Shockingly good course in middle of nowhere

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Equipment - Baskets are all fairly new Prodigy ones. They are all level and in great condition. Signage is also really good. Full color signs that accurately depict the hole and any OB that may be present.
- Tee pads: Normally I would go over this in equipment, but the tee pads here are awesome! Large, even and aesthetically pleasing with the pavers that were used, I really like these tee pads. Hole 3 has a small deck built up for the shot across the water, and the pavers, deck, and ground are all flush at the back end for longer run-ups. Very well done.
- Length: There were several longer holes on this course, four par 4 and the rest par 3. Out of the par 3's, 6 of them are over 350' and one of those six is a whopping 444'! Definitely need to bring your power to this course if you want to score well.
- Natural Beauty: If you like the golf course aesthetic, this course is for you. With wide open fairways with perfectly cut grass, lots of small hills and valleys and large mature trees that line the fairways, this course is very pretty. There is one hole over water and one hole with a small creek at the basket.
- Dedicated disc golf area: Other people shouldn't really get in your way, except hole 3 (more on that below). The course is separate from most other activities and we didn't even see anyone else playing the whole time we were there.
- Usage of trees: Despite being a golf course, the designer did a good job of placing some holes in the trees to force more interesting lines. Hole 4 is a good example of trees dictating a specific shot.
- OB: I am not a huge fan of OB but I think it works well on this course. The cart paths are used in most cases to define a fairway and add a little challenge to the open holes.

Cons:

These are mostly nit picky as I really like this course, but I did find a few things that need updating.
- Variety: I felt that the par 4 holes were mostly the same (other than hole 4). Holes 6 and 7 back to back are my biggest gripe. Both are wide open bomber holes where the only objective is distance. No shot shaping or even landing zone that needs to be hit. Even though they are big, they felt like filler holes. I also wish they could've done a par 5 somewhere. I think they have the space for it, and it would just up the variety factor a bit more. Several of the longer par 3's felt the same too. I was constantly reaching for the same distance driver.
- No alternate baskets or positions: This course has one layout. No second baskets, tees, or even places to move the baskets to. I think this is really the biggest flaw in the course.
- Amenities: There are no bathrooms at the start of the course or really anywhere else. I also didn't see a trash can anywhere either. No benches on any of the teeing areas. For such a long course, it would be nice to sit some.
- Hole 9 tee pad: This one is a head scratcher for me. After all the super large nice tee pads, hole 9 is a faded line on an old, crumbling cart path. We almost couldn't find where to tee from. Not major, but definitely odd.
- People on Hole 3: Hole 3 is right next to a camping area and there were several families fishing or hanging out by this water feature. We had to ask one family if we could play through as there were right in the gap you need to hit. This was disappointing to me because I was looking forward to this hole and maybe throwing multiple shots. Instead I was rushed to play the shot as quick as I could to not interfere with people who were there first. The people were nice but that's not what you want to be focused on when playing disc golf.
- OB: The OB cart paths are very hard to see in some cases. I think some stakes or flags to show where the OB is from the tee would be perfect.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really good course that is just lacking in a few places. One other thing, that is tangential to the course is the other activities on site. I don't count these as pros or cons since they have nothing to do with the course. There is camping or glamping and a bar and grill on property. It is some little camping resort. Might be cool to stay a night or two and play a couple rounds of disc golf if that is your thing.
I was shocked that this course had no reviews and 1 play as I really enjoyed it. If I am in the area again, I will be back. If you are passing by on I-40, take a detour, you won't regret it.
