could use some maintenance 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Really good use of elevation changes. The course was empty when I played, so it was a nice peaceful walk in the woods. Has some really pretty scenery overlooking the lake. Creative pin placements that not only demand you be in the circle to have a good look, but sometimes even the correct side of the circle.

Cons:

Maintenance is fairly poor. Many holes have no defined fairway, and those that did have one were overgrown. The exception is a few holes that share space with jogging trails, which were recently mowed. Dirt teepads are poorly marked and difficult to find.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of holes finish hard right, which makes me guess that this course was designed by someone that throws RHFH or LHBH. Most holes have ample opportunities to lose a disc so I would not recommend taking beginners here.

Unfulfilled Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course really tests so many different skills. Each basket is a different challenge.

Cons:

I concur with the previous review that the course has unfulfilled potential. I've heard this course is maintained by volunteers, not the city. If so, its remarkable the course is as developed as it is.

Still... a few permanent fixtures (signage, firm pads, full 18) could boost its reputation.

Safari golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I love elevation change, and this course has lots of it. It occupies a beautiful piece of land that feels very Nebraska. Sunset on the lake was gorgeous. There are some shotmaking challenges and length challenges. The ruggedness of the course sometimes adds to the fun. I give it a 3, because even with all its faults, it could be a great course--and it's an adventure compared to the mowed-grass, park courses we see so much of.

Cons:

Once you begin, there is very little indication that you are on a golf course at all. "Links" may be a euphemism for "no fairway." The dense underbrush of grass, bushes, and short trees certainly define this course, both in playability and golf skills required. All you really need is a high anny, hyzer, or overhand to get you over whatever obstacle's in front of you and float for some distance. Then you'll spend 2-10 minutes looking for your disc, which (if placed well or poorly) certainly landed out of view. Then approach with a shorter over-the-top shot, and make a putt. Even if you've played this course 20 times, playing without a spotter will require a solid few hours of battling bugs and brush. I played the B tees. I couldn't see the pin from the tee in 14 cases. Some tees were so surrounded by branches that no golf shot was possible. I just had to find an opening and hope. Some tees were missing entirely. The only way I completed this course was the map I printed (linked from DGCR). It took 2:15 hrs, only because of good throws and a non-playing spotter.

Other Thoughts:

If you love safari golf and the Nebraska wilderness, PRINT THE MAP, and tackle this baby. Until they clear out some serious vegetation, I won't be back.

Fun Course that needs updated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The challenge for me is a pro. Lots of trees and elevation changes make this a fun course to play.

Cons:

Not real well kept up. The tees are hard to find on some holes and due to overgrowth of smal trees, the baskets are hard to find as well.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course that with a bit of TLC could be an excellent course.
