The Lost Underwater DGC of Atlantis 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice State Resort Park consisting of 18 holes playing over some big beautiful rolling hills and around the Rough River Lake of an old defunct ball golf course.

Each hole has two tees and one permanent Mach 3 basket position. Most of the short Recreational tees were concrete. Nice tee signs at most tees. Good use of the elevation and existing golf course features. Two loops of 9 holes back to parking lot.

Cons:

6 holes or 1/3 of the course (holes 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 13) were almost completely under water, so the course does flood significantly when it rains a lot. The lower laying areas were also quite muddy.

Couple tee signs were missing or damaged. Not sure if they are still improving the course with more concrete tees or if they just gave up? No benches on this long course.

The long Championship tees are natural, and a few of the short tees were natural. basket #6 had the trey bent probably a mower and basket #15 was leaning over significantly.

The short Recreational tees are not designed for recreational level players. Almost 8000' long from the short tees!

No wooded holes and lacks in course diversity except for the elevation changes which are nice and water hazards which were unplayable when I played. Highly exposed to the sun and wind elements and no seclusion from other players if there are any. I had the course to myself. Restrooms not open out of season.

Other Thoughts:

Upon arriving I though that this journey was to be an affirmation of everything that is right and true with the American Dream. Walking up to hole 1 looking a sweet downhill drive to a protected green, it felt right. Then I get to hole 2, wow big downhill par 4 with the lake in the backdrop and to the left side of the green, beautiful hole and fun and dangerous all in one. I'm thinking this might be a 4.5 rated course for me.

But then I get to hole 3 and can only find the long tee which is not in a good location with a bush kind of in the way and it's a natural grass tee and uneven. So I can't find the nice short concrete tee anywhere and I can't find the basket anywhere. Ok I'll play the long tee, but I'm looking at the tee sign and distance and then I look up and the lake in between where the basket should be and thinking hell no, I'm not throwing a 500'+ water carry to the other peninsula! I saunter around the lake without throwing a tee shot and proceed to search for the basket, but still can't find one. I come to the conclusion that the basket must be completely submerged under the water or have been removed.

So moving on to hole 4, I can't find either the short or long tee anywhere, but then I spot an odd ripple in the lake about 20' out, the very tip of the short tee sign is barely peaking out of the water, and so this confirmed my earlier suspicion of #3 basket under water. The peninsula is very muddy and I can see the basket for 4 but don't bother throwing. I also spot the tees for 6 underwater and then the tees and basket for 5 are also underwater.

I head to higher ground and find the tee for hole 7, which was a decent par 4 hole. Then hole 8's tee is back down in the lower laying area and very muddy and there is no concrete tee, but I like the basket position and cautiously throw from the mud.

Moving on to hole 9 the long tee is also muddy, but the short tee is concrete and a big uphill par 4, very scenic looking and nice hole. I panicked when I heard all the buzzing of bees on the dandelions being somewhat allergic, but thankfully they are just honey bees and not wasps. So this brings me back to the parking lot and was only able to play 5 of the front 9.

I begin to wonder what I will find on the back nine journey here in the lost underwater disc golf course of Atlantis. So hole 10 is a fun downhill bomb. Hole 11 was ok. Then hole 12 tees into the deep abyss of Rough River Lake, so I skip it and hole 13 must also be completely submerged as well. I walk around the high dry part of the course to 14's basket and I think I can see some land down by the tee, but looks muddy and decide it's not worth backtracking down there.

Onto hole 15 which only has natural tees that are heavily sloped and a broken sign and leaning basket, meh. Hole 16 was fun one, but I assumed the basket was down the aqueduct, and turned out to be wrong. The basket was still blind from the tee but plays across the aqueduct up the big hill and to a fast green, cool hole if you know where it is. Hole 17's tee points you across 18's fairway and I assumed the basket was over there not knowing, but the basket is actually way to the right in the woods, decent par 3 hole if you know where the basket is again. Hole 18 is a long flat par 4 that parallels down the telephone lines and I see a basket slightly to the left and shoot to it, but it ends up being #9, while #18 curves to the right, kind of a meh ending hole.

I wish I had gotten to play the holes by the lake, which would probably have raised my rating up to a 4, or maybe higher, but I don't know. I can only base this review on the 2/3's of the course I was able to play. At first I was amazed that I had what seemed to be an advanced civilization all to myself, but then I began thinking that the locals knew better or maybe that the course was being abandoned, or everyone had ceased to exist and time was standing still. Was this all just some weird daydream? There was no explaining the confusion I felt.

I'd only recommend playing here if you know the course isn't flooded.

I saw baskets, played it, and realized it was the wrong course! 2+ years

Pros:

Beautiful scenery
Plenty of water
Championship course with dual tees
Kentucky state resort park with cabins and other amenities
Built on a former ball golf course
Lots of elevation

Cons:

Not finished yet
Really isn't any wooded holes here
Currently no way to get to 16's basket without walking closely to another fairway
Hard to tell which basket I was supposed to throw to on 18 since it was so long and there were two baskets in that direction. It's the basket to the far right.

Other Thoughts:

I mistakenly played this course on my road trip home from Evansville, Indiana on Christmas day. I intended to play the little 9 holer at Cave Springs. Without cellphone service and no prior planning, I came across this course thinking it was the one I sought. After a few holes I thought, "Damn this is a lot longer than the reviews for Cave Springs." Once I realized there were 18 holes, I knew something wasn't right. Coming to this course unprepared for it's length, I was exhausted and thirsty afterwards.

The lake was down as there was construction going on at the dam. No chance to lose a disc in the water, but the water line could be easily made out. I look forward to playing this course again once the water level is back to normal!
