Rugged and Rocky - The Best Course in Lake Havasu City 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

These days I prefer to take course photos and let my photos tell the story. However, I noticed this course didn't have any reviews yet, so I am coming out of review retirement to provide some basic details.

I used bullet points for those that don't want to read the entire review.

Rugged Western Disc Golf

This is a rugged and rocky desert course with great views of the surroundings. I love rugged Western Disc Golf and this course fits the bill. So, if you don't like rugged Western Disc Golf, you may not enjoy this course as much as I did.

Now permanent.

Brand new targets have been installed on this once temporary 18 hole course. Follows nearly the same layout as previous course.

Elevation

18 holes of disc golf that is free. While the course has very little trees or vegetation, the designer made great use of elevation to provide more challenge. High temperatures and strong winds can add to the challenge. The course is very exposed. Bring water and sunscreen. Play early in the day to avoid high temperatures.

Two Nines:

I love it when courses bring you back to the parking lot after 9 holes. It is especially great at this park as it allows you to get more water before heading out on the Back 9.

Tees:

New permanent tees have been installed. All the main tees use pavers. Tee signs are still temporary and include all the information along with a photo of the hole and directions to the next tee. The shorter tees are clearly marked with rocks.

Navigation:

Even though the tee signs are still temporary, the course is easy to navigate. Three different color targets have been installed to make it easier to locate the proper target. Starting at Hole one, targets are arranged in order: Red, White and Black.

Cactus:

There is a fair amount of cactus on the course. Most of it is Prickly Pear that is close to the ground, but here are also some Chollas (aka Jumping Cactus). I noticed there was cactus close to the target on a few holes - beware! Regular disc golf shoes are fine, boots or hikers are not necessary. However, you may want to wear some gaiters to protect your socks and shins from stickers.

Kids, Carts and Strollers:

Super rugged terrain with cactus means you probably don't want carts and strollers with air in the tires. I wouldn't want to push a stroller or pull a cart up any of these hills.

Free:

Course is free to play and I love free things!

Facilities:

There are none. No running water, no restrooms, no trash cans, no portable restroom.

Cons:

If you are not into Rugged Western Disc Golf, here are the cons:

Rugged and rocky terrain combined with cactus makes it possible to damage discs.

Exposed rugged and rocky terrain combined with elevation gains requires some physical effort. Play early in the day to avoid peak temperatures.

Wear sunscreen and a hat as there isn't much shade anywhere on the course.

Bring your own water. There is no running water in this area of the park.

No facilities: No restrooms or portables and very exposed terrain with very little privacy. There is a restroom and running water at the nearby dog park.

Predictable: While there is some elevation changes, you are basically throwing the same shots up and down the super rocky desert terrain.

Other Thoughts:

Disc Golf is Special

This is a giant park that has lots of other recreation opportunities, including mountain biking, BMX, shooting, RC planes and rodeos. SARA stands for: Special Activities and Recreation Area. Which confirms that Disc Golf is a "special activity"!

Rating:

It is not the best disc golf course I have played, but if you are visiting Lake Havasu City, this one is worthy of your time. I am wavering between 3.0 and 3.5 so I will round up and give this course a 3.5. YMMV
