A sweet little 9 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets: All in great condition, with next tee markers in the cages to help anyone who might get lost

Tees: All but one of the tees is astro turfed. (the only one that isn't is hole 3). This enabled me to trust my tee shots even on a muddy day.

Tee signs: Every hole has an individual tee sign showing the hole layout. Oddly on my visit I found that some of the maps were still in place from the 2016 "Lancashire Hotshot" event, which surprised me but I think could show how little the course is used.

Terrain: For such a small area, the course uses the available space well. At no point did any of the holes cross each other and so each hole was a unique challenge.

Cons:

Link Path: The course is set on 2 fields which are linked by a public footpath. During wet weather this can become very muddy, but due to farmers fields and a private house there is no other route to take.

Other Thoughts:

Hole descriptions:

Hole 1: A short hole to start, OB right past the line of posts, lots of over hanging trees and a protected basket.

Hole 2: When walking from basket one along the footpath you will pass a large raised tee pad on your right. This is the long tee for hole 2, so if your feeling brave start here. However for the shorter throwers continue to the short tee. From here you have a completely obstructed view due to a stumpy bush and water on both sides. The basket is set in the tree line across the field from where the tee is.

Hole 3:Tee from the ply board walk way. This is a long par 4 with a mando on the tree line. On my visit I couldn't work out which tree was meant to be the mando so played it as the first tree by the track. Your approach shot here will need to be threaded through a beech avenue.

Hole 4: A nice straight hole with an odd stile sculpture in the middle. Basket is protected by 2 pine trees

Hole 5: A short hole which threads through the trees. There doesn't seem to be a straight forward line to this basket, and doesn't seem to work as a hole. Possible redesign needed here?

Hole 6: My favourite hole on the course. The dry stone wall training area gives a nice obstacle to negotiate and something different that you don't normally see.

Hole 7: Water Hole! I really like how this hole has been set, going corner to corner on the lake. In summer I'm sure this hole will look amazing with the flowers around the edge.

Hole 8: Back down the link footpath for this one. A long tree avenue to a low ceiling green await you. From the tee this hole looks simple but the fairway thins the further you get down the hole.

Hole 9: An open tee shot into a wooded area to end. The 2 ponds left and right shouldn't come into play, however don't get caught out by the deceptively low branches on your second shot.

In conclusion a really nice 9 hole course set around an agricultural college.
