Really Good School Course

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Most courses on any type of school campus are just plain terrible so it's nice to finally see a good one here. The course is played with all of the concrete OB and features a stream/ditch that runs along the edge of the property that may eat your disc but are challenging anyhow.

Great mix of hole types:

You start out throwing a semi island hole with OB right and a fence OB left with your only relief being some trees guarding the left OB but they do not let disc go and are painful to touch so don't get it stuck in those as it's going to be a pain literally and figuratively to get it back. After this the course opens slightly and you get some medium distance/open holes with a few tree obstacles in the middle of the fairway and surrounding the basket. A little later on you get the short/wooded holes as ace runs if you hit the right lines. Later on the course gives you low ceiling and tight lines with a left or right finish followed by open long holes culminating in the par 4 18th. Lots of variety without multiple tees and pins is a nice touch by the designer(s) and overall felt like my entire bag was challenged and not just my putter or midrange.

Punishing bad throws:

This maybe a con depending on who you are but to me most courses are insufficient at punishing bad shots. Here most holes are open enough to recover from bad throws but also there is some water and some long bushes on a hill that take up many fairways and destroy your score. Also most of this course has a ton of OB in the form of the parking lots and sports fields. Being accurate here is a must and if not bogey, double bogey or worse will come into play even for seasoned players.

Cons:

Atrocious Navigation:

The biggest con is that navigation is quite difficult for first timers as there are no permanent tee pads yet. The best way to navigate this course is to look for the red flags/tape on the basket; they are pointed in the direction in which the next tee pad is. Usually (but not always) you will see a skinny pole that has no use and seems out of place, this is likely the next tee area. Some of them have been ripped from the bottom, looks like lawn mower needs glasses or a better pension who knows.

Sometimes unplayable:

If school is in or there is a sports event or the PE class is out you can't play the course. It plays through much of the sports fields.

Slightly rugged:

Although on school property and mostly green grass there are some spots in the middle where you're throwing on or around hills and cement. I even heard a rattle when I went for an errant throw and backed out, leaving my disc there cuz I ain't getting bit by no rattlesnake! Bugs, little shade and no bathrooms, plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is one of the best campus courses I've played and dare I say it the second best course in Idaho Falls next to Freeman Park. Once this course gets permanent tee pads and maybe a little local love my rating on this will shoot up as I see the potential for a 3.5 course here. I hate to mention other apps but I found this course from the new hotness app for disc golf and the course is much easier to navigate using it. I'm old school and don't mind hunting for tee pads, just another adventure for me but suit yourself.
