Good Now, and Gonna Get Better

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

As of May 2023 the baskets are installed, along with the paver tees and permanent signage at the white position. Red and Blue tees are dirt, marked with small flags. The course is very playable and can be fairly rated, using the Whites. The Blues are interesting tweaks to most of the holes with add'l distance or different angles - but still works in progress. The Reds will be legitimate beginner lengths

+ The holes are generally fine, and many of them create a little elevation by positioning the tee or basket on the few rises that can be found on the property. Mostly straight holes, but there's at least one small dogleg (or tucked basket) in each direction. Hole #9 is a long alley bordered by the woods on both sides

+ The standout hole is #7, because it incorporates crossing a creek in a significant ravine from the white and blue tees. The designer(s) had great imagination to see this hole, placing the tees up on a hillside that accentuates the deep drop the the water, and then clearing a wide landing area all the way to the basket. The hole slightly favors a left-to-right flight, but the closer you want to land at the basket, the more creek and OB you have to clear

+ Beautiful wooden signage at the White position, indicating the lengths for all three tees along with an embedded map. The hole number is in white, tipping you off that you're on the White tee. The White tees are framed pavers. Not all tees and signs are finished yet. Not a negative - it's just clear that I played the course before it's public opening

Cons:

- A few of the holes use a wide walking trail as their fairways. The location seems a bit remote for much walking traffic, but if it's used regularly play will slow down quite a bit

Other Thoughts:

~ Driving from the neighborhood to the parking lot is a bit of an experience. Railroad Avenue is the dirt side right of way along the train tracks. You turn out of the neighborhood up a small dirt road and then alongside the tracks for about 0.2 mile. You might question the directions (or your sanity), but it will be OK. The parking lot is marked ("Disc Golf Parking") on the left.

~ A lot of work went into clearing holes out of the woods: #1 and #2 were probably pretty much jungle. #7 cleared a wide and long fairway across the creek

~ The layout is a figure 8, starting from the middle. Some of the baskets have arrows pointing toward the next tee, and paths are being cut through the more wooded transitions. The "crossover" at the middle of the figure 8 (for hole 4 to hole 5) is a bit confusing and would benefit from more signage

~ The course is unfinished, but plays just fine from the White tees. It will undoubtedly be better as it breaks in. The Blue and Red tees will make it playable for a wider range of skills. As of May 2023, Riverside Park Port Jervis is a solid nine, with interesting holes and a variety of challenges
