Escaping Lockdown To Play MetroParks Farm

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 24, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The "Forest Course" is the more challenging of two courses on the property. I would describe it as a mainly wooded intermediate level course, with a few less wooded holes mixed in.

This course has all of the amenities you could ask for. There's a drinking fountain, restrooms, and a practice basket at the parking lot. Once you arrive at the first tee, there are scorecards, a beautiful map, and a lost disc return. There is also a 9-hole beginners/practice course to warm up before the round.

There are three sets of tees on most holes that provide three different ways to approach each drive. The blue tees are concrete, and are marked with high quality tee signs. Each basket has a flag on top, making them super easy to spot on a cloudy March afternoon.

Navigation is pretty straight forward, with easy to see signs guiding a few of the trickier spots.

While I'm not a huge fan of the wooded section of this course, there are some memorable holes outside of it. Ironically, my favorite holes on the "Forest Course" are the ones outside of the forest.

#2 is pretty much wide open, but the basket sits on the top of a pretty good sized mound. After this one, there is a stretch from 3-11 that is all heavily wooded.

I also enjoyed the stretch from 12 to 16. This is when the course opens up a bit, and features a fun water carry on 14. There is also a tunnel shot on 16 with more water creeping in on the right side if you aren't careful.

Cons:

While there are about 6 or so holes that I really enjoyed, the rest of the course was lacking much fun factor. Most of the heavily wooded holes are flat, and a little too tight for my taste. At times, it has the feel of a hiking trail with a basket at the end.

Obviously it's a new course, so there is a breaking in period that every young course has to go through.

With a few generous par 5's, most experienced players should score well here. Mahoning County is still lacking a course that will really challenge those with high disc golf acumen.

I don't mind a nice walk, but the parking lot is very far away from the first tee. It's pretty easy to find the tee, but it's quite the journey to get there.

Flat, wooded courses such as this one tend to hold water very easily. It was pretty much a mud pit when I played. Not a con, more of a heads up.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I had an enjoyable time here in Canfield (despite many of my putts practicing "social distancing" from the chains).

While there were a few bland stretches, the designers made great use of what they had to work with.

Great place to take the kids, or to play a peaceful solo round!
