Great wooded course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

We loved this course! 4 different layouts, 2 tee pads (colored benches) and long and short baskets. It requires a lot of shot shaping . This is all wooded golf the best type of disc golf. A lot of elevation. It is quite the hike. If you are in the area it is a must play.

Cons:

They are working on the course so signage has not been updated yet . I'm sure in time it will be fixed !

Other Thoughts:

Fantastic job on the course so happy we got to play it.

Pros:

A lot of love went into this course. Personally, I think the designers and maintainers of this course nailed it. I love the full woods experience, I love the awesome tee pads and clearly-marked signs. And I loved that as a not-so-powerful bomber, I could still conceivably achieve birdie on nearly every hole. That is key to me on a very good, non-pro course. Yet, challenging enough to pros, that it is still demanding of respect.

Cons:

The trees are mean to my frisbees.

From a Rec Player Perspective 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Checks all the boxes for a quality New England woods course:

-Quality baskets (two per hole), well mounted, occasionally with a nice touch like "hanging" or built-up. No "gimmicks", with well defined approach lines to the baskets. The ten-meter circle marked with plastic "whiskers", nice touch.

-Turf tee boxes (One per hole, except for the first hole), well-constructed, good footing, level, generally with room for safe follow-through

-Solid mix of shot shapes and great use of elevation changes. With the two baskets per hole this course has outstanding variety.

-Several true par fours forcing some risk/reward decisions.

-Good signage and way-fairing. Easy for a first-time player to get around without a map.

-Good safety, plenty of separation between fairways. For a public park, this one is pretty dedicated to disc golf and doesn't present much chance of interference from other park activity... Maybe if someone really grip locks on the first tee if there's a soccer game going on, or a very clueless hiker wonders up a fairway.

-At least before full leaf out, there are a couple of stunning vistas overlooking the Quaboag Valley.
.
-Benches on every tee, several bottle/can recycling containers throughout the course.

-Well maintained by the town and course volunteers. On the day I was playing the town was busy making improvements to the parking area.

Cons:

-Minor issue, the practice baskets are in the line of fire from the "long" tee pad on the first hole. Not a major thing, but it can make for some awkward moments when the course is busy.

-From a rec player's perfective, just a quibble with the difficulty of this place and how pars are set. The different basket placements are color-coded "Red" and "Gold" on signage and scorecards, but these do not comply with PDGA definitions for "Red" and "Gold" skill layout. See: https://www.pdga.com/documents/par-guidelines

In four cases (holes 7,10, 12, 13), the "short" red basket is tougher to par than the gold basket for a rec player, because they are par 3's instead of 4s. I understand those pars make sense for an intermediate/advanced amateur, but for a PDGA "White" or "Blue" course. This is a minor technical point, but I feel it's worth noting, and is easily corrected.

-It will be a challenging and demanding round for beginners and rec players. Not necessarily a "con" to better players. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to play for all skill levels, it's solid intermediate/advanced layout.

Other Thoughts:

-Not too many years ago the only high-quality course in the southern part of Western Massachusetts was Crane Hill. In just the past few years we have Mountainside, 501, and the two courses at the New England Disc Golf Center! Great to see the growth in the sport.

-I rated this course a solid four. For this grumpy old rec player It could easily rate 4.5 with a few new "short" tee pads on a couple of the more difficult holes and an alternate par system to meet PDGA standards.

Mountainside lacks the "over the top" amenities of a 5 rated course (I think of Maple Hill) like a pro shop (tap room?). But if you play when there's a little league baseball game going on you can visit the snack shack after your round.

My Favorite Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 1, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- DISCatcher baskets are easy to find through the trees
- Artificial turf boxed tee pads on every hole
- Signs at tee pads with fairway layout, par, and distance
- Several signs to next tee
- Mostly technical (trees in the fairways) holes but 1 & 10 give an opportunity to air out some long throws
- Lots of good elevation change
- Good use of fairways cutting across the hill in between the fairways getting up the hill and then down
- Water hazards are small enough to recover discs (Except the fenced well on fairway 4)
- Off fairway brush is fairly thin so finding errand discs is not bad (right side of 10 being an exception)
- Good use of wood chips and stone around tees, baskets, & wash areas
- Holes 2 through 18 are isolated from other park activities (No one wants to hit someone with a disc).
- A bench at every tee box
- Picnic table on hole 1
- Has an active Facebook site

Cons:

- Hole 1 drive could put other park patrons at risk during a soccer game (I have not experienced this yet & played here many times).
- Hole 15 fairway gets a bit muddy in the Spring

Other Thoughts:

- The 'not helpful' has caused me to look at this review as I like to use reviews and so here are some changes starting with a course synopsis since a map has not been provided yet.
- Practice baskets can be seen from the parking lot and overlook tee pad #1.
- #1 A good drive up over the grassy area into the wooded opening will lead to a right tilted fairway that has a ~25ft. diameter watering hole at the right edge. An 'out of bounds' (OB) access road cuts across the fairway ahead of the yellow pin putting area. The red pin is on the left side of the fairway before the access road. The fairway has a left dog leg feel but the yellow pin can be seen straight from the tee when the leaves are down. The next tee is to the right of the yellow pin.
- #2 The left half of the straight fairway slopes left down to a small stream that makes the left boundary. The elevated yellow basket is in the middle of the fairway and the red is on the right side. Go down past the yellow basket to find tee #3.
- #3 A dog leg left with the small stream crossing the fairway about midway. The yellow pin is on the left and the red pin is on the right side of the fairway. The next tee, #4, is up the hill.
- #4 Straight up to the yellow on the right side of the fairway or the red on the left side. A fenced in water filled well is way on the right just off the tee pad. The park asks to not go inside the fence. The #5 tee is up the hill from the yellow pin.
- #5 A rest from going uphill and a chance for an ACE. The yellow pin has a wooden back stop and is centered in the fairway. The red pin is on the left side. To number 6 turn back towards the tee from the yellow pin and head left up the hill.
- #6 A dog leg left to find the yellow pin on the left or the red pin on the right. Tee #7 is uphill of the red pin.
- #7 A dog leg right that goes about half the distance across the hill before turning up. The yellow pin is centered in the fairway and the red is on the right. Number 8 tee is down the access road behind the yellow pin and on the right (there are new & old direction signs).
- #8 Starts as a right dog leg then turns back left. The red pin is on the left and the yellow pin is on the right. Tee #9 is to the right of the yellow pin and has direction arrows.
- #9 A dog leg left to find the red pin on the left or the yellow pin on the right. Continue past the yellow pin to find tee #10.
- #10 A dog leg right that then turns left and ends down. The red pin is on the left side of the fairway and the yellow is to the right. There is a good view of the valley from the yellow pin when the leaves are down. #11 tee is to the left of the yellow pin (signs).
- #11 Straight down to centered yellow pin. Red pin is on the left side of the fairway. Both can be seen from the tee even with leaves. Tee 12 is to the right and downhill from the yellow pin.
- #12 Straight to the red pin on the left side then a turn to the right down to the yellow pin. The 13th tee is right and down the hill from the yellow pin.
- #13 The red pin is straight on the left side of the fairway. The yellow is up a dog leg to the right. #14 tee can be found left and uphill from the yellow pin.
- #14 The yellow pin can't be seen from the tee down the straight fairway but it is on the right. The red pin is on the left side of the fairway. To the right of the yellow pin is tee #15.
- #15 The red pin is on the right side of the straight fairway and the yellow is centered. A small stream crosses in front of the tee. #16 is to the left of the yellow pin across the access road.
- #16 A left dogleg- down to the turn and up to the pins. The yellow is centered and the red is way to the right. The 17th tee is up from the yellow pin.
- #17 The red pin is on the left and the yellow pin is on the right. The last tee is downhill from the yellow pin.
- #18 The red pin is on the right side of the fairway and the yellow can be seen straight away. Look around the yellow basket there is a serious drop off on the left side. The parking lot is to the left and downhill from the yellow pin to the access road. Right on the access road to the next path on the left down the hill (has exit signs).

- I hope you get as much enjoyment out of this course as I do. The crew making & maintaining this course have done and continue to do a wonderful job.
