Pros:
I've played this course many times over the summer and it is still one of the hardest 9 pin courses I've played. What I really like about it is that you can play through it like an 18, with 18 pads that are not just shorts vs longs. One of the things that makes this course tough and a challenge is the definitive fairways. The fairways are neat and tidy, but be wary of the rough, which is definitely rough. Red Oak swallows more circular objects than a cop at dunkin' donuts.
The course is constantly maintained and under improvements, which cannot be said for a lot of courses. Steve (sportshero90) and people on the Burnsville league are out there on many a weekend adding small touches, mowing, or picking up trash. The course makes good use of elevation, and of accurate distance. Placement is needed on quite a few holes to ensure not getting a bogey.
In short, a very fun course.
-Fairway vs Rough very clear
-Obstacles require placement
-Variety of distances
-Variety of angles (from 9 to 18)
-Great use of elevation
-Good signage, including small signs that show "Next tee" if people may be confused.
Cons:
-Dirt tees. Yuck. Red Oak has gained a lot of popularity in the last year, and the tees are showing it. Can be rutted and in the rain you might as well forget any run up on drives.
-Rough. As stated above, it's a disc eater. A thick rough is nice, but sometimes it's just too thick.
Other Thoughts:
Definitely worth a stop at this 9/18 holer.
