A Passable Option 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.572 Rating) A sports complex course playing around the lightly wooded edges of a park.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - I brought a first time co-worker with me, and she had no problem playing the course. The course is mostly void of heavy overgrowth areas and the chance of losing a disc is extremely low. Pars can be had by newer players and Novice players might even be able to score some birds. The par structure is extremely generous.
- NAVIGATION - Adequate. Course map by tee (1) and ok tee signs. Some of the tee signs are way off on the scale of where obstacles are. Anyways, I was still able to get around without much trouble. The course plays in a counter clock-wise loop.
- QUICK PLAY - Sadly one of the better course qualities. Figure 30 to 40 minutes for a solo first timer.
- CHAINS - DISCatchers still in great condition.
- MAINTENANCE - Adequate. The course was mowed for my appearance. There are few shots that poke threw some wooded areas and those areas were free of built-up tree debris.

Cons:

This one will not knock your socks off.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - The course is a mix of open and lightly wooded shots. Distance off the tee and technical skill requirements are mild at best. It felt like a tweener between Novice and Recreational level with a correction of the pars. I rated the course as a par 30 instead of the par 34 listed on site.
- DESIGN - There are a couple poorly executed holes. Hole (3) has no logical route without some trick-shot roller making a 90 degree arc. Hole (4's) arc is also boarder-line impossible to get close on the fly. The par structure listed on the tee signs don't make sense in a couple instances. How can one list a 290 footer as a par 3 and an open 454 footer as a par 5?
- UNIQUENESS - There was not much to work with on this site. No water features or elevation change available to use. Hole (7) is featureless and (1), (2), and (8) are run of mill shots. Most would argee that holes (3) and (4) are unique with their extreme arcs, but it's unfortunately unique in a bad way. I did like (9) with its 'S' line to finish off the round, but a parking lot and utility fence on the left take away much of the charm on the hole.
- BUGGY - The mosquitoes were horrible in early November. How is that possible? I don't take points off for things like this, but this seems like a buggy course. Bring deet.
- TEES - Natural tees that where mostly flat.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - Walking paths come into play on almost every hole. A building comes into play once and parking comes into play in fringe situations. Hole (8) has been redesigned and is not as dangerous as alluded to in a prior review.
- LOCATION - I'd be willing to bet that 90 percent of those in Atlanta don't know where this town is.

Other Thoughts:

So how does one end up Hinesville Georgia? For me it was a work trip to Brunswick Georgia and I was trying to find a beginner friendly niner on the way back to Huntsville Alabama. This was the best and only option that I found that I hadn't played, and that wasn't a school. As for the course, I think the word passable sums it up nicely. The course delivers the very basic elements of the game in a welcoming format. It should work well for most locals. No reason for those even in Savannah to come here, unless they're a course bagger.

Cons:

i was there early on a week day so there was no one around but there's lots of potential for pedestrian interference because of the path this course follows.

Other Thoughts:

It was clearly not made by people who disc golf but he what the hell, any disc golf is better than none!!

Mixed Bag 2+ years drive by

Pros:

I'll start with two cautionary notes.

1. Do not attempt to play when there is ANY activity in the fields. Even if the events themselves are not in the way, the parked cars WILL be. a football game or baseball practice will cause you to lose at least two out of nine holes.

2. Camera phone the map, or have access to the map on this site. You will need it. Even with the map, you may find yourself scatching your head looking for the next tee.

Ok, critical information out of the way, let's talk about the course. I started on two, because well, that's where I parked. Wait, back up, I parked near basket eight, walked a way in either direction and found neither eight or ninth tee. Got back in the car, loaded up the map, drove to where I thought one would be and started on two.

My first impression was a strong one. Two was fairly straightforward but it successfully avoided any of the fields/courts.

It was three where I began to think that the course might be more interesting than the typical athletic field course. It's a dogleg but you start at the foot. In other words, you have to throw a sharp right hook to start and then traverse the fairway from there. Cool.

Then four impressed me. Where the walking path isolates a section of woods, a trail was blazed through the woods, creating a quite narrow fairway. Clever.

Five is a 550-footer. And its narrow, between a fence and the woods. The field on the other side of the fence was empty, so I was free to float it over the field and then fade back over the fence to the fairway. Awesome.

Cons:

But after that, it is not pretty. Six is a u-curve around a two-story building. I can see it tempting the big arms to go over the building, which is probably a bad idea.

Seven is 500 plus again, but it's over a parking lot. You lose this hole if there are any cars. Likewise, eight is a disaster if there is any activity in the park.

Now, even the well-designed holes will leave you waiting for walkers and runners to clear the path. And five may not be playable in soccer season. But if you want to play seven and eight, be careful when you come.

After that, it is a loooong way to the ninth tee, a hole with a considerable amount of foot and road traffic in the way. Good luck. It does finish close to the start though.

I played one last, and was glad I hadn't started it. A short hole that throws straight at a building.

Other Thoughts:

Not sure how much access they had, but there is some nice woods to the side of the walking path on the later holes, that seems to be park property. Ideally, some of the fairways could be moved there.

Some good, worthy holes here are basically sabotaged by a few real duds.

It's a decent enough nine-holer if its empty but unplayable if there's an activity going on.
