Beautiful Park Course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Two tee pads and rotating pin positions on each hole.
- Great variety of shots demanded.
- Plenty of challenge.
- Pro shop and facilities in the area.
- Short 9 hole course for warmup.
- Baskets and tee pads are in good condition.
- Mix of wooded and open golf.

Cons:

- Fee for entering the park
- Not a whole lot of parking right by the disc golf course

Other Thoughts:

Overall a very solid course! A variety of ways to play it and rotating baskets change it up each time you play. The turf tee pads are really nice! Great for a fun and challenging round as well as a nice walk in the woods!

4.1

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 31, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sandy Knoll is situated in a beautiful park that is heavily wooded. Here are the things I loved about my round there:

*Scenery - The park is truly gorgeous. Massive trees line the fairways and walking through the course is like going on a nature hike.
*Seclusion - Although the park offers several different activity options, the course is well removed from all of them. The outside world is gone when you're walking through Sandy Knoll, it's just you and the course.
*Variety - With two sets of tee-pads on each hole, you can choose your own adventure. The shorts are high-fun factor yet still challenging enough to be interesting, and the longs are epic (see below). Or you can mix and match as you go.
*Challenge - The longs here are a BEAST. Every shot from the longs is a unique line that you have to hit in order to score well. If you find yourself off the fairway, there are usually so many trees that scrambling to save a par will be very difficult.
*Amenities - This course is made better by the nearby facilities, including an awesome pro-shop, a practice basket, and even a 9-hole practice course.

Cons:

*It is really inconvenient that the $5 parking fee must be paid online through the Washington County website. The site is not good and requires a ton of information that should not be required just to pay for a parking pass.

*The course could use a few more trash cans, although the seclusion of the course might make that impractical.

Other Thoughts:

Neither a pro nor a con, but I kind of felt like I was playing on/near a beach when I was walking through Sandy Knoll. It felt a lot like some of the courses I've played in Coastal North Carolina, despite being in Wisconsin. Weird!

All in all, I would consider Sandy Knoll a destination course well worth going out of your way for.

Sandy Can't You See?

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Sandy Knoll OG is the 18-hole course on property, playing through a mix of wooded, semi-open, and open prairie style terrain. Hole variety really shines here: Two sets of tees (the longer Golds and a more manageable set of Blacks) and A, B, and C pin positions on most, if not all, holes. For review purposes, I played the front nine from the Gold Tees to the C Pin positions. After that it was Blacks to C pins. Only one set of pins are in at a time.
- Elevation throughout: it is named Sandy Knoll after all. Lots of fun topography coming into play without having any sort of major downhill or uphill bombers. What is here is used well.
- Amenities are good. Teepads are really decent turf pads, that I think I liked more than the typical concrete. Proshop, picnic area, port-a-johns and a warmup 9er across the street from the course. Good maps available, although the course flows naturally and I think we really only consulted it once or twice.

Cons:

- Prairie style roughs in places, for those that don't enjoy that sorta dealio.
- Really nothing else. There's not anything bad here holding the course back necessarily, the land available simply isn't enough to elevate this past Really Good to Excellent.
-This is really niggling, but the distances on the signs were a bit small and hard to read.

Other Thoughts:

- With 27 quality, fun, challenging holes on property, you want to make the trip to Sandy Knoll if passing through the area. It's not, in and of itself, destination worthy, but it's definitely quality road-tripping material. I'd kill to have this course locally.
- I kept getting like deja vu-y sorta vibes from this place. It's like some weird spirit amalgamation of courses I've played in MI and Wi (e.g., Birds Ruins) but truly its own thang.
- Gold Tees to C Pins are no joke and will rough you up and call you Sally.
--$5 day passes, look for the little yellow card from the proshop that shows you how to pay online, and place it on your dash.

Turf Needs to Go 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Innova Discatchers - they seem to be pretty brand new and catch as expected. The 18 hole course has yellow baskets while the short 9 hole has white.

+ Pro Shop - There is a pro shop located next to the main parking lot that has a potty next to it with a practice basket and is centrally located between the two courses starting holes.

+ Parking was a breeze. When I was there the main parking lot was full but it wasn't an issue since there seem to be multiple other parking lots close to the course that can accommodate a lot of people.

+ Very easy to get to, directions lead you right to the course and once you are in the park you can't miss it.

+ The course has a set of long and short teepads for every hole. They are very well positioned as well. They are just a shorter version of the hole but a different enough look from almost all of them. Its nice to see some of the shorter tees have a harder line to the basket to keep the challenge up.

+ Teesigns are great, they have everything you need on them. The ones that are bordered in gold are the long tees and the black ones are the short tees.

+ Each hole seemed to have 2-3 pin positions and depending on where they are located you can find yourself playing a different course every time you go here.

+ Great balance. The course seemed almost split with shots out in the open and then shots in the woods. I prefer woods golf but the open holes have their own challenge and are a lot of fun to play. You get this great contrast of needing to have power and distance for the open holes but then power and accuracy for the wooded holes. None of the open holes are too open and every wooded hole was super fair.

+ The course is called Sandy Knoll, I have to imagine that it is because its sandy out there. This makes the course drain super well and the amount of mud is minimal when wet. I was pleasantly surprised that a day after rain and it was like nothing had happened.

Cons:

- Teepads are straight up trash. Turf teepads can be passible at best but these are not that kind. The fronts of all the teepads are slightly worn down to the point where you need to be teeing off a foot or two behind the front of the tee just to be safe. They are all for the most part raised about an inch above the surrounding land and they are all not a uniform size. Some would be considered Conrad approved but I found more of them not having enough room for a run up. These to me are just typical turf that is slick and needs upkeep.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the distances on the teesigns seemed a bit longer than in real life. Im not sure if my perception is just way off but it happened a few times from both the shorts and the longs.

This course is absolutely a gem that is in serious need of concrete tees. The course itself is solid and I would be pumped if it was my home course. The amenities on site along with the playability of the course would keep me coming back time and time again if the tees were better. This course would be a 4.25 to me if there were concrete tees. Its definitely a course that if you are in the area than you should definitely think about playing. This is on the boarder of a must play to me.

Completely surprised by this local course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 21, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Multiple tee pads on almost every hole (I think every hole has a long teepad planned)
- Multiple pin placements with marker on tee sign
- Tee signs for each teepad
- Variety of shot distances and shapes
- Some shots in the wood and some in the open
- yellow plastic arrows which help with course navigation
- A few unique basket placements.
- Lots of places to sit near tee pads
- proshop on site
- plenty of trash cans

Cons:

- Course rough is not very beat in
- A short walk from the parking lots to the first tee

Other Thoughts:

I was blown away my first time playing this course. I enjoyed the variety and challenge the course presented to me and I was only playing the short tees. Also have a 9 Hole beginner course to use to warm up. Excited to come back and try the longs sometime that will certainly add more depth and perspective to this review.

I'll probably update this review to 4.5 once I get a chance to try out the longs (assuming they will be as fun as the shorts) and all the long pads are in.

The only other area I can think of for improvement is a few of the wooded fairways/greens seemed too protected. Similarly for the open holes, I think some of the trees could be trimmed/shaped a bit to make a few more "clear routes" for lower power players.

Hell Yeah, THIS is Disc Golf. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sandy Knoll is a challenging, delightful 18 hole course with lots of high-quality golf, a pro shop on site, and has got even more in the works.

1) Variety: Tons of it. All but 1 hole had 2 tees, and all but another had 3 basket locations (which rotate periodically). Great mix of open and wooded holes, and the rotating basket locations give you a good mix of L-R and R-L lines. Course skewed a bit RHFH friendly in its current configuration.

2) Quality of golf: really stellar. Every hole is challenging, and will force you to play your A game, utilize your whole bag, and execute many, if not all of the shots you have. Even the open holes are no gimmies - you need to hit a precise line just about every time you tee off. Short tees seem to play intermediate to advanced amateur, and the longs appear to be pro/Open level difficulty.

3) Baskets: big, yellow-banded DisCatchers. Love them, love how they catch.

4) Navigation: a few long walks between holes, but every basket has an arrow marker pointing you in the direction of the next tee, and indicators of next tee are on all tee signs, which BTW, are all clearly brand new, and replaced older, crummier signage.

5) Upkeep/Maintenance: clearly very good. What prairie grass was present was not too much a bear, and the underbrush in the wooded parts of the course was quite manageable. Disc loss risk isn't zero, but is pretty low on average (still: yours truly managed to lose a Zone on a blind spike hyzer)

6) Natural Beauty; holes 13 through 18: my goodness. The whole course is appealing to the eye, and I'd love to see it in fall, but this six hole stretch was simply magical. In the woods, but a high tree canopy, tough but fair lines to hit on fairways, skippy ground, and a "carpeting" of small green tree saplings off the fairways that made you feel like you were in an enchanted forest, but they were not nearly big enough to swallow up your disc. As soon as I got to 13, I said to myself: "Hell yeah, THIS is disc golf."

7) Extras: Just about everything you need. Pro shop on site (the proprietor Josh Hamm is super cool and helpful), a port a potty, practice basket, community board at the shop, benches at many holes, and solid trash can coverage (more cans on back 9 than front 9)

Cons:

Honestly, when I think about it, there really wasn't much I could knock Sandy Knoll for. Most of these are nitpicks.

1) Elevation: Not a ton. First 2 holes have some rolling hills, and there's some gentle slopes here and there, but this course did not have much going on in the way of elevation.

2) Turf Tees: This was my 1st time playing on turf tees, and I'll be honest, I didn't love them. Kind of slippery (it had rained all week prior, to be fair) and I could see them suffering damage a lot faster than concrete. Wouldn't want to play winter golf on these. Better than natural tees for sure.

3) Tee sign distances: I don't have a big arm at all, but hitting the distances these signs said the holes were made me feel like an absolute beast. Like, I put a forehand drive pin high on a listed 385' hole, flat elevation, on a single step drive with no run up? Wish I had that kind of power every day lol. Lot of these listed distances seemed gut feeling-wise to be 10-20% longer than how far they really play.

Other Thoughts:

I spent a few minutes chatting with Josh at the pro shop, and he told me there is even more in the works here (9 more holes!), which is amazing, considering how far Sandy Knoll has come in such a short time. This was a 9 holer with natural dirt tees (I believe?) just 2 years ago, and wasn't even a course 4 years ago. 27 holes here? Shut up and take my money!

It's P2P here ($5 county park entry fee), but if you'll be back with any regularity, the annual pass is a no brainer at $30. I believe the annual gets you into sister Washington County course Heritage Trails as well.

Overall, SK is a course I'm glad I took a day of PTO to go shoot, and it was worth every minute of the hr+ drive each way. I'd call this one worthy of significant travel to, even more so, once there's more golf and some of the stuff there working on is finished (2's short tee, for example). I'd love to see the pros tackle this bad boy, it's got that kind of vibe where it'll challenge the best disc golfers out there.

Solid Course, Only Getting Better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 Holes of very tough golf. This is a great course to practice your tournament play. A solid mix of wooded and open shots. Each hole will test you with multiple lines and pin locations that will have you reaching deep into your bag of tricks. The course itself generally dries out extremely fast where other courses may flood after heavy rain. Turf teepads. Innova Pro-28 DisCatchers on each hole. Pro shop on site.

Cons:

18 holes of very tough golf. Getting off the fairway can leave you in some pretty nasty rough, with a good bit of thorns sticking you. 2-3 holes still missing teepads which can get a little muddy on rainy days (these dry quick tho). Signage is not the best, combined with some blind shots, will lead to running up and checking basket location. Check with Josh Hamm at the shop for any particular basket locations.

Other Thoughts:

There are talks of editing the course beyond what it is now, including the changing of a couple holes and potentially adding another additional set of holes. Look for this to be a WI Tour stop in the coming years.

Work in Progress 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is in a mature woods, there is pretty good elevation change through half of the first 9 holes put in. The layout flows nicely, easy to navigate from hole to hole. New quality basket installed.

Cons:

I was disappointed with the number of trees that were removed when they cut the fairways. The fairways are wide and most pins are short. The long pads offer the same fairway looks as the shorts. I hope the remaining holes they put in are more difficult. These first 9 are easy to throw par for the average golfer.
