The Hike at The Ridge

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

"The Ridge" at Pleasant Ridge Park is a beautiful track set on 80 acres of property between Girard and Fairview, PA.

You'll get to experience pretty much every acre of the park with this long (but rewarding) layout.

+ Upon arrival, you're greeted by a huge parking lot capable of hosting a good size event. There is a large, detailed course sign by the first tee. There is also a permanent restroom building that might be the cleanest park restroom I've ever seen.

+ Each hole has a nice tee sign with a QR code taped on. Scanning the QR code will take you to a flyover from the tee to the basket. Really a cool little feature.

+ The course itself is just plain fun. It starts with the very first hole, a mostly open and hilly par 4 that requires a precision upshot for a look at birdie.

+ With the exception of #13 (another fantastic hole) and #16, you'll find most of the course to be pretty heavily wooded. A few of the longer ones have carved out fairways that look more like a ball golf course than a disc golf course.

+ Taking away the extremely long walks between many holes, the design is really solid. There's a great variation of shot shaping and distance. You'll likely have to use many of the discs in your bag.

+ Navigation is almost flawless. There are tons of arrows and flags marking the way to each hole.

Cons:

- While many of the holes are worth the hike, the walks between holes are LONG. With numerous 500-1000' walks, it's a hard to get into any real rhythm during the round. While this is likely necessary to utilize the best features of the property, you can expect a solo round to last up to 2 hours. The good news is the course itself is so fun that you might not mind it as much as you would on a mediocre course.

- At the time of this review, there are no tee pads in place. The course has been open for four years, so I'm not sure if pads are in the near future. Many of the tee areas were very muddy, with a few having exposed roots and stumps.

- There are supposedly three tees on each hole, but the reds and blues are almost completely MIA.

Other Thoughts:

"The Ridge" is a course that I would expect to get mixed reviews.

On one hand, you can't deny how much fun the course is once you actually make the trek to each hole.

However, the amount of walking will be a huge drawback for some.

In my opinion, despite a couple of standout cons, this can be a 4.0 course with permanent tee pads. I hope to revisit soon!
