Pros:
Centrally located in Atlanta, not crowded with other activities, well maintained and groomed park.
Cons:
Neighborhood might be a little rough. Some trash in the creek. Temporary course
Other Thoughts:
This course plays along a creek that serves as an OB hazard, with elevation changes, mature foliage on the sides of the fairways and mature trees widely spaced in the fairways. A well designed course that takes advantage of the creek and natural obstacles to provide a very challenging experience for all levels of disc golfers. Advanced and pro players will find this course more to their liking, as it takes a fairly big arm and a higher level of accuracy to play this course under par. Its such a nice area though, all ability levels will like this park, and course.
The majority of the holes here are 350 to 500 feet in length, with a couple of shorter holes in the 200 to 300 foot length, and more than a few +500 foot holes as well. Most holes have moderate elevation changes to them, a couple of blind tee shots because of this. A good mix of uphill and downhill shots. You can get away with rollers on a lot of tee shots here as there is mostly mowed grass on the fairways, but tight OB on the sides of the fairways, and mature tree hazards in the fairways may keep you from that shot. Terrain usage and basket placement is at a premium here, every hole shows signs of well thought out dimensioning, from the tee, fairway, and corridor line-up to your final destination, the basket.
The advantages to this course is the longer-than-average hole length which utilizes the terrain in every aspect. The forgiveness factor on average is also fair, not to say you wont get in trouble if you shank or pull a shot. Preferred flight paths are well established, and if you follow them, you will enjoy this course much more than if you didn't. Which can be said for any course, but this course has so many trees in the park to account for down the fairways, you don't want to end up behind one on your second, or third shot, etc...
Its hard to describe the great potential this course has, to be a standard for other disc golf courses in regards to design, and terrain usage, but if it becomes permanent then it should be a must-play for you, so you can see for yourself.
And that's the problem with the park, its not permanent. Tee pads are dirt, and the baskets are only there when the local players set them up for monthlies, no tee signs. Contact the local players to see if and when the course is set up. For now, it's the only time you will be able to experience Perkerson Park for what it could be on a permanent basis. My rating for this course would be higher than a 4, but as of right now it's a temporary course, with no tee pads or tee signs, or even baskets most of the time which I hope gets rectified someday soon.
