Your Friendly Neighborhood Private DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

* Wonderful neighborhood acreage with a small lake in a private HOA property. (See later in this review about being a guest or obtaining a Disc Golf Membership).

* The flow from hole to hole is mostly straight forward, as it goes clockwise around the lake and then along both sides of the parking lot to complete the last two holes.

* Nice elevation change shooting downhill on #1 (long tee), #14 and #15 "The Signature Hole".

* Roughly half of the holes are considered flat terrain with varying elevation changes on the other half.

* Lots of diversity in shots ranging from long, open bombers, technical approach shots through woods and tight windows, and adventurous overhead thumbers and tomahawks.

* Very peaceful and quiet, outside of some occasional cars along Trickum Road. Just the grand, beautiful, scenic view of the lake is worth the price of admission alone.

* You truly appreciate the beauty of the landscape and lake. Such a breath of fresh air from the typical public park or course with more foot traffic. Very scenic and pretty on a gorgeous spring or hot summer day.

Cons:

* Some of the holes play along HOA members' property boundaries. Houses are too far away to be struck by an errant disc. If you go OB onto somebody's property, just pick up your disc ASAP and take +1 stroke/meter relief from where it went out and continue.

* A few sections of the course are in low flood plain areas, especially Holes 1, 3, and 8. Big clusters of mud can linger especially for days after it has rained. It would be suggested to wearing cleats or shoes with very good traction. Several planks of wood to help with navigation through several muddy areas, as well as some steps on #3.

* Look out for poison ivy this time of the season, especially around recently cut areas. Eventually, more debris will be removed and I'm sure a round of Round-Up will be applied to get rid of a lot of the weeds and ivy.

* Several holes flirt near the edge of the lake, so unless you have a big arm and a long drive, it would be suggested to play a hyzer (RHBH) shot over the lake to fade back onto dry land. Not that this is a "con" so much as it is a caution to amateur players who cannot throw as far.

* On days when the wind is blowing, the direction can change at any given moment. Many times, the wind tends to blow away from the lake. At certain times however, you can get great tailwinds. Just look out for headwinds toward the lake as it can stall your disc and cause "splashdown".

* Since the layout goes clockwise around the lake, that means water is on your right side all the time. Favors RHBH and LHFH throwers. If you are a leftie, I would suggest FH as BH shots would naturally fade right and towards the water - or else use an understable BH shot.

Other Thoughts:

There are long and short tees for most of the holes apart from a couple. Many holes would be strong candidates for future alternate pin positions. And...

* As of July 2020, North Landing DGC is officially 18 HOLES!!! This is the 2nd time I have updated this review since its original posting. A few holes on the Back Nine have been renumbered for the final 3 additions to make 18! :) :) :)

* Some residents, including families and kids, come to this lake to walk, jog, or fish on the dock, but will rarely interfere with disc play. Remember, all pedestrians have the right of way, so please be mindful of that and respect their rights to be out there as well. Lots of geese too at this time in spring during mating season. Watch for intermittent patches of goose poop during mating season.

The neighbors are very friendly, encouraging and supportive of the disc golf community. Special thanks to NLHOA President Ed and his DG lieutenant (and main course designer) Jason Cummings for all of their hard rock and determination in making this course become a reality.

TRUST ME! It is well worth the $50 for the annual disc golf membership. That money, as well as from sponsorships, helps toward continued maintenance and materials to help make improvements and additions when needed.

If you do not know any NL disc golf members, I am sure that "President Ed" would be happy to play along for a round and give you a course tour as his guest. Contact him through the NLHOA website.

Ask Ed or Jason about becoming a hole sponsor too, which would allow you to bring an extra +1 guest (on top of current membership).
