The little course that shouldn't!

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice baskets.
Clear tee pads (rubber mats on crushed shells)
Great signage.
Kiosk with map visible from street.

Cons:

Parking is across the street, no way to know where to park.

Single tee bads and basket, no appropriate lay out for newer players.

No numbers on the baskets can cause confusion.

Risk of disc loss is very high. If following the 2 minute rule, I would have run out of discs. This 9 holer took longer to play than many 18 hole courses.

Design wise this course is a mess. You play a pair of holes then walk a quarter mile to play 2 more holes, then walk a quarter mile to play 2 more holes. It is like the entire course was made on a strip of land no wider than a football field. The holes themselves are poorly designed. You walk by multiple tees looking for your tee.

Hole 5 is the worst hole over 700 feet that I have ever played. (see comments in Other Thoughts) Hole 6 is not far behind.

Other Thoughts:

The course starts out deceivingly pleasant. "Why would anyone not like this course. Hole 1 is a very fair 363 foot shot to a blind basket with palmettos on each side. Hole 2 is easy to find and the difficulty increases with a 505 foot narrow shot with palmettos on each side. After the silly walk to hole 3, you have to walk back the entire length of the hole before you play it. It is a narrow 412 foot followed by another narrow 460 foot hole that feels much longer because you have to play so cautious. At this point disc loss becomes a concern. but the course is still fun but feeling redundant.
After hole 4, you have to walk passed hole 7 to get to hole 5. Hole 5 is the absolute worst long hole I have ever played. It is basically a narrow 800 foot hole with a 90 degree turn at the beginning. Off the tee on an 800 foot hole, your goal should not be to lay up 80-120 feet to be able to drive on your second shot. That alone makes it a poor design, but it also throws directly at another fairway. There is swampy water on the left as well as water behind the basket. Hole number 6 is another 800 foot hole where you can not really utilize a big arm. It is better to throw midrange lay up shots to survive the hole than to actually play and enjoy the hole.
After back to back 800 foot holes you have to take another long walk back to hole 7 for a 556 foot hole where the tee does not even line up with the fairway. This hole offers no creativity, you basically have to play every shot a particular way to succeed. There are trees that control how high you can throw, obstacles limiting your path options, and it is literally 20 feet of landing area in some places.
Walk on to hole 8, and it is a 374 foot hole where you can actually see the basket. Hole 9 is a 238 foot plinko shot which is finishes this 9 holer with mediocrity. I grew up in North Port and was so excited to see a course so close to my home, but I will never ever return to this course. This course will scare away newer players and does not give the variety experienced players needed. It does not appear the land was suited for a disc golf course, but someone squeezed it in anyway.
