Time for some praise. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

If I were to solely base this course on layout, which is my MAIN factor in reviews, this course would probably be a 4.5.

This course has such excellent land in such a random part of ATL(also the first permanent course in the perimeter) it's almost hard to believe when you step out of the car.

The park is absolutely beautiful, and has relatively nice facilities.

Literally every single shot shape is tested here, quite a bit of elevation with tight fairways, some longer open shots to air out, downhill and tight, uphill shots open that turn to tight and turning to the right. Just excellent variety and an EXCELLENT addition to the Atlanta area disc golf scene.

Cons:

Ugh. This course isn't as bad as people have said when it comes to the people who frequent the park. I never once felt not safe, but unfortunately, I suppose the surrounding area is unfortunate..I played it less than a week after everything was put in permanently, and chains were missing off of 3 baskets, including one that I literally hit the metal pole on and it just bounced off..no chains there to catch it.

Other Thoughts:

I truly hope that this course can remain intact. I know they have fought incredibly hard to get this course here after a lot of years of temporary play.

This is an excellent course, and I advise to play it while it is here, I'm not saying it's going to be gone at any point in the future, but if things like this keep up, I could see it happening.

Permanent update 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Full permanent baskets are in! Temp. level carpeted tee box's are in. Temp signage all went in this weekend so it is very playable.

Cons:

Still have some holes that need tweaking #9 and #18 need some additional clearing.

Other Thoughts:

Go check it out.

worth it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Just an absolutely beautiful course, many signature holes. A true challenge as well, very tight but realistic fairways and more risk/reward than a Russian roulette game. A great variety of up and downhill holes with just enough foliage and water hazards to make things very interesting.

Cons:

Temporary...with that comes a variety of baskets. I found it very hard to putt well with the big variety of basket types. Non permanent tees were and could be very slippery when the ground is moist. No restrooms, this doesn't really bother me but my wife didn't dig it too much. Some possible car or pedestrian hazards though none presented themselves.

Other Thoughts:

A beautiful park with rolling hills, mature trees and a creek running through it. The tight fairways with multiple OB opportunities will challenge your accuracy to the limits. While a lot of the shots are tight they never felt forced or ridiculous. I really hope this becomes a permanent course because it is truly one of the best in GA.

Future Gem of a course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful, well maintained, and challenging course in a city park setting, featuring gentle rolling hills, lots of mature trees, thick foliage in some areas, and a large creek running through most of the course. The course is well designed around these elements to provide a challenging, legit par 63 layout.

There is a great variety of shots required to play this course. The course as I played it is set up for blue/advanced level players, requiring reasonable distance and accuracy to score well. True par 4s reward well placed drives and force accurate up shots in order to get the birdie. The course seems meant more for experienced players and newer players may have a tough time with this course, but a wide range of skill levels can play this course and enjoy themselves, especially if they enjoy being challenged!

Cons:

The most obvious con is that it is not a permanent course. The other cons surround that fact, such as there are no tee pads, no tee signs, and the course only uses temp baskets whenever it is set up. These cons should go away whenever the course becomes permanent. The course did seem to be in a shady area of Atlanta, but I did not have any problems while playing there for league.

Other Thoughts:

I had heard good things about this course prior to my trip and I was not let down. I was told of some changes that would need to be made for this course to become permanent, but all in all, I look forward to the day that I can make a trip and play a permanent course with good tee signs, tee pads, and baskets. I will also increase my course rating when this day comes. If you get a chance to play this course as it is in the meantime, then I would highly recommend doing so.

A must stop 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun course, laid out well along the creek with elevation changes and trees throughout. Many different types of shots are required and risk/reward decisions are important on may holes as there are plenty of chances to throw OB. Locals are extremely friendly and accomodating to vistors and out of towners.

Cons:

I would probably rate the course a 4.5 if it were permanent. With teepads, signs and permanent catchers this would be a fantastic course. It was a bit "swampy" when I was there, but I assume it was just a rainy week.

Other Thoughts:

None of the courses in the area are easy to get to with public transit. (Marta is fairly useless) If you are lucky you can get someone from the local club to help. This course is the most accessible to visitors (without a car) in the area. If you are there on a Wed. night this is a must.

perkerson park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Centrally located in Atlanta, not crowded with other activities, well maintained and groomed park.

Cons:

Neighborhood might be a little rough. Some trash in the creek. Temporary course

Other Thoughts:

This course plays along a creek that serves as an OB hazard, with elevation changes, mature foliage on the sides of the fairways and mature trees widely spaced in the fairways. A well designed course that takes advantage of the creek and natural obstacles to provide a very challenging experience for all levels of disc golfers. Advanced and pro players will find this course more to their liking, as it takes a fairly big arm and a higher level of accuracy to play this course under par. Its such a nice area though, all ability levels will like this park, and course.
The majority of the holes here are 350 to 500 feet in length, with a couple of shorter holes in the 200 to 300 foot length, and more than a few +500 foot holes as well. Most holes have moderate elevation changes to them, a couple of blind tee shots because of this. A good mix of uphill and downhill shots. You can get away with rollers on a lot of tee shots here as there is mostly mowed grass on the fairways, but tight OB on the sides of the fairways, and mature tree hazards in the fairways may keep you from that shot. Terrain usage and basket placement is at a premium here, every hole shows signs of well thought out dimensioning, from the tee, fairway, and corridor line-up to your final destination, the basket.
The advantages to this course is the longer-than-average hole length which utilizes the terrain in every aspect. The forgiveness factor on average is also fair, not to say you wont get in trouble if you shank or pull a shot. Preferred flight paths are well established, and if you follow them, you will enjoy this course much more than if you didn't. Which can be said for any course, but this course has so many trees in the park to account for down the fairways, you don't want to end up behind one on your second, or third shot, etc...
Its hard to describe the great potential this course has, to be a standard for other disc golf courses in regards to design, and terrain usage, but if it becomes permanent then it should be a must-play for you, so you can see for yourself.
And that's the problem with the park, its not permanent. Tee pads are dirt, and the baskets are only there when the local players set them up for monthlies, no tee signs. Contact the local players to see if and when the course is set up. For now, it's the only time you will be able to experience Perkerson Park for what it could be on a permanent basis. My rating for this course would be higher than a 4, but as of right now it's a temporary course, with no tee pads or tee signs, or even baskets most of the time which I hope gets rectified someday soon.

Perkerson Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 8, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perkerson Park is a beautiful city park nestled in the Sylvan Hills/Capitol View neighborhood in downtown Atlanta. Among other things, the park offers a playground, ball fields and pavilions but most importantly, it is home to what many regard as one of the best disc golf courses in Atlanta.

The park itself seems like a place that just radiates disc golf. You cannot deny that you have driven by some random piece of property and said to yourself, "There's a disc golf hole!" Well, this whole park is full of areas like that. Mature trees pepper the property as rolling hills define the landscape. Deeper in the course you will play through a more wooded area/hardwood forest. Nearly century old stacked stone walls line a creek that meanders through the park and shows itself several times as you play through. There are old stone fireplaces throughout the course that just add to its character. The course has a one of a kind atmosphere and it will certainly be memorable.

After several years of folks only being able to enjoy playing it as a temporary course, it is finally a permanent fixture. As any of the locals will tell you, it was well worth the wait. Many folks will miss some of the holes in the old temporary layout that were not included in the final design. However not many will complain about what the new design has to offer. After all, the new design incorporates something that the old design was missing, wooded holes.

From hole one's memorable tee shot shooting off a cliff all the way through hole eighteen's challenging par 5, you see a little bit of everything. Complementing the round finishing par 5 is a trio of par 4's on holes nine, twelve, and fifteen. Overall, depending on which pads you choose and the current pin placements, you will be playing somewhere between 5284' and 6867' on this par 59 layout.

You will discover that just about every design element is here! You will see plenty of elevation changes with both up and down shots scattered throughout the design. In addition, they are not just straight up and down either, most of them sweep left and right as well. Hole nine's par 4 is especially nice as it plays up and over a hill, across a shallow valley, then finishes slightly uphill again. You will find a great balance of open to tightly wooded shots as well. While the open holes allow for the big arms to "air it out", they cannot just indiscriminately throw without concern. The designs on the open holes ask for good placement for follow up shots and there are some obstacles to navigate. Once you get into the woods, you will have to be much more precise. Not many folks will accuse these holes of being unfair, but you will have to play smart. Overall, you will find that many of the park's features come into play including the creek. Almost half of the holes have a risk of OB water with some more dangerous than others. Eleven and eighteen are probably the most common OB water shots as the holes play alongside the creek. You will find unique holes throughout with greens situated on an island peninsula, a rocky hillside and even a terraced elevated basket. Overall this a well thought out and well-designed course.

As far as amenities go, this course has a lot to offer. Beginning with tee pads, they are a really nice and unique rubber surface. From what I understand, the pads poured in place from a batter of ground tires and EPMD rubber. It created a synthetic surface similar to what you may have seen on playgrounds or walking trails. They work great and appear to be holding up pretty well. All but one hole has duel locations with the shorter of the two geared to the recreational level player. 6x6 timbers border the pads and they look great. On a few, they are elevated with some nice hand laid stacked stone retaining walls. In both cases, they are unique and everyone seems to love them. The baskets are the very rugged and heavy duty Gateway Titans and they are top notch. Interestingly, they are much quieter than any basket I have ever played before. There are multiple pin locations with the majority holes boasting three placements. The tee signs are custom-made galvanized steel stands with Houck Design "Premium" signs. As a bonus, there is a second sign on the short pad as well the long pad. Volunteer installed stone steps (repurposed from an old structure in the park) on a few holes are also a welcome addition. Three bridges existed prior to the course. As luck would have it, they are in the perfect locations and work great for the course's layout. There is a nice pavilion between the parking lot and hole one that is great for tourney central or just a place to have lunch. There is also a covered area with several charcoal grills if cooking out is of interest.

Cons:

As far as course design or playability is concerned, I really do not have a whole lot of complaints. There is a time or two where weird transitions from hole to hole can trip you up. The transition from eleven to twelve and from fourteen to fifteen comes to mind. Some good next tee signs would be helpful in this area. Printing a course map your first visit will save you some time looking around.

No bathroom (or at least it is usually closed) and no drinking water at the course. There are no trashcans on the course and some say that is a con. Pack it in/pack it out. (There are trashcans at the pavilion)

Not unlike a handful of other Atlanta courses, most of the maintenance is by volunteer labor. The city takes care of the grass in the open areas but during the summer, some of the wooded areas can be overgrown. (Note that a volunteer/adopt-a-hole program has recently been implemented. I am hopeful the majority of this will not be an issue in the future).

The course, although in a neighborhood undergoing revitalization, is in an economically and culturally diverse area. It may not hurt to be cautious and observant during solo rounds, and maybe even while playing in small groups. The bigger issue is car break-ins. While comparatively rare given the number of visitors to the course, I certainly would recommend you leave valuables at home and not in the car.

Other Thoughts:

It has been fun watching and playing this course as it has transformed into what it is today. I remember when it was a temporary course set up for a weekly league and occasional tourneys. The tee pads were flag marked grass areas and the majority of the baskets were fabric. To see where it is today is just special.

To John Ritger and the others who made this course possible, thank you! Moreover, thanks to the countless others who put in the incalculable hours to make the course what it is today. This course is one of the reasons Atlanta disc golf is great. I cannot wait to see it improve even more in the years to come.
