A Whole Lotta Annies!!

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

At this point, I have played darn near every course within an hour drive of downtown Pittsburgh and was looking for somewhere to branch out and take a drive. I was honestly and pleasantly surprised by this course. First off, we're really talking about more than one course. Yes, I'm reviewing the Forest course here, but it's awesome that Canfield has a disc golf complex like this one. To have 27 holes, including a nice "learn to play" isn't to be overlooked.

I start almost all of my reviews with comments on the natural elements of a course and this one didn't disappoint me, even on a grey Autumn day. You walk into the course (more on that later) through some picturesque fields that look out over farm land horizon. The course plays through a nice, wooded forest. I saw plenty of black squirrels, which seem to be an Eastern Ohio specialty. I saw a buck and there is very clear evidence of beavers here, though I didn't see one. The whole course felt very remote, even though at times to the noise reminded me I was generally in the middle of a town.

The course has some fun shots to it. The 3rd Hole is a very cool "turtleback green" meaning a basket sitting up on a raised hump. It takes some guts because any miss requires likely the same shot back. There is a pond shot that is pretty much a putter flick, but is a cool shot that needs some touch. There are also a few memorable tunnel shots, on top of a couple of nice wooded holes that demand proper shaping of shot. The course has just about every amenity you can ask for as well. There is a set of concrete tees that play Blue. The have basic signs on the Blue tees that show White and Red distances but I found that the navigational signs were really well done. Not once did I need an app to find my way because the signs did plenty well. There are ample benches and garbage cans, as well, which helped keep this course pretty clean compared to many.

Cons:

Okay ... let's just get it out of the way since it's required when you review this course... the walk is a little long. If you play the Field Course on the way you cut into it, but still, when you finish your round it's a long haul back to your car. I have played a lot courses and this is one of the worst "car to tee" walks I can recall.

The course itself often lacks variety in shots. Much of the middle section of this course just sort of tacks back and forth in the same section of forest. None of them are very long or that interesting. They are fun wood shots, but dime a dozen. It seemed to heavily skew to forehand as well. Eventually I was actually joking as we walked up to tees and I looked for baskets that we should just look right. I think 6 or 7 holes on this course are pretty much right-side arcing fairways, meaning forehand flexes or big backhand Annys. I kept using the same drive over and over.

I'm happy any course has concrete, but would be nice to have them on White as well. In some places, either the Red or White markers aren't there, but I'm talking literally one or two and I'm splitting hairs here.

Other Thoughts:

It's a great disc golf site that has a lot to offer. It's a course that is obviously well tended and well loved and that shows in the things that matter. I like courses like this and I'll be back to this one. It's fun woods golf that doesn't require bombing discs all day. I just wish they had put more thought into variety in the shots.

Mill-er Time 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Fantastic navigation, there are signs everywhere
~Primarily wooded with a great mix of holes
~Clean course, awesome park
~Ample trash cans & benches throughout the layout
~Blue tees have concrete pads
~Excellent variety with varying distances
~Blue tees are challenging yet fair to the intermediate/advanced player

Cons:

~Red & White tees are natural
~A handful of holes need more defined gaps off the tee
~Lot's of downed trees & large limbs immediately off the fairways
~Areas of water drainage are evident, would be very sloppy after a rain

Other Thoughts:

Ventured out to Mill Creek Farm on a brisk and sunny September afternoon. The park itself is expansive, inviting and offers tons of recreational opportunities....simply a stunning public park all in all. From the parking lot you have a solid walk ahead to get to the Forest course, I can see how this could be a con, but it's a nice walk and gets the body warmed up so I have no objections here. A huge "Welcome" banner greets you at the 1st tee along with a course map and scorecard box.

The course has red, white, and blue tees with the blues being the only set that is concrete. While I played from the blues it looked like the whites are geared for the rec player while the reds provide a fairly shorter and more direct layout for the beginner to novice skill level. Nice job capturing tees that appeal to a very wide range of skills, and the placement allows for families or mixed groups to play utilizing different tees as needed.

This course is primarily wooded, set within an area of tall trees, thick in spots. It does venture out into more open holes a handful of times throughout which is a great touch. Some elevation comes into play, but not to any great extent. Fairways are manicured, and the forest floor is relatively comfortable. There are lots of trees, trunks, and limbs cast to the sides of many holes, it's not a huge distraction but would be helpful to clear up the areas immediately adjacent to the fairways. Wonderful variety with a great technical challenge. Some legitimate par 4's and 5's are also sprinkled in to mix things up even more. The navigation here it top notch. Signs everywhere to get you to the next tee with no trouble.

Overall the course exceeded my expectations, and is a wonderful place to play. The red and white tees are natural, but for the levels they cater to that's not a deal breaker. While still a relatively fresh course (1 year +) there are some smaller trees that could be removed to eliminate some of the luck factor and help reward good tee shots. I played on a dry day so the course was in prime condition, but you can tell there are areas that can hold water so I imagine many parts of this course can be sloppy after a decent rain event.

With nearby Boardman and Austintown this great addition to the area makes for a tasty destination to throw for the day!

Escaping Lockdown To Play MetroParks Farm

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 24, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The "Forest Course" is the more challenging of two courses on the property. I would describe it as a mainly wooded intermediate level course, with a few less wooded holes mixed in.

This course has all of the amenities you could ask for. There's a drinking fountain, restrooms, and a practice basket at the parking lot. Once you arrive at the first tee, there are scorecards, a beautiful map, and a lost disc return. There is also a 9-hole beginners/practice course to warm up before the round.

There are three sets of tees on most holes that provide three different ways to approach each drive. The blue tees are concrete, and are marked with high quality tee signs. Each basket has a flag on top, making them super easy to spot on a cloudy March afternoon.

Navigation is pretty straight forward, with easy to see signs guiding a few of the trickier spots.

While I'm not a huge fan of the wooded section of this course, there are some memorable holes outside of it. Ironically, my favorite holes on the "Forest Course" are the ones outside of the forest.

#2 is pretty much wide open, but the basket sits on the top of a pretty good sized mound. After this one, there is a stretch from 3-11 that is all heavily wooded.

I also enjoyed the stretch from 12 to 16. This is when the course opens up a bit, and features a fun water carry on 14. There is also a tunnel shot on 16 with more water creeping in on the right side if you aren't careful.

Cons:

While there are about 6 or so holes that I really enjoyed, the rest of the course was lacking much fun factor. Most of the heavily wooded holes are flat, and a little too tight for my taste. At times, it has the feel of a hiking trail with a basket at the end.

Obviously it's a new course, so there is a breaking in period that every young course has to go through.

With a few generous par 5's, most experienced players should score well here. Mahoning County is still lacking a course that will really challenge those with high disc golf acumen.

I don't mind a nice walk, but the parking lot is very far away from the first tee. It's pretty easy to find the tee, but it's quite the journey to get there.

Flat, wooded courses such as this one tend to hold water very easily. It was pretty much a mud pit when I played. Not a con, more of a heads up.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I had an enjoyable time here in Canfield (despite many of my putts practicing "social distancing" from the chains).

While there were a few bland stretches, the designers made great use of what they had to work with.

Great place to take the kids, or to play a peaceful solo round!
