Fun Open Layout in Doddridge County Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Par-3 Course Located in Doddridge County Park (18 Holes and Par 54 Total). The course laps the park and follows a picturesque creek. Fairways are well-manicured.

+ Two Sets of Tees - A long and short layout are playable to suit beginners and advanced players. Each tee has a sign that gives the hole number and distance to the pin.

+ Nice Use of Landscape:The best part of this layout is the elevation. Uphill holes are not too steep and there are plenty of chances to throw downhill as well. Although there are minimal trees they are used very well in this layout. Trees are either used to make players decide on a particular line or give players a low ceiling which proves to be a nice design feature.

+ MVP Baskets: These are highly visible with bright yellow bands. This particular model seems to catch well. There is an extra basket close to the lodge where you can practice putting from a variety of elevations.

+ Amenities: This park has plenty of activities for everyone. Aside from disc golf Doddridge County Park also has a pool, playgrounds, ball fields, tennis/basketball/volleyball courts, hiking trails, a lodge, and several restrooms.

+ Water: There are several taps on the course you can fill up your water bottle as needed.

+ Campground: I stayed at the Lone Pines Campground that overlooks #17's basket. The camp store has apparel, snacks, drinks, and some camping supplies as well as score cards and maps of the course. There are primitive spots for tent camping, RV hookups, yurts for rent, and a clean bathhouse for visitors. The camp store rents out discs for beginners as well as rafts for float trips and mountain bikes for cyclists. The North Bend Rail Trail is close to the park and provides 72 miles of mellow cycling for those that like to pedal.

+ Proximity to Other Courses: This course is within an hour of several other West Virginia gems for the course-bagger. Wood County Park, The Mountwood Monster, Seth Burton, and Orange Crush are other notable spots in this part of the state worth visiting.

Cons:

- Location: While this park is easy to find (just off of Route 50) you aren't close to any major cities. Bring in any supplies you may need for your time visiting the park as you won't find much in the way of groceries, restaurants, or lodging in this area.

- Tee Pads: Tees here are grass. They are marked by red or blue planks in the ground (to signify shorts and longs) which can be difficult to find. All the tees are level and none of them are dug-out or muddy. Even though they are flat I would imagine the tees could be slippery after some rainfall.

- Water Hazards: Know that there are some places where you can loose your discs. This is mostly true from the long tees but several holes have water that come in to play. The creek that surrounds the property is an important feature in this design. Some of the banks are steep enough you will have difficulty getting your plastic back after an errant shot. This can be avoided by taking safe shots but in order to score well you'll need to take a few risks.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this was a very fun course. While it's not the best layout in the area it's definitely worth a play. The park has plenty of activities that would be fun for the entire family.

Be sure to grab a course map before playing. The maps are easy to follow but it would be difficult to find each hole without some extra help with directions.

New developments at the park are in the works. Repelling and zip lining could be available in the next few years. There is also talk about adding a second wooded disc golf course to compliment the current layout.

Park administration seems interested in building a local base of players and hosting tournaments in the future. Be sure to jump on those opportunities as they arise because Meathouse Fork is a really fun layout in a park with plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy.
